2 All about FRITZ!Card 2 ALL ABOUT FRITZ!CARD With FRITZ!Card, AVM offers an integrated communications package which makes the advantages of ISDN available to you: a high transfer rate, rapid establishment of connections, optimum line quality and maximum operational reliability. FRITZ!Card consists of several different components: The AVM ISDN Controller FRITZ!Card with the associated driver software. FRITZ!Card provides the connection between the ISDN and application programs on the computer, for example FRITZ! and other CAPI applications. You have the facility to install FRITZ!Card in Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0 (Workstation i386) or Windows 3.x. For further information, please refer to the relevant sections. Windows 95 and NT Internet The FRITZ! Windows software, a compact and powerful ISDN communications program. The CD contains both the 16-bit version of FRITZ! and also the 32-bit version for Windows 95 and Windows NT. The AVM ISDN CAPI Port Driver and the AVM NDIS WAN CAPI Driver. These drivers enable the ISDN integration of operating system functions under Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. They permit utilization of Remote Access Service (RAS) and allow you to connect your computer to the server of an Internet provider by way of the TCP/IP stack and the Dial-Up Networking application of Windows 95 and NT. For further information about the conception, deployment opportunities and environment prerequisites for the AVM system drivers, please refer to Chapter 4 Onto the Internet with FRITZ!Card. 6

2 All about FRITZ!Card 2.1 What Does FRITZ!Card Require? The following requirements must be met before you can operate the AVM ISDN Controller FRITZ!Card in your computer: Your computer must have a free 8-bit or 16-bit plug-in slot because FRITZ!Card is designed as a plug-in card for computers with a PC/AT bus system. If both types of slot are available, you should insert FRITZ!Card into the 16-bit slot. Find out which protocol is provided on your ISDN line by the ISDN network operator. Connections employing the DSS1 or 1TR6 protocol are possible. Connections installed subsequent to 1994 are generally DSS1 connections (Euro- ISDN connections). An IBM or 100% compatible computer with a hard disk and a CD-ROM drive. Microsoft Windows 3.x for installation of the 16-bit version of FRITZ!. Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 (Workstation i386) for installation of the 32-bit version of FRITZ!. If you intend to use the functions CAPI SoftModem V32 for fax receiving and CAPI SoftCompression X75/V42bis (see page 8) for data compression, we recommend a computer with a Pentium processor and a minimum 16 MB of RAM. If all these requirements are met, you can install FRITZ!Card. FRITZ!Card and the software supplied with it have been developed as a single workstation solution and are intended exclusively for the connection of an individual PC to the ISDN. 7

2 All about FRITZ!Card 2.2 How Does FRITZ!Card Work? Functions of the driver software SoftCompression X75/V42bis SoftFax FRITZ!Card simply plugs into a free slot on the PC/AT bus. It is connected to the ISDN basic connection via the S 0 interface on the FRITZ!Card. This interface is connected to the ISDN connection by means of the supplied cable. The driver software associated with FRITZ!Card is loaded from the hard disk upon starting Windows. It controls the communication and data transfer processes, for example the simultaneous use of the B channels. FRITZ!Card supports Version 2.0 of the standardized interface COMMON-ISDN-API (CAPI). Programs from other manufacturers based on CAPI 2.0 can also be used with FRITZ!Card. This CAPI version also allows you to work with CAPI 1.1 applications. FRITZ!Card simultaneously processes both channels of an ISDN basic connection (2 x bits/s). Its small dimensions also make FRITZ!Card ideally suited for use in small housings. FRITZ!Card is a PC plug-in card which uses passive technology, i.e. there is no processor on the card. All computing operations are performed by the processor in the PC. The driver software with CAPI 2.0 processes the D channel protocols of the ISDN connection and makes all the requisite B channel protocols (X75, HDLC etc.) available to the applications. In addition, CAPI 2.0 offers the SoftCompression X75/V42bis, SoftModem and SoftFax performance features. The driver software for FRITZ!Card supports data compression as per V.42bis for X.75 connections in accordance with the CAPI standard. The connection times and costs can be considerably reduced when using this type of data compression on account of faster transfer rates. Data compression is activated or deactivated at the request of your ISDN application, e.g. by FRITZ!data. In addition to the digital performance features, you can utilize analog services such as Group 3 Fax (CAPI SoftFax G3) and Modem (CAPI SoftModem V32) with FRITZ!Card. 8

