2 Lab Overview This lab is meant to familiarize the students with the itell architecture and the use of vsphere client Learning Outcomes After the completion of this lab, students will have the ability to: Use vsphere Client for the use of the other lab exercises Equipment you will need Windows computer with a HIGH SPEED Internet connection Mozilla Firefox Important It is your responsibility to read the lab thoroughly and follow all directions to achieve the desired results. Expected Duration This lab should take approximately 30 minutes 2

3 I. INSTALL VSPHERE CLIENT All the labs are done on the local itell servers. The itell infrastructure has been divided into fourteen departments. Each department consists of two servers, a switch and a router. All the interaction with these switches, routers and servers is done through virtual machines. A virtual machine (VM) is a virtual replication of a physical machine. Each virtual machine behaves and functions like any physical computer would. Each student is assigned their own VM for the requirements of the lab. vsphere is an interface that will help students to access their VMs. 1. Open Mozilla Firefox and in the URL type 2. If you are prompted with an untrusted connection notification, expand the section I Understand the Risks by clicking on the yellow arrow next to it and click Add Exception 3. In the Add Security Exception window, click Confirm Security Exception 3

4 4. You should now see the itell s vsphere webpage. Click on Download vsphere Client 5. Download the vsphere Client setup file to your desired location and then open it to run installation. The setup will start extracting itself. 6. In the Install Wizard click Next 4

5 7. Choose I agree to the terms 8. Give any user name and organization name you want 5

6 9. Keep clicking Next and then Install 10. After installation click Finish. You will see the vsphere Client icon on your desktop. 6

7 II. USING VSPHERE CLIENT After vsphere Client is installed, you can use it to access your VMs. Every student has been assigned their own VMs in folder named after their netids. 1. Open vsphere Client by clicking the icon on the desktop. Alternatively, Click on Start Menu > All Programs, click on VMware, and then click on VMware vsphere Client. 2. Use the following to sign in: IPaddress/Name:itellv.ischool.syr.edu User name: < use your netid > Password: < use the password associated with your netid > (NOTE: If you encounter any security warning, just click Ignore) 3. This will load the ITELL vsphere Client interface. From the menu bar on top, click on View > Inventory > VMs and Templates. 7

Now expand ITELL, and then Virtual Machines by clicking the + sign next to it and you should be able to see the courses you are enrolled in name with VMs. For example, if you are in IST 656, you will see a folder called IST Expand the folder with your course name and you will see a list of different folders with different netids. You will select the folder with YOUR NETID. 8

9 6. Now in this expanded list you will see a list of different VMs that you can use. Click on the one that is needed. 7. In the top menu click on to pop out the VM console and then click to turn on the VM. 8. Once the VM is powered on, you can go to the menu bar and click View > Fit Window Now if you want to use your VM in full resolution. 9

10 9. To exit full screen mode or to free your mouse pointer from the VM press Ctrl+Alt 10. Every VM functions like a real computer. To turn the VM off, you need to turn it off like you would any regular computer. E.g.: To power off a Windows VM, you will go to Start > Shut down Upon Completion of this lab, please be sure to close all programs and properly shut down all virtual machines. 10
