Chapter 1 About Content Transformation Services Products EMC Documentum CenterStage provides inline viewers that display the first page of a document with a thumbnail. Documentum Thumbnail Generator (TG) creates single-page thumbnails (100 x 100 pixels in size by default, but must be configured to 300 x 300 for display in CenterStage) for images, PDF files, and Office documents that are displayed in the inline viewers. Optionally, you can use Documentum Media Transformation Services (MTS) or Documentum Advanced Document Transformation Services (ADTS) instead of Thumbnail Generator to provide full-screen, multi-page document and image viewing capabilities in addition to thumbnails. Thumbnail Generator is operable with ADTS and MTS on the same host (versions 6.5 SP3 and 6.6 only). However, ADTS and MTS will take priority and control operations for files they can process. Note: All Content Transformation Services products on the same host must be of the same version. This chapter contains the following sections: What is Content Transformation Services?, page 12 briefly describes each of the Content Transformation Services products and the scalability of the Content Transformation Services product suite. CTS High Availability features, page 13 describes high availability features of Content Transformation Services products. Plug-ins, page 13 describes a CTS plug-in. Documentum Foundation Classes, page 14 describes the DFC and its role in Content Transformation Services products. 12 About Content Transformation Services Products What is Content Transformation Services? Content Transformation Services (CTS) is a suite of Documentum server products that perform transformations and analysis on repository content. The following Content Transformation Services products may be used with CenterStage: Thumbnail Generator (TG) Included only with the CenterStage product and installed explicitly with CenterStage Advanced Document Transformation Services (ADTS) Media Transformation Services (MTS) In addition, the following Content Transformation Services products may also be configured in your system, but are not currently supported with CenterStage: Document Transformation Services (DTS) XML Transformation Services (XTS) Audio/Video Transformation Services (AVTS) Content Transformation Services scalability Content Transformation Services (CTS) products allow for a high level of scalability. All Content Transformation Services products run under the same Windows Service on the CTS host. This means that stopping or starting the CTS service stops or starts all the Content Transformation Services products on that host. For example, if your CTS host contains Advanced Document Transformation Services and Media Transformation Services, stopping the CTS Windows Service stops both of those products. Each Content Transformation Services product can be configured for multiple repositories. If you have one installation of a product on a host, that installation can be configured against different repositories. CTS scalability also allows for several instances of Content Transformation Services products on different hosts to be configured for the same repository. This means that your installation can take either of two forms: one with identical plug-in capabilities, or one with different plug-in capabilities. The ability for each Content Transformation Services product instance to handle different plug-ins means that you can have each instance dedicated to a specific type of transformation. For example, you might have a dedicated Media Transformation Server for transforming images to JPEG images, and a dedicated Media Transformation Server for all other tasks. In this case, each instance has different plug-ins, but all instances point to the same repository. Each server accepts only those items from the processing queue that it is capable of handling. In addition, having multiple Content Transformation Services product installations will not prevent queue items from being processed in the event of a failure in one instance. To enable this functionality, Content Transformation Services has format awareness. Format awareness is the ability for a Content Transformation Services product to recognize which file formats it is capable of processing. Items that cannot be processed successfully will be removed from the queue automatically. For example, if several transformation requests are made for JPEG files, but the 12 EMC Documentum Content Transformation Services for CenterStage 1.2 Installation and Configuration Guide

About Content Transformation Services Products product does not support JPEGs, the system will remove those items from the queue. A check for unprocessed items is performed periodically. CTS High Availability features CTS provides the following high availability mechanisms to help minimize downtime and keep critical enterprise systems productive in any given environment: Failover With multiple instances of CTS, if any instance that polls the queue item is found incapable of performing the queue request, the queue item will be put back into the repository and will be polled by another capable instance eventually. The invalid queues will get deleted upon reaching expiry. Plug-in failover scheme When two or more plug-ins with similar functionality are available to undertake a specified profile transformation, CTS calls the next available plug-in in the chain, in case of failure, to complete the service request. Internal task monitor Each task is monitored internally for any unresponsive threads. When triggered, CTS automatically attempts to recover from "being stuck either by shutting down the stuck thread or, in a critical situation, by shutting down the CTS instance. The Internal task monitor can trigger a shut down where CTS then enters After crash error recovery mode. After crash error recovery After a crash, CTS starts in single threaded mode to reprocess items worked on just before the crash. The system goes into multi-threaded mode once all prior items are processed. There is also logic to remove jobs that continually cause CTS to crash. Plug-in monitor Each plug-in can be started (optionally) with its own monitor to watch for unresponsiveness. CTS monitor An external process monitoring restarts CTS in the event of a failure. Plug-ins Plug-ins are extensible. You can configure plug-in types and formats, and you can add new plug-ins to the system to support new file formats as required. For information about creating and adding new plug-ins, see the Content Transformation Services Product Development Guide, the Content Transformation Services Profile Modification Guide or contact your Documentum account or support representative. Note: Plug-ins are extensible for all Content Transformation Services products except for Thumbnail Generator. During an installation of a Content Transformation Services product, all standard plug-ins are installed. There may be prerequisite, third party applications required for some of the standard plug-ins. For more information on applications see the Installation Guide for your Content Transformation Services product. For information on specific versions supported with your product, see the Release Notes document for your Content Transformation Services product. EMC Documentum Content Transformation Services for CenterStage 1.2 Installation and Configuration Guide 13

