3 Page 3 of Introduction PC3K Monitor is a non-commercial supporting software developed by HddSurgery team, with the approval and help of the Ace Lab company from Russia. The idea behind PC3K Monitor is to provide centralized control panel which would save time and boost the productivity while working with the PC3000 Data Extractor software. The main feature of the PC3K Monitor is to enable fast task overview and management on more than one PC3000 cards, which are located in one or more offices, using the advantages of Android and Windows platforms. This guide is intended as a short course in handling of PC3K Monitor software for the professionals in data recovery computer forensics field. It is assumed that the user is experienced in data recovery and familiar with Ace Lab s PC3000 products. Currently, PC3K Monitor can be used on desktop computers with Windows OS and smartphones with Android OS. Version for devices with ios is currently in developing process and will be available soon. 4 Page 4 of PC3K Monitor Installation PC3K Monitor software is based on a plugin server distribution model with the user application included. The Server unit collects data from the Plugin units in a request response form and present it on a PC which has the User app installed. Due to the possibility that more than one PC unit has PC3000 software and will be used for monitoring, it is necessary to perform the software installation on each PC unit which will be connected. The possible Plugin-Server correalation: 1) Server unit is the Plugin unit at the same time A Plugin-Server distribution This scenario includes one PC unit with PC3000 software which act as a server and a Plugin at the same time. This Plugin-Server bonded unit send data through the web to desktop/smartphone user application.

5 Page 5 of 35 2) A server unit is separate and there are more than one Plugin unit in LAN connection with the server A multi Plugin- one server distribution This scenario includes more than one Plugin units in LAN connection with the server. One of the Plugin units can also be on the same unit which acts as a server application.

6 Page 6 of 35 3) There are more than one server-plugins units in the system This scenario involves different combination of previous version which includes more than one Plugin units and more than one server units. Every type of mutual combination is included. A multi Plugin- multi server distribution

SysTray icon: When the Server is minimized, a tray icon is displayed. Right click on the tray icon will display the menu with options. Double left click will bring the server to normal size.

8 Page 8 of Server/Plugin installation (Windows) After downloading the PC3K Monitor application from our website, double click on the icon will start the installation (photo 2.1). Photo 2.1. After confirming the installation, next step is to choose the destination folder for the application (photo 2.2). Photo 2.2

9 Page 9 of 35 After the destination folder is chosen, next step will require selection of the application you want to install (photo 2.3). Photo 2.3 If you chose to have Plugin-Server on the same unit, mark the Server application and choose the Plugin library. Currently, there is option to choose PC3000 Express, PC3000 UDMA Express and PC3000 SAS libraries. After you mark the desired applications, in the next step you will be asked to select Start menu folder (photo 2.4)

10 Page 10 of 35 Photo 2.4 After you confirm the Start menu folder, in the next step you will be asked to review installation settings and confirm the installation (photo 2.5).

11 Page 11 of 35 Photo 2.5 After the installation is complete you will be asked if you want to launch PCK Monitor server application. ATTENTION Installation package contains the Plugin and the server application. If you want to install only Plugin application, the step are the same, just don t check the installation for the Server application. The same rule is applied if you want to install only Server application.

12 Page 12 of Remote user configuration After you run the Server application, you will be asked to add the remote users. It can be always added later by clicking on the Add button (Photo 2.6). Photo 2.6

13 Page 13 of 35 To add, edit or remove a remote user you can choose the Users from the top menu. To check the log file and setup the app, go to the Settings which contains the basic properties.

14 Page 14 of Plugin configuration When the Plugin installation is checked in step on photo 2.3, an additional step will appear. In this step you will option to choose Local or Remote server unit. If Local server is checked the IP address will be automatically shown. If Remote server is checked, you will need to enter the IP address of the remote server unit. Next field is defining the port and interval. It s not recommended to use the standard ports (80, 21, 22, 443 ) for the connection; instead, use the ports which we remain open only for this purpose (for example 9000). It is recommend to set up the refresh rate bellow one second (for example 500ms).

15 Page 15 of Adding a Script After the server and Plugin application installation is finnished, it is necessary to import the script to PC3000 software. Go to Tools > Scripts* Photo 2.6 *This example is done on PC3000 Express

17 Page 17 of 35 After the file is imported, click on the file, right click and choose Run. Photo 2.9 The script is now activated and the Plugin is connected with the Server.

