1 Installation Instructions TomTom (Windows PC) How to Load Coordinate Files Onto a TomTom GPS Device Using a Windows PC for TomTom models purchased in 2012 or before IMPORTANT NOTE: If your TomTom was purchased in 2013 or later, you must use TomTom s management software to load our GPS coordinate files onto your TomTom. If your TomTom device does NOT appear as an external drive in Windows Explorer (on a Windows PC), please follow our alternative set of directions. The process is easy and complete instructions are provided here. ALSO NOTE: You must have the appropriate European map installed on your device in order for these coordinates to work! (Check out our FAQs below for instructions on how to determine which maps are installed on your earlier model TomTom.) These instructions will guide you through the process of downloading our GPS coordinate file and then copying and pasting that file onto your TomTom GPS device. Although the instructions appear detailed, it is actually quite easy to load the coordinate file onto your TomTom. Just follow our step-by-step directions below.

2 CONNECT YOUR TOMTOM TO YOUR COMPUTER 1. Connect your TomTom GPS device to your computer using a USB cable. The larger end of the USB cable goes into the computer, and the smaller end plugs into your TomTom. Once the cable is connected, turn your TomTom on and wait a few seconds (and sometimes longer) for the GPS device to connect to your computer. When the TomTom asks you if you want to connect to your computer, press Yes on the TomTom s screen. If an AutoPlay dialogue box appears on your computer screen, click on Open folder to view files, which will then open Windows Explorer. If a scan or continue box like the one below appears, choose Continue without scanning. NOTE: If your TomTom does not start automatically after you connect to your computer: First, make sure you are using the USB cable that was originally supplied by TomTom for your GPS device. Some aftermarket USB cables do not support the voltage required to properly connect the TomTom to your computer. Second, after you connect the TomTom to your computer using the USB cable that was originally supplied by TomTom for your GPS device, hold down and continue holding down the On/Off button, until a screen appears, asking whether you want to connect to Computer? Tap Yes and then continue with the process outlined below. This should then bring up Windows Explorer. 2. If an AutoPlay box does not appear or if Windows Explorer does not open automatically, open Windows Explorer by following the directions below. Please note that Windows Explorer is not the same as Internet Explorer; it is the Windows file and folder manager. Click here for more information. A. There are several different ways to open Windows Explorer. The easiest way is to hold down the Windows logo key and press E. 3 logo key is located a bit to the left of the space bar, and on desktops using a full-size keyboard the Windows key is located on each side of the space bar. It has flag on it that resembles the Windows logo: B. You can also open Windows Explorer by (i) right-clicking Start and then selecting Explore or Open Windows Explorer, or (ii) clicking on Start, then Programs, then the Accessories sub-menu. Once you have opened Windows Explorer, under My Computer or Computer, you will see the computer s drives for example, the C drive (the main drive of your computer). If nothing is listed under Computer, simply click on the small triangle immediately to its left, to expand its contents: Copyright Wanaka Enterprises, Inc Page 3 of 14

4 Note that your TomTom device will be listed under My Computer or Computer as one of the drives. You have connected the TomTom to your computer and are now ready to download the GPS coordinate file and load it onto the TomTom. DOWNLOAD, SAVE AND EXTRACT THE GPS COORDINATE FILE 4. Locate the activation code in your ebook (easily found by searching in the ebook for the word activation ). 5. Go to This will take you to the page GPS Downloads for Adventures by Car ebooks. 6. Click on the link for your ebook (Tuscany or Ireland), and you will be taken to the downloads page. Select Download TomTom GPS Coordinates and you will be taken to the License Agreement for the GPS coordinate file. If you agree to the terms of the License Agreement, check the box, I agree to the terms of the License Agreement and then enter the complete code in the Activation Code dialogue box (using the hyphen). 7. Now click Activate Download. Depending on your internet browser, the download process should begin automatically. If you are asked What do you want to do with the file? select Save as and then save the file to your desktop. Copyright Wanaka Enterprises, Inc Page 4 of 14

