4 1 Overview The Relativity Desktp Client (RDC) prvides the functinality fr imprting dcument lad, image, and prductin files, as well as fr exprting prductin sets, saved searches, and flders. Yu can als use this utility t imprt and exprt custm applicatins and bject data. Using the RDC As a litigatin supprt specialist, yu need t exprt a prductin f files fr the ppsing cunsel in the Salt vs. Pepper case. Yu created a prductin set named "Salt vs. Pepper - Prductin" and ran yur prductin, and nw yu need t exprt the prductin using the RDC. S, yu pen the RelativityDesktp Client and lg in t yur Relativity envirnment. Yu select and pen the Salt vs. Pepper case and then click Prductin Set... n the Exprt menu t pen the prductin exprt ptins. Since this prductin set cnsists nly f messages, yu include yur Bates numbering and metadata fields in the exprted metadata. Relativity Desktp Client Guide - 4

5 The case prductin frmat requirements yu need t cmply with include PDF images with an Opticn data file frmat and a.csv data file frmat with Unicde (UTF-8) encding. 6 After selecting yur ptins, yu're ready t click Run n the File menu t cmplete the prductin exprt t be able t send the Salt vs. Pepper s as PDF images with the required data files t the ppsing cunsel. 1.1 RDC menu bar The RDC menu bar appears abve the wrkspace flder structure. It includes the fllwing menu ptins: File: Open - switches between different wrkspaces. Exit - clses the RDC. Refresh - updates the flder brwser. Tls - Imprt: Image File - imprts images frm a page-level lad file. Dcument Lad File - imprts native files, dcument metadata, and extracted text frm a dcumentlevel lad file. Prductin Lad File - imprts prductins frm a page-level lad file. Tls - Exprt: Prductin Set - exprts prductin sets. Saved Search - exprts frm saved searches. Relativity Desktp Client Guide - 6