18 Page 18 of 35 *I M P O R T A N T* The PC3000 software doesn t keep the script active when restarted and it is necessary to add a command line for the shortcut. In order to do this, go to the PC3000 shortcut, right click on the icon and choose the Properties. From the tab Shortcut choose the field for the Target. Add the following command line*: -Run:PC3KMon Notice that there is a space between the existing command and run. This action is needed to be applied for the all shortcuts/instances. If you want to automate the process, it s necessary to include scripts for all instances. This is done by adding the script s name into the Target field after the PC3KMon line (separated by comma). After adding all scripts, tasks from all instances will run simultaneously. * is the symbol for the space bar

19 Page 19 of Firewall During the first activation of the server, Windows Firewall is notifying about the application request command. Allow access in order to start the application. Apply the same procedure for all Firewall systems. ATTENTION If there is a issue with Firewall, please check the if there are some rules for PC3K Monitor in Firewall system.

20 Page 20 of User application (Windows) User application is the interface for presenting and controlling data which is transferred from the Plugin(s) through the Server(s). User application can be on the same PC unit where the Server/Plugin is, or it can be installed on a PC unit which is not physically connected with any Server/Plugin unit, as long as there is the internet connection between the Server and User units. 3.1 Installation Double click on the PC3KmonitorSetup.exe when you choose a PC and folder where to install User app (Photo 2.10). 23 Page 23 of Usage of the User application When you start the User application a window will appear (Photo 2.13). Photo 2.13 In order to start the monitoring it is necessary to connect the Server. Go to Tools > Profiles Photo 2.14

24 Page 24 of 35 When the Profiles windows appears, create a New connection (Photo 2.15) Photo 2.15 Choose the Server name, IP address, Port, add the User name and Password (If the Server requires authentification, the username and password it must be the same as deffined in the Server app). After you fill the data, match if the Server is online already and choose the refresh interval (in miliseconds). It is recommend to choose the value lower than 1 second. Every connection that is created will be displayed in the Profile window (Photo 2.16).

25 Page 25 of 35 Photo 2.16 It is possible to Deactivate/Remove and Edit the Profile. To active the tasks, go to the header manu, choose Tools > Start.

26 Page 26 of 35 Each task window will show the Model, Serial and Capacity of the drive. Button Power can be used to start/stop the drive (while the task is still active) and button Sleep will put the drive in sleep mode. All the tasks/jobs can be displayed at the dashboard which allows full monitoring simultaneously Option Windows from the header manu allows you to align the tasks.

27 Page 27 of User application (Android) HddSurgery provides PC3K Monitor smartphone/tablet app for Android users. Application can be downloaded from Google Play store and HddSurgery website. Before the installation ensure that you connect the server and Plugins, as well as create the username and password for the user. After the installation, a splash screen will appear and it will lasts for 2 seconds: Splash screen

28 Page 28 of 35 After the Splash screen disapear, the application will show the Main page with the empty body field. The Main page In order to see the tasks, a server is needed to be added. To proceed with this, press Setting button in the top right corner of the header. From the dropdown menu press Profiles and Add new.

29 Page 29 of 35 Add a new profile from the settings In order to add a new profile, next fields of step 1. should be filled in: Profile name add a custom server name IP address add the IP address of the server Port add the port for the server connection Refresh rate (in miliseconds) define frequency for the GET command from the server ATTENTION Naming the profile same as the actual name of the server is not obligatory. It is possible to enter subdomain instead of IP address. It s not recommended to use standard ports (80, 21, 22, 443 ) for the connection; instead, use ports which we remain open only for this purpose (for example 9000). It is recommend to set up the refresh rate bellow one second (for example 500ms).

30 Page 30 of 35 Adding a profile 1. step Adding a profile 2. Step Step 2. includes defining a username and a password. Naming the username and password same as the existing usernames and password in the server application is not obligatory. After filling the username and password mark Active if the server is currently online. Otherwise, Android application will not display the active task. Press OK and application will automaticaly enter the Main page.

32 Page 32 of 35 Header contains the logo and Settings and it s sticked to the top. Body is scrollable and contains Job fields will all PC3000 tasks which are sent from the Plugins to the server. A single job has a name which is equal to the PC3000 taks, a status whether the drive is On, Off or put in Sleep mode. Also, sector s statistic is running in a real time which allows the user to observe all the jobs simultaneously. Job s header (gray field) is also a link to the detailed description and single-page view of the sectors. Footer is sticked to the botom and shows how many tasks/jobs are in the body, how many of them are in the sleep mode, how many Plugins are sending the information to how many servers.

33 Page 33 of 35 Actions is a dropdown menu which contains: Power on (turn on the drive) Power off (turn off the drive) Sleep (put the drive into the sleep mode) Stop (stop the task)

34 Page 34 of 35 Each job can be seen in a separate window by clicking on its name in the Main manu. Job specifications - Job name, drive serial, model and capacity will be displayed, as well as the sectors.