5 Once the folder has downloaded (which should only take a few moments), navigate to the download location. If you are using Microsoft s Internet Explorer as your web browser, you will be given a choice between Open and Open Folder. Click on Open Folder: Copyright Wanaka Enterprises, Inc Page 5 of 14

6 8. The file will have downloaded as a compressed (zipped) folder. Locate the downloaded folder and extract the GPS coordinate file from the folder by right-clicking on the folder and then clicking Extract All. In the dialogue box that follows, ensure that the box Show extracted files when complete is checked and then select Extract. Click here if you need further assistance extracting the files. 7 COPY AND PASTE THE GPS COORDINATE FILE ONTO YOUR TOMTOM 9. You will now see a screen as follows: 10. Select both files (an OV2 file and a BMP file) by holding the Control key (CTRL) while selecting each, then right-click with your mouse and select Copy. If you see a folder called _MACOSX, disregard it. That folder is used only when installing the coordinates onto a Mac and is not necessary for Windows users. 8 11. While still in Windows Explorer, left-click once on your TomTom. That will make a list of the folders and files that reside in your GPS device appear in the right navigation pane of Windows Explorer: 12. Scroll down through this list of folders, without clicking on any of them, until you find the folder labeled Western_and_Central_Europe (or similar). If you only have the map of Ireland installed on your GPS, the folder will be named United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland. ). This is the folder where the GPS coordinate file needs to be pasted. 9 13. Left-click once on that folder (usually, Western_and_Central_Europe ), then right-click on your mouse and select Paste. Copyright Wanaka Enterprises, Inc Page 9 of 14

10 This copies the GPS coordinate file onto your TomTom. 14. Now left-click again on your TomTom, right-click on your mouse and select Eject from the drop-down menu. It is now safe to remove the TomTom from your computer. To view the set of GPS coordinates on your TomTom, turn the device on. 12 The Depart from screen will appear. Tap on Point of Interest A Point of Interest screen will now appear. Tap on the sunflower icon for the GPS coordinates you just loaded onto your TomTom (the name of the file may vary depending on which ebook you have purchased) Copyright Wanaka Enterprises, Inc Page 12 of 14

13 NOTE: Depending on the model of your TomTom, you may have to navigate to POI category on the TomTom to view the list of GPS coordinates you just downloaded. The POI category screen on your TomTom is typically accessed by tapping Drive to, then Point of Interest. In the screen that appears next, tap on POI near Home and a Drive to screen will appear that looks almost identical to the screenshot above. Tap on the sunflower icon to access the GPS coordinates you just loaded onto your TomTom, which will be shown on the next screen in an alphabetical list called POI or POI categories, as shown below. This takes you to the point of interest nearest your current location in the GPS coordinate file you just downloaded (Pienza, Italy in this example) All of the GPS coordinates are now loaded onto your TomTom as Points of Interest and are ready to go when you arrive in Italy or Ireland. There is no need to reload any of the coordinates after you arrive. We recommend that you load our coordinates onto your TomTom device before you leave on your trip. Then, after arriving in Italy or Ireland, turn on the GPS device after picking up your rental car, let it spool up (it takes a few minutes for the device to locate and lock onto satellites in a different continent), select your destination from the list of Points of Interest and away you go! The combination of one of our ebooks, accompanied by a set of GPS coordinates loaded onto your TomTom GPS device, will enable you to find the best places in Tuscany or Ireland and drive to them with ease. 14 FAQs Which maps are installed on my device? You must have the appropriate European map installed on your device in order for our coordinates to work. There are two methods of determining which maps are installed on your older (2012 or earlier) TomTom device: 1. Check the list of the folders and files that reside in your GPS device using Windows Explorer, as described on page 8 above. 2. You can also verify which maps are loaded on your particular TomTom device using TomTom Home if installed on your computer. (If TomTom Home is not installed on your computer, first go here to verify that that is the correct application for your particular device and then download the application from this website.) Assuming TomTom Home is installed on your computer, Connect your TomTom device to your computer using a USB cable Open TomTom Home Go to Manage my device Select the first tab, Items on device Select Maps This will display all of the maps installed on your particular device.