7 Flder - exprts frm a specific flders. Flder and Subflders - exprts frm a specific flder and its subflders. Optins: Help: Settings - changes the default value fr Frce Flder Preview and enter a WebService URL. Check Cnnectivity - assists with trubleshting netwrk and system cnfiguratin errrs that ccurred while imprting and exprting. Abut - displays the versin f the RDC. 1.2 Wrkspace flder ptins The RDC prvides right-click ptins n flders, which yu can use t build the wrkspace flder structure, r t imprt and/r exprt directly t and frm a flder. When yu right-click n a wrkspace r flder, the fllwing menu ptins display: New Flder - create subflders. In the Add New Flder pp-up, enter a flder name, and then click OK. The maximum length fr the flder name is 255 characters. Since the flder name is a system field, nce yu create it, yu can't edit it. The new flder is added t the wrkspace thrugh the RDC. Imprt - imprt an image file, dcument lad file, r prductin file int a specific flder. Highlight the flder, pint t Imprt, and select a file type. If yu have metadata, natives and images t lad, run the lad file imprt first, then the image file imprt. See Imprting thrugh the RDC n page 14. 8 1.3 Starting the RDC T pen the RDC: 1. Duble-click n the shrtcut installed n yur desktp. The Settings dialg bx appears when yu pen the applicatin fr first time. 2. Select r enter settings fr the fllwing ptins: Frce Flder Preview Default - ptins t enable r disable this feature. When enabled, the RDC checks the first 1000 recrds f the lad file after yu click Imprt. It then displays the number f flders sn t be created. Yu can use this infrmatin t ensure that the lad prcess is behaving as expected. If a large number f flders are listed, yu can stp the lad file, and verify that the Flder Inf field is set crrectly. By default, this feature is Enabled. See Imprting thrugh the RDC n page 14 WebService URL - enter the URL prvided by yur system admin. This URL is used t establish a cnnectin between the RDC and yur server. If the URL path is entered incrrectly, yu are unable t cnnect the RDC t yur database. The WebService URL has the frmat http r When yu display a Relativity page, yu see the web service name listed in the address bar n the brwser. Fr example, if the address bar displayed then yur web service URL wuld be RelativityWebAPI/. In additin, yu can cnfirm this URL with yur system admin. 3. Click OK. These settings are stred in yur machine registry and they are retained when yu upgrade the RDC. 1.4 Lgging n t the RDC Beginning in Relativity , enter yur Username and click Cntinue. Next, enter yur Passwrd and click Lgin. These are the same credentials yu use t lg in t Relativity. If the server certificate is untrusted, yu can allw using untrusted certificate r clse the RDC. Additinally, if yu have difficulty displaying the lgin dialg, verify that Relativity is a trusted site in yur brwser. Fr mre infrmatin, see Adding Relativity as a trusted site. 9 Nte: Users lg in t the Relativity Desktp Client (RDC) with the same prvider methd as they have with Relativity. The RDC supprts mst Relativity authenticatin prviders, such as passwrd, Integrated Authenticatin, and OpenID Cnnect, by displaying the Relativity lgin page within the RDC as a dialg windw. The nly prvider that desn't wrk with the RDC is SAML because the Relativity s IdP-initiated SAML desn't display the Relativity lgin page directly. After yu lg in, the RDC displays a list f wrkspaces where yu have access rights. Use the filter bar t narrw the list. Nte: By default, a wildcard is used t filter wrkspaces in the RDC. Fr example, enter ELA t find wrkspaces named ELAN and Relativity. Highlight yur wrkspace and click OK t pen it in the RDC. The flder structure f yur wrkspace displays. A new wrkspace cntains nly a rt flder, while an existing wrkspace may cntain subflders that yu can display by clicking the plus sign. Nte: In Relativity Desktp Client, Dcument is selected by default as the type f bject fr data imprt r exprt. Yu can als select ther bject types, including Relativity Dynamic Objects. 10 1.5 RDC OAuth2 client Beginning in Relativity , the RDC uses the OAuth 2.0 authrizatin framewrk fr verifying yur lgin credentials. The OAuth 2 client ffers increased security, because it uses an access tken that is valid fr nly three days. After the tken expires, yu must lg in t the RDC again. Any jbs currently in prgress fail when the tken expires. On yur SQL server, yu can extend the tken lifetime by editing the [AccessTkenLifetimeInMinutes] field in the [EDDS].[eddsdb].[OAuth2Client] view. Fr general infrmatin abut using OAuth2 in Relativity, see OAuth2 clients in the Relativity Admin guide RDC cmpatibility fr Relativity versins t Yu can use the RDC dwnladed frm Relativity with Relativity versins t but yu must create a new RDC OAuth2 client t d s Creating a new RDC OAuth2 client T create the RDC OAuth2 client, yu add a new client thrugh the OAuth2 tab in Relativity. Yu then run an SQL UPDATE statement n the EDDS database. Nte: Yu nly need t cmplete these steps if yu want t use the RDC dwnladed frm Relativity 9.5.x with Relativity versins t Open the OAuth2 client tab. 2. Click New OAuth2 client. 3. Enter fllwing values in the fields n the frm: Name - Relativity Desktp Client Auth2 Flw - Implicit Redirect URLs - Enabled - Yes Access Tken Lifetime Click Save. 5. On yur primary database server, run the fllwing SQL UPDATE statement n the EDDS database: UPDATE [EDDS].[eddsdb].[OAuth2ClientEncrypted] SET id = 'Relativity Desktp Client' WHERE name = 'Relativity Desktp Client' 1.6 RDC transfer mdes RDC supprts the fllwing data transfer mdes: Web - uses the HTTP client. This is the default mde. Because f the limitatins f the HTTP prtcl and varying netwrk bandwidth, it is the slwest. Relativity Desktp Client Guide - 10

