4 Windows XP-style tool icons 7 XP Style Icons that are 24-bit color. Icons can be resized to 16, 24, or 32 pixels square. Adjustments found in preference dialog under look and feel category. Transparency & Priority Attributes 8 Transparency is a display attribute that allows the setting of an elements transparency from 0% (no transparency) to an almost invisible setting of 100%. Transparency can be applied to most items in MicroStation XM Priority is a display attribute for 2D files only that adds a calculated depth to elements. This allows you to have a display order so that various elements display in front (highest values) of or behind (lowest values) other elements.

5 Transparent dialog boxes 9 Dockable dialog boxes 10 The following dialog boxes can be docked: Tool Settings window Element Info dialog box Level Display dialog box Feature Manager window (feature modeling) These dialog boxes can be docked as tabs, or as a horizontal or vertical panel next to another docked dialog box. The tabs shown in the docking region can be torn off to become floating dialog boxes. Dialog boxes can also be resized when docked

6 Improved Docking 11 Input focus model 12 A managed focus model is implemented for the MicroStation V8 XM Edition. The model is hierarchical with the top level called home. In this model MicroStation follows your actions and attempts to move input focus for common operations. For example, when you place a line the focus moves from home to the AccuDraw window, then back to home. When the focus is home, positional keyboard navigation can be used. To move the focus home Press <Esc>. Home When the focus is home, you do not need to use the mouse in order to navigate tool boxes, tasks, and the tool settings window. You can quickly select tools by pressing keys on your keyboard. This technique is called positional keyboard navigation Tool Settings the Tool Settings window has the focus AccuDraw the AccuDraw window has the focus Key-in the Key-in window has the focus (No icon) another window or dialog box other than those listed above has the focus

7 Positional keyboard navigation 13 Positional Keyboard Navigation allows you to select tools and tool settings without needing to move the mouse Positional keyboard navigation is used to map the keyboard to collections of interface items. This technique lets you use the keyboard to select tools, opendialog boxes, and change settings. To enable positional keyboard navigation, turn on the preference Use Position Mapping in the Position Mapping category of the Preferences dialog box (WorkspacePreferences>Position Mapping). This preference is on by default. Task-Based User Interface 14

8 Positional Keyboard Navigation 15 With positional keyboard navigation enabled, when the input focus is home, the following keys are enabled: <Enter> opens the Key-in window at the pointer location or if the window is already open, puts focus within the key-in browser if it is visible. <spacebar> moves focus to the AccuDraw window. <Tab> change to the next element under the pointer. <PgUp> next task <PgDn> previous task To enable the display of keyboard key labels as navigational aids on tool icons accessible via positional keyboard navigation, turn on the preference Show Position Mapping Aids. This preference is on by default. Button Assignments Button Assignments have been expanded. Double clicking the middle mouse button will perform a Fit View. Holding down the middle mouse button and moving the mouse will Pan the view. Rolling the mouse wheel will Zoom in and out of a view. Pressing the right mouse button will bring up a Contextual shortcut Menu Note that if the middle mouse button is changed to tentative, double clicking the middle button will not perform a Fit View. Contextual menus can be accessed by a single right click or a press and hold on the right mouse button, depending on which preference has been selected. 16

9 Shortcut Menus 17 Right-clicking an element with the Element Selection tool pointer opens a shortcut menu that provides convenient, contextual access to tools for manipulating that element: Copy Element Move Element Scale Rotate Mirror Delete Element On the same shortcut menu is Properties, which provides access to information about the right-clicked element. Fence Enhancements 18 Multiple, Named Fences allow the user to place a fence and save it for future recall. This also allows the user to place multiple fences on screen at one time. The Manipulate Fence Contents tool now includes an option to Array fence contents.

11 Licensing 21 MicroStation XM no longer uses a heart beat to communicate with a SELECTServer. Usage is uploaded to your license server once a day. If no license server is found, MicroStation will function for up to 30 days before a connection needs to be established. Once a connection has been established, and usage has been reported, the 30 day clock resets. New File Format? NO When the V8 file format was created, it was designed for future expansion and enhancement. All features added to MicroStation XM are compatible with the MicroStation 2004 Edition. Understand this does not mean you will be able to take advantage of XM s enhancements in the 2004 Edition. The MicroStation XM directory structure now conforms to Microsoft Windows standards. Document files are now located under: "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Bentley" Program files are located under: "C:\Program Files\Bentley". 22

13 V8i Interface 25 For V8i: Task Window with Tasks Tab Includes embedded Main tool box. Can still open the Main tool box and just dock it as you like. Layout Modes for the display of tasks. Drawing is still found as the default under Tasks. Now on left side instead of right. Shown here is the Panel layout mode. For XM: Main tool box usually docked on the left side. 14 Task Group Selection 27 Even when other tasks are selected, the Main tool box remains shown embedded at the top of the listings as illustrated on the right Some Additional Improvements 28 Snaps terminology of from has been replaced with point so it is now Tangent Point and Perpendicular Point. This doesn t change the way the snap behaves. Tools pull-down menu now gives you access to all the tool boxes. Activate Reference allows you to activate a reference file so that you can edit it while in Reference Manager (not necessarily recommended but may be single most useful feature). Jump To Active Level a new option in the pop-up menu of Level Display and Level Manager takes away the hassle of going through a long list of levels to get to the Active level. This instead jumps you in the list to the level that is active. This is useful if your file has numerous levels. Print Attributes now has the Points option to toggle on/off the printing of Points.

15 Match Element Attributes 29 There is now a Match Element Attributes tool (it looks like an eye-dropper) in the Change Attributes dialog box. This allows you to use an existing element to control the settings found in the dialog box. If Use Active Attributes is checked ON then those too will be set to match what is selected. Crossing Selection 30 XM had the crossing option only if you toggled it on by clicking the button until a vertical line showed up. V8i doesn t change to crossing option, instead the direction determines if including crossing or not. Now you can select elements crossing the boundary by going from right to left rather than having to clicking on a tool in the element selection. When using the manipulation tools this can be very handing because if you just want a rectangular block crossing window selection you can do so automatically without even having to go into element selection.

Geo-Coordination Overview 34 MicroStation allows the user to position a design on the earth s surface Takes into account the curvature of the earth with little or no user input MicroStation can use a Cartesian coordinate system such as State Plane Information from multiple sources can be spatially located using a common coordinate system The re-projection can be done on-the-fly when referencing data

18 Coordinate Systems & Re-Projecting Data 35 MicroStation V8i can assign geo-graphic coordinate systems in several ways From a library From placemarks From attached references From a file MicroStation can reproject data from one GCS to another. When active data is reprojected it is saved to the file (permanent). When reference attachments are projected it will NOT write to the file (temporary). Google Earth Tools XM/V8i MicroStation is able to produce KML files to be utilized in Google Earth. Placement by placemarks. Placement by GCS. Viewing data in Google Earth.