2 All about FRITZ!Card SoftModem The current driver software allows you to use FRITZ!Card with all CAPI-based Windows fax applications. The controller supports the sending and receiving of faxes at a rate of up to baud. It behaves like a Group 3 fax machine. FRITZ!Card additionally offers the CAPI SoftModem performance feature. On the basis of this modem emulation, it is possible to establish a connection from an ISDN connection to analog remote parties which are connected to the telephone network via a modem. Refer to the readme file for further details about the aforementioned performance features CAPI SoftCompression, CAPI SoftFax and CAPI SoftModem. 2.3 Freedom for Your Connection FRITZ!Card enables you to establish connections with various services and other parties. The basic principle for successful connections and transfer operations is: The other party must have a terminal device which is either of the same type or is compatible. The current standards are listed in the following: Internet Online services In order to dial an Internet provider using the Dial-Up Networking application of Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, you use the PPP over ISDN protocol (synchronous PPP) with the ISDN AVM CAPI Port Driver or the AVM NDIS WAN CAPI Driver. For further information, please refer to Chapter 4 Onto the Internet with FRITZ!Card. Windows 3.x users are recommended to dial in through a 16-bit client of an online service provider. Further information about settings and applications can be obtained from your service provider. In order to dial online services you require the access software for a service provider. Further information about installation and 9

2 All about FRITZ!Card configuration of the application can be obtained from your service provider. ISDN file transfer Group 3 fax Voice ISDN BBS systems For ISDN file transfer you use FRITZ!data with the IDtrans or Eurofile transfer protocols. The use of V.42bis data compression on both sides optimizes the transfer rate. For faxing to devices with the Group 3 fax standard, the fax emulation is generated in the CAPI driver. The user-friendly and practical FRITZ! module FRITZ!fax is recommended as the fax application. After installation of the AVM ISDN CAPI Port Driver, you can also carry out fax operations using the virtual modem AVM ISDN FAX (G3). Other fax applications offering CAPI 2.0 support can similarly be used. The FRITZ!vox ISDN answering machine is supplied in order to utilize the voice functions of FRITZ!Card. In addition to this, you can use telephony software from other vendors offering CAPI 2.0 support. FRITZ!com with the B channel setups for the X.75 and V.110 protocols is available to you for dialing ISDN BBS systems. Alternatively, after installation of the AVM CAPI Port Driver you can also use the modem AVM ISDN BBS (X.75) to dial ISDN BBS systems, or use terminal programs from other vendors. Analog BBS systems You can use FRITZ!com with the B channel setup Modem Analog for dialing analog BBS systems. Alternatively, after installation of the AVM CAPI Port Driver you can also use the modem AVM ISDN Analog Modem (V.32) to dial analog BBS systems, or use terminal programs from other vendors. 10

2 All about FRITZ!Card Remote Access Service, Intranet, X.31 etc. If you wish to avail yourself of the aforementioned services, you should contact the relevant service provider for information about access conditions and settings. A network terminator is equipped with two ISDN sockets. Each of these ISDN sockets is an external S 0 interface. In most cases, an ISDN PBX with analog extensions is connected to one ISDN socket of the network terminator and a digital terminal device is connected to the second ISDN socket. Existing analog terminal equipment such as telephones, cordless telephones, answering machines and Group 3 fax machines are connected to the extensions of the PBX. The connected devices are 11

2 All about FRITZ!Card addressed by way of multiple subscriber numbers (MSN). Each ISDN connection has at least three MSNs. If you have connected your PBX to one of the ISDN sockets and your PC containing FRITZ!Card to the other ISDN socket, you will require additional ISDN sockets to connect other ISDN terminal equipment such as an ISDN telephone (see gray area in the following Figure). NT S O S O S O ISDN-Telefon ISDN-Anlage mit ananlogen Nebenstellen Rechner mit FRITZ!Card Fig. 2 Analog-Telefon mit Anrufbeantworter Schnurloses Telefon Fax Typical Configuration of an ISDN Multiple Connection However, there are also PBXs which offer digital as well as analog extensions. You can connect ISDN terminal devices to these digital extensions. Digital extensions are also known as internal S 0 interfaces. They are an alternative connection facility to external S 0 interfaces. Whether you connect your FRITZ!Card to an internal or external S 0 interface - the ISDN terminal device is not the FRITZ!Card but the ISDN software on your PC, such as the FRITZ! modules FRITZ!data, FRITZ!fax and FRITZ!vox for example. All incoming calls from the ISDN are distinguished not only by their multiple subscriber number but also by their service indicator. No such differentiation takes place for calls coming in from the analog network: here telephone calls and faxes share the 12