11 Direct- uses the file share client. Direct mde prvides the fastest transfer speed. Aspera - uses the Aspera client. It is significantly faster than Web mde. The Aspera mde is nt available in n-premise Relativity installatins. When yu select a Relativity wrkspace, the RDC queries the wrkspace and perfrms tests t determine the ptimal transfer mde. Yu can see the details f the tests under Optins > Check Cnnectivity: The RDC then autmatically selects the ptimal available mde fr the transfer jb. Relativity Desktp Client Guide - 11

12 Nte: The mde initially selected based n the tests fr the wrkspace may nt be used in the actual transfer, fr example due t a cnnectin prblem. If a prblem ccurs, RDC falls back t a different mde r displays an errr. Yu can als frce RDC t use a specific mde. Fr mre infrmatin, see Cnfiguring the RDC n page Direct mde Direct mde prvides faster perfrmance, but it requires a cnnectin t the netwrk hsting the data, as well as specific Windws grup permissins. Direct mde has direct access t write t the file repsitry, which bypasses the need t g thrugh the web server in rder t ingest the data, saving a significant amunt f time Setup The fllwing cnditins must be met in rder t lad data using direct mde: The Active Directry accunt running the lad must have direct access t the Relativity File Repsitry and BCPPath flder. The laded data must be lcated n the Relativity system netwrk/dmain. The cmputer running the Relativity Desktp Client must be lcated n the Relativity system netwrk/dmain. The grup f users respnsible fr uplading dcuments thrugh the Win Relativity cmpnent (Relativity Uplad Users) must have Full Cntrl in the Dcument Repsitry Share. 13 members f this grup t imprt and exprt in Direct mde. Nn-members can nly imprt and exprt in Web mde. Fr mre infrmatin, see the Pre-installatin guide. 2 Using the RDC installer T use the RDC, yu must dwnlad a cpy f the RDC installer. 2.1 Dwnlading the RDC installer T dwnlad the RDC installer: 1. Open yur wrkspace in Relativity. 2. Select the Administratin tab. 3. Click Wrkspace Details t display the Relativity Utilities Cnsle. 4. Click Relativity Desktp Client (32-bit) r Relativity Desktp Client (64-bit) depending n yur perating system cnfiguratin under the Relativity Dwnlads selectin. 5. Cmplete the steps fr installing the RDC. See Installing the RDC belw fr mre infrmatin. 2.2 Sftware requirements Beginning , yu must upgrade t Micrsft.NET t install the latest versin f RDC. Yu must als install Micrsft Visual C Redistributable. Nte that yu can cntinue t use the already installed lder versins f the RDC. Beginning in Octber 2017, the RDC installer installs the VC++ redistributables autmatically. Nte that fr 64-bit Windws, bth Micrsft Visual C Redistributable (x86) and Micrsft Visual C Redistributable (x64) are required. RDC 9.5 versins befre require Micrsft.NET r abve and Micrsft Visual C and 2013 SP1 Redistributable. Fr additinal infrmatin, see the System Requirements guide. Yur perating system determines whether yu need t dwnlad the 64-bit r 32-bit versin f these applicatins: If yu're running a 32-bit machine, yu must install the RDC 32-bit and the Visual C and SP1 x86 Redistributable. If yu're running a 64-bit machine, yu want t install the RDC 64-bit and the Visual C and SP1 x64 Redistributable. Yu may ntice a significant imprvement in the speed f the RDC with the 64-bit versin. Hwever, a 64-bit machine can have bth the x86 and x64 redistributables installed at the same time, and it can run the 32-bit r 64-bit versin f the RDC. 2.3 Installing the RDC T install the RDC: Relativity Desktp Client Guide - 13