About Content Transformation Services Products Documentum Foundation Classes The Documentum Foundation Classes (DFC) are a set of Java classes that provide access to Content Server functionality. DFC must be installed on the Content Transformation Services product host, and is included with each installer. During installation, the Content Transformation Services product installer checks for an existing DFC on the host. The following scenarios are possible: If DFC does not exist on the host, the installer installs the correct version. If an older version of DFC exists on the host, it is replaced by the version included with the installer. Refer to the relevant version of the Documentum System Upgrade and Migration Guide available on the EMC Powerlink at for more information on migration issues. Any applications that were dependent upon the older version of the DFC will have to be upgraded as well. For more information on the DFC and its effect on other applications, refer to your specific Documentum application documentation. If a version of DFC exists and it is newer than that which is included with the installer, it will be refreshed. What is Thumbnail Generator? Thumbnail Generator is a member of the Documentum Content Transformation Services suite of products that is available only with an installation of Documentum CenterStage. Thumbnail Generator creates single page thumbnails (100x100 is the default, but must be configured to 300 x 300 for display in CenterStage) for images, PDF, and Office documents. The generated thumbnails are used in various parts of the application to provide previews of content. Thumbnail Generator is integrated with Documentum Content Server to process, store, and manage files within the Documentum repository. When importing an applicable file type into the Documentum repository, the Content Server adds that request to a queue. Thumbnail Generator polls the queue intermittently, looking for register requests. The requests are analyzed and they are sent to the appropriate plug-in for processing. Thumbnail Generator generates a thumbnail of the file. The thumbnails are saved to the repository and the requests are removed from the queue. The objects are then ready for use. Users browse metadata for the objects and view thumbnails and low-resolution renditions. CenterStage can provide full document viewing capabilities after an upgrade to Advanced Document Transformation Services or Media Transformation Services. Note: Advanced Document Transformation Services (ADTS) provides a superset of Thumbnail Generator functionality. It is recommended that rather than install ADTS along with Thumbnail Generator, uninstall Thumbnail Generator and install ADTS. Note: If you deploy TG to an existing repository, TG cannot process legacy content. 14 EMC Documentum Content Transformation Services for CenterStage 1.2 Installation and Configuration Guide

About Content Transformation Services Products * Only MTS can generate storyboards for PPT and PDF files out of the box. See the Advanced Document Transformation Services Administration Guide for instructions on configuring ADTS to generate thumbnails and storyboards for any document format. ** ADTS can generate thumbnails for some image formats (i.e. jpeg, tiff, bmp, gif), but this must be configured. If only TG is configured, thumbnails for the supported images and documents will be done through TG. If TG and MTS are configured against the repository, image thumbnailing is performed by MTS, and document thumbnailing is performed by TG. If TG and ADTS are configured and if ADTS has been configured for thumbnailing, then Document thumbnailing is performed by ADTS. What is Advanced Document Transformation Services? Advanced Document Transformation Services is server software that generates copies of documents in Portable Document Format (PDF), PDF text, PostScript, and HyperText Markup Language (HTML). You can use Documentum client applications to request such a copy (called a rendition) of a document stored in a Documentum repository. The transformation capabilities of Advanced Document Transformation Services include PDF assembly, header/footer creation, security, textual watermarking, and content overlays. Advanced Document Transformation Services can also provide PDF transformations from other file formats such as image and formats. Some Documentum client applications may not provide both PDF and HTML renditions; consult the documentation for the client you are using. 21 Chapter 2 Preparation This chapter explains how to prepare for installing Advanced Document Transformation Services, Media Transformation Services, and Thumbnail Generator on a Windows host. It describes pre-installation requirements. This chapter contains the following sections: Selecting the server host, page 21 describes requirements for selecting the server host. Pre-installation steps and requirements, page 22 describes tasks that are required or are optional before installing your products. Pre-installation checklist, page 28 lists all the decision points and information that the installer requires in order to complete the installation and provides a checklist for entering this information. Selecting the server host This section provides basic guidelines for selecting the host machine for your Content Transformation Services product installation. Caution: To ensure optimal system performance, the Content Transformation Services product should not be installed on the same host as Content Server or the FAST (Full Text Index) Server. This configuration is not supported. The server name cannot exceed 15 bytes (an error message will display during installation when trying to enter a host name that is longer than 15 bytes). When selecting the Content Transformation Services product host, consider the amount of memory on the candidate server. Content Transformation Services products requires an amount of memory equal to at least twice the size of the largest file you expect to process. For example, if you expect users to work with 1 GB files, the host must have at least 2 GB of memory to ensure efficient media processing. As well, all Content Transformation Services products installed on a host use the same Windows service. This means that any actions (such as starting or stopping an application) performed on that Windows service affect all of the Content Transformation Services products using it. The number of products installed on a single host, the expected usage of those products, and the host s hardware capabilities are major factors in selecting the host. If you are planning to use the same host for more than one Content Transformation Services product, ensure that it has sufficient hardware and processing capabilities for optimal performance. For more information on CTS scalability, see Content Transformation Services scalability, page 12. EMC Documentum Content Transformation Services for CenterStage 1.2 Installation and Configuration Guide 21