2 All about FRITZ!Card service indicator voice. This is why it is important to specify which call is to be accepted with which MSN by which FRITZ! module or by an ISDN telephone or a PBX. Please refer to the FRITZ! manual or the FRITZ! online help for the detailed configuration instructions. Thus, if you wish to receive faxes as well as data with FRITZ!Card, you do not need to assign different multiple subscriber numbers to these two applications because FRITZ!fax is responsible for calls with the voice indicator and FRITZ!data for calls with the data indicator. FRITZ!fax and the answering machine FRITZ!vox both use the same service indicator ( voice ), however. If you use FRITZ!fax at the same time as FRITZ!vox, you must allocate different multiple subscriber numbers to the two modules in order that incoming calls can be assigned without ambiguity. 2.5 Mind you Install FRITZ!Card Correctly! You must: You should: You can: You should observe the following installation sequence for the individual FRITZ!Card components: 1. 28 4 Mit der FRITZ!Card in das Internet 4 ONTO THE INTERNET WITH FRITZ!CARD In addition to the traditional ISDN services file transfer, fax, videotext etc. based on the ISDN interface COMMON-ISDN-API (CAPI), FRITZ!Card also supports connections to the Internet. For connection to the Internet using FRITZ!Card, AVM offers you the following two system drivers for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0: AVM ISDN CAPI Port Driver AVM NDIS WAN CAPI Driver 4.1 Concept of the AVM System Drivers in the MS Windows System Windows 95 and Windows NT offer two communications models with similar functionality: ISDN CAPI Port Driver and NDIS WAN CAPI Driver. Both drivers are implemented in VxD technology as Windows system drivers and are addressed through the Dial-Up Networking application, but utilize different mechanisms and interfaces / protocols in the operating system. Basically the same transfer rates are attained in data communications with the two drivers. Both drivers can be installed in parallel on one system, if required. The AVM system drivers make it possible for you to utilize communications programs (such as FRITZ!) via the Windows Dial- Up Networking application in parallel to CAPI-based ISDN software, for example for dialing in to the Internet (see functional diagram on page 12). 28

4 Mit der FRITZ!Card in das Internet 4.2 The AVM ISDN CAPI Port Driver The AVM ISDN CAPI Port Driver allows programs with a suitable interface (VCOM/ Modem ) to also use the communications interfaces of Windows 95 for ISDN. When the ISDN CAPI Port Driver is installed, a number of virtual modems which can be accessed by suitable programs are set up in the operating system. These modems differ only by virtue of their preconfigured register settings. This means that in addition to Internet connections (modem: AVM ISDN Internet (PPP)), you can also establish connections with BBS systems (hyperterminal and modem AVM ISDN X.75) or fax machines (MS Exchange and modem AVM ISDN Fax G3). The special advantage of this idea is that the full functional diversity of CAPI continues to be supported. Thus, both special ISDN applications and also CAPI modems can work simultaneously in the send and receive directions on both B channels. A full description of the functions of the AVM ISDN CAPI Port Driver along with detailed installation instructions may be found in the file CAPIPORT.HLP in the folder WINPORT\CAPIPORT.W95 on the FRITZ!Card CD. You can define particular subscriber numbers for incoming and outgoing calls. In the case of the CAPI Port Drivers, you set these multiple subscriber numbers by means of AT commands. This setting is performed under Settings / Control Panel / Modems / Properties / Settings / Advanced. Set the subscriber number for outgoing calls by means of ATS49 = <subscriber number> and the subscriber number for incoming calls by means of ATS50 = <subscriber number>. Separate multiple entries by means of semicolons. 29

4 Mit der FRITZ!Card in das Internet 4.3 The AVM NDIS WAN CAPI Driver The AVM NDIS WAN CAPI Driver permits the ISDN integration of operating system functions in Windows 95 and Windows NT. The AVM NDIS WAN CAPI Driver permits the use of Remote Access Services (RAS) via ISDN. NDIS is the abbreviation for Network Device Interface Specification and is a standard for interfacing network cards (hardware) to network protocols (software). NDIS WAN is a Microsoft extension of this standard in respect of wide area networking (WAN). The NDIS WAN CAPI Driver for ISDN thus permits the use of the ISDN controller as a WAN card, in which case the ISDN controller is addressed via the COMMON-ISDN-API (CAPI). A full description of the functions of the AVM NDIS WAN CAPI Driver along with detailed installation instructions may be found for Windows 95 in the file NDIS_95.HLP in the folder WINPORT\ NDISWAN.W95 and for Windows NT 4.0 (Workstation i386) in the file NDIS_NT.HLP in the folder WINPORT\NDISWAN.WNT on the FRITZ!Card CD. 4.4 Requirements for Provider or Other Party For successful access to the Internet or for RAS connections, your provider or the other party (in the case of RAS connections) should have digital accesses and use the same protocol mechanisms as you. In particular, the following requirements should be met: The provider / other party must have ISDN accesses. The access should support the synchronous PPP (Point to Point Protocol) according to Standard RFC 1618 or PPP asynchronous. Registration with your provider can take place by checking your telephone number and/or by PAP/CHAP authentication. Optional allocation of a static or dynamic Internet address (IP address). 30

4 Mit der FRITZ!Card in das Internet In order to keep your telephone costs low, you are best advised to look for a provider with a local point of presence. 4.5 ISDN CAPI Port Driver or NDIS WAN CAPI Driver? The deployment opportunities for the respective driver concept are described in detail in the associated documentation (HLP files). The following recommendations for use with ISDN and Windows can be made to start with on the basis of a benefit-oriented comparison: For Internet providers offering PPP over ISDN ( synchronous PPP according to RFC 1618), both the ISDN CAPI Port Driver and the NDIS WAN CAPI Driver are suitable. You should ask your provider whether the PPP over ISDN protocol is supported. In the case of Internet providers not offering PPP over ISDN, it is normally possible to dial in via the CAPI port modem PPP asynchronous. With the ISDN CAPI Port Driver, it is also possible to support special solutions by way of register settings. You should ask your Internet provider. On account of the system design, the NDIS WAN CAPI Driver does not offer this functionality. Both drivers are suitable for access to RAS servers. Non-Internet applications such as MS Money 97 or terminal programs for example can only be used via ISDN CAPI Port Drivers (status as at April 1998). 31

5 FRITZ! Installation 5 FRITZ! INSTALLATION On the CD you will find two different versions of the FRITZ! communications software. One version, FRITZ!, is a 16-bit version for Windows 3.x. The other version, FRITZ!32, is a 32-bit version for Windows 95 and Windows NT. Both versions are based on the CAPI 2.0 application interface. The procedure for installing the two versions of FRITZ! is the same. Proceed as follows to install FRITZ! or FRITZ!32: Restart your computer. If you are using Windows 3.x, open Windows. Insert the FRITZ!Card CD in your CD drive again. The CD introduction starts automatically under Windows 95 and Windows NT. In Windows 3.x, click on the file INTRO.HLP in the root directory on the CD in order to open the CD introduction. On the first page, click on the FRITZ!Card icon. 36 6 Konfiguration der FRITZ!Card 6 SETTING THE I/O ADDRESS ON FRITZ!CARD A permanent I/O area (I/O address) and an interrupt must be assigned to FRITZ!Card in the PC in order to enable it to be managed. The I/O area is both set directly on the card and also specified in the software. The interrupt is entered only in the software. The time at which these settings are required depends on the installation procedure in the operating system in question and is described in Chapter 3 How to Install Fritz!Card. For how to enter the interrupt and the I/O area in the software and how to change this entry, see Chapter 3 How to Install Fritz!Card. Before delivery, the hardware and software of FRITZ!Card are set up in such a way that problem-free operation is to be expected. FRITZ!Card is set to the I/O area (I/O address) 300 and the interrupt 5. If these values are already being used by another plug-in card, it is necessary for you to set a new I/O area and interrupt. Owners of sound cards should note that these cards often use interrupt 5. The I/O area (I/O address) on FRITZ!Card is set by positioning a so-called jumper. Each position of the jumper corresponds to a certain I/O area (I/O address). The corresponding I/O addresses are printed on the card alongside the row of jumpers. To set a new I/O area (I/O address), proceed as follows: 1. Hold FRITZ!Card with the component side upwards and turn the FRITZ!Card connections to the right. The following illustration shows the jumper position set for the I/O area (I/O address) 300 at delivery time. 36

6 Konfiguration der FRITZ!Card Steckplatzblech I/O-Address 200 I/O-Address 240 I/O-Address 300 I/O-Address 340 gesteckter Jumper ISDN-Buchse Fig. 4 FRITZ!Card with Jumper set to I/O Address To set a new I/O area (I/O address), simply reposition the jumper. Make sure that the new value is not already being used by another plug-in card. 3. Now physically install FRITZ!Card in your computer. Follow the instructions from the relevant sections of Chapter 3 How to Install FRITZ!Card. Setting the jumper position directly on the card is thus finished. Then enter the changed I/O area (I/O address) in the driver software or continue with the installation (see relevant section in Chapter 3 How to Install FRITZ!Card ). 37