Preparation Refer to the Media Transformation Services Release Notes or Advanced Document Transformation Services Release Notes for complete information on hardware and software requirements. Pre-installation steps and requirements This section explains what to do before you install a Content Transformation Services product and describes prerequisites for a successful installation. The Media Transformation Services Release Notes and Advanced Document Transformation Services Release Notes provide complete information on hardware, operating system, and software version requirements. The following steps should be followed before installing your Content Transformation Services product: Setting up a global registry, page 22 Software prerequisites, page 23 Backing up and removing old profiles, page 25 Uninstalling previous versions of Documentum transformation software, page 26 Verify the Connection Broker, page 26 Downloading installers, page 27 Installing Microsoft.NET Framework, Internet Information Services (IIS), ASP.Net, and Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ), page 27 Confirming Print Spooler service for Advanced Document Transformation Services and Thumbnail Generator, page 28 Setting up a global registry When a global registry is enabled, you can deploy service-based objects automatically from the central repository designated as the global registry, and network locations created in the global registry are available in distributed configurations. The global registry is enabled during repository configuration. There is no limit to how many repositories may be configured as global registries; however, you may need more than one global registry if you have applications that have very different user access levels. If the global registry does not have the Content Transformation Services product configured against it, then the transformation and rich_media_services DARs need to be manually run against the global registry. See Enabling a DFC installation to access a global registry, page 43 for further information. To set up a global registry: 1. Determine which repository will function as the global registry. 2. During repository configuration, you will be prompted to provide the user login name and password for the global registry user. By default, the global registry user has the user name of dm_bof_registry. 22 EMC Documentum Content Transformation Services for CenterStage 1.2 Installation and Configuration Guide

Preparation The global registry user s account is used by DFC clients to connect to the repository to access required service-based objects or network locations stored in the global registry. The global registry user has Read access to objects in the /System/Modules and /System/NetworkLocations only, and no other objects. 3. When you install DFC on client machines, provide those DFC installations with the global user login credentials. This applies to Desktop installations on end-user computers, to WDK-based clients such as Webtop on application server host, and to the DFC instance on Content Server and remote Content Server hosts. 4. Ensure that the global registry repository projects to the Connection Brokers known to the DFC instances that must access the global registry. Identifying a Connection Broker in dfc.properties, page 26 provides instructions. Software prerequisites This section describes the prerequisites for a successful Content Transformation Services product installation. Before installing Advanced Document Transformation Server, Media Transformation Server, or Thumbnail Generator you must install several applications and other components on the server host. The Media Transformation Services Release Notes and Advanced Document Transformation Services Release Notes provide complete information on hardware, operating system, and software version requirements for those products. See the CenterStage Release Notes for the versions of those products supported for this release. The following Documentum software must be installed, configured, and running properly on your network before you install your Content Transformation Services products: Documentum Content Server Documentum Composer to install DAR files Documentum Administrator Table 5, page 24 details the third party products or components that must also be installed, configured, and running properly on your Content Transformation Services product host. Note: Ensure that all applications are installed to their default location. Content Transformation Services products look to each application s default installation directory when it needs to launch an application. Make sure all installed programs have been launched and the registration dialog box no longer appears. The registration screen that appears in some newly installed programs may interfere with processing. Also, all applications must be closed prior to installing your Content Transformation Services product. Note: All third party products must be purchased and licensed by the customer with the exception of any products installed by a Content Transformation Services product installer. Backing up and removing old profiles If you have customized or added any profiles on a repository that was previously configured with a Content Transformation Services product, these profiles will be migrated automatically during installation and configuration of your chosen version of the Content Transformation Services products to use with CenterStage. However, it is strongly recommended that all profiles be backed up manually prior to installing your chosen version of the Content Transformation Services products to use with CenterStage. Export a copy of all profiles to a local disk before making any changes to your installation. It is also recommended, but not mandatory, to remove old profiles from the repository before installing this version. This ensures that only the current profiles included with your chosen version of the Content Transformation Services products to use with CenterStage are contained within the Media Server folder. To back up and remove profiles from a previous installation: 1. On the repository where your Content Transformation Services product is configured, navigate to /System/Media Server. 2. Back up any customized profiles from the previous version by exporting the contents of the Media Server folder to a local disk. 3. Delete the contents of the Media Server folder (including all versions and descendents). Viewing log file of migrated profiles During installation of Advanced Document Transformation Services, a dialog box appears informing you that a migration report will be created. You can view the migration log file generated by the profile migration tool. This log file shows the profiles that were processed, their status, and the reason why if any profiles were not migrated. The default location of the log file of migrated profiles is C:\Program Files\Documentum\CTS\migration\log. The migration log file shows the result of the migration process: migration_log_2007_292_ txt -> Migration log; The migration report log shows a complete list of all profiles before they are upgraded: migration_report_2007_292_ txt -> Report log EMC Documentum Content Transformation Services for CenterStage 1.2 Installation and Configuration Guide 25

Preparation Uninstalling previous versions of Documentum transformation software In order to work properly together, all Content Transformation Services products residing on the same host must be of the same version. Therefore, before you install Advanced Document Transformation Services, you must uninstall any previous versions of Content Transformation Services products. To uninstall version 5.3 of a Content Transformation Services product, refer to the Release Notes for the current version or the 5.3 version. Note: To uninstall Thumbnail Generator 6.5 SP1 (installed with the initial release of Documentum CenterStage Pro), go to Uninstalling Thumbnail Generator 6.5 SP1, page 53. Verify the Connection Broker Prior to installation, verify the following: If you already have a dfc.properties file, it is pointing to the correct Connection Broker. Identifying a Connection Broker in dfc.properties, page 26 provides instructions. The Connection Broker and repository services are running on your Content Server. Checking Connection Broker and repository services, page 26 provides more information on this topic. Identifying a Connection Broker in dfc.properties If you already have Documentum Foundation Classes (DFC) installed on your Advanced Document Transformation Services host, you will have a dfc.properties file. Follow this procedure to ensure that the correct Connection Broker is specified. If you are installing Advanced Document Transformation Services on a clean host, you will not have a dfc.properties prior to installation; in this case, the following procedure is not required. For more information on the Connection Broker, see the Documentum Administrator User Guide. To identify the correct Connection Broker in dfc.properties: 1. Search for the dfc.properties file on your Advanced Document Transformation Services host. The file is usually located in the Windows (C:\Documentum\config.) folder. 2. Open dfc.properties in a text editor. 3. Find the line indicating the Connection Broker. Ensure that the specified Connection Broker is the one that contacts the repository. Change it if necessary. 4. Save and close the dfc.properties file. Checking Connection Broker and repository services The Connection Broker and repository services must be running properly on the Content Server host before you install Advanced Document Transformation Services. The Content Server Administration 26 EMC Documentum Content Transformation Services for CenterStage 1.2 Installation and Configuration Guide

Preparation Guide should be referenced for information and instructions pertaining to Connection Broker and repository services. Downloading installers Before beginning the installation process, it is best to have the installer(s) ready and available on your chosen host. The EMC Powerlink site ( provides access to the EMC Software Download Center ( where a complete listing of products is available for download. The download files for Thumbnail Generator are listed under Documentum CenterStage. The download files for ADTS are listed under Documentum Advanced Document Transformation Services and the files for MTS are listed under Documentum Media Transformation Services. Download the installer to a temporary directory on your Content Transformation Services product host. Unzip any zipped files before you proceed with the installation. Installing Microsoft.NET Framework, Internet Information Services (IIS), ASP.Net, and Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Use the following procedures to install or enable Microsoft.NET Framework, Internet Information Services (IIS), ASP.Net, and Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ). Note:.NET Framework 1.1 is required on the ADTS server. In addition to 1.1, one of.net versions 2.0 or 3.0 or 3.5 with the latest hotfix, must also be installed. Note: The Adlib Web Express server component of the TG installation requires IIS to be on port 80. If IIS is on a different port, you can temporarily set IIS to port 80 before installing TG. Once TG is installed and you set IIS back to the non-80 port, you must configure Adlib to use the non-standard port. To install Microsoft.NET Framework: 1. Go to the Microsoft download site at Follow the directions for installing the version of Microsoft.NET Framework specified in the Media Transformation Services Release Notes. To enable ASP.Net on the server: 1. Select Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > IIS Manager. 2. In IIS Manager, expand the server name in the left navigation panel. 3. Double-click to open Web Service Extensions. 4. In the right panel, select the ASP.Net entry and select Allow. 5. Restart the server to implement the change.