14 1. Click Run n the File Dwnlad dialg, and n any security messages. 2. Click Next n the RDC setup wizard t start the installatin. 3. Select n ne f the fllwing ptins n the Chse Setup Type dialg: Typical installs the mst cmmn prgram features. There is n difference between typical and cmplete setups. Custm prvides ptins t chse applicatin features and lcatin where yu want t install them: Yu can click n the icns in the tree t select the features that yu want t install. Click Reset if yu want t redisplay the default settings. Yu can als use the Disk Usage buttn t display the amunt disk space available and required fr the installatin. After yu have selected yur custm settings, click Next t display the Ready t Install dialg. Cmplete installs all applicatin features. There is n difference between typical and cmplete setups. 4. Click Install n the Ready t Install dialg t run the installatin wizard. 5. Click Finish when the setup is cmplete. Yur desktp displays a shrtcut icn fr the RDC. 2.4 Changing, repairing, r remving RDC installatin Yu can als run the installer t mdify, repair, r remve an existing installatin f the RDC. Run the installer n a machine where the applicatin is installed. Select ne f the fllwing ptins: Change - mdify the features that are installed. Repair - attempts t fix errrs in the mst recent installatin. Remve - uninstalls the RDC frm yur machine. 3 Imprting thrugh the RDC Yu can imprt dcument lad files, as well as image and prductin files, thrugh the Relativity Desktp Client (RDC). Yu need t install the RDC n yur cmputer befre yu can perfrm an imprt. Yu may als use the Windws Cmmand Line t imprt dcuments int Relativity. With the Windws Cmmand Line yu can autmate dcument imprting alng with ther parts f yur prcessing and integratin prcess. See the Cmmand Line Imprt guide. T imprt thrugh the RDC, yu must be part f a grup that has the Allw Imprt admin peratin enabled in wrkspace permissins. Relativity Desktp Client Guide - 14

15 Nte: Yu must be lgged in t a Relativity envirnment in rder t successfully imprt files. 3.1 Imprting multiple lad files simultaneusly Yu can safely imprt multiple lad files int the same wrkspace simultaneusly. Fr best results, use multiple machines and ne active instance f the RDC per machine. We recmmend limiting this t fur cncurrent imprts at a time int ne wrkspace. 3.2 Handling errrs Relativity skips any recrds with errrs that it encunters during the lad prcess. It warns yu abut any errrs that were encuntered after all the crrect recrds have laded. When yu click OK in the errr warning bx, Relativity creates a new dcument-level lad file with nly the errneus recrds. This file lists all the errrs that ccurred during the lad prcess. Yu are prmpted t save these recrds t prevent any lss f data. Chse a path t save yur errr file and click OK. After yu have saved yur errr file, yu can make any necessary crrectins t thse recrds, and then perfrm an Append Lad. A recrd f these errrs is als available in the Errrs tab, referencing the wrkspace name and Artifact ID. Relativity Desktp Client Guide - 15

16 3.3 Saving imprt settings Yu can save the settings used t imprt a lad file. This ptin is helpful if yu frequently wrk with yur wn internal prcessing tls r with the same prcessing vendr. T save yur imprt settings, pint t the File menu, and then click Save Imprt Settings. Chse a lcatin fr the dcument lad file (.kwe). Nte:.kwe stands fr kcura Win Edds. The settings fr the selected destinatin path and fr cpying files t a repsitry aren't saved in the.kwe file. When yu have an identically frmatted lad file, yu can use yur saved.kwe. In the RDC, pen the.kwe file, and select the file being laded. Yu can als update the path in the.kwe file. The fllwing illustratin displays the text f a.kwe file. The furth line cntains an abslute path t the dcument-level lad file t be laded. Update this sectin t pint t yur new lad file. After yu have updated yur.kwe file, select File and Lad Imprt Settings. Test fr any errrs, and then lad the file Saving a field map Yu can save the field mapping used t imprt a lad file. The field map is exprted as a CSV file that saves the mapping f the Relativity fields t thse in the dat file being imprted. Yu can save r view yur field map frm the Field Map tab r frm the File menu in the Imprt Dcument Lad File windw. T save yur field map: 1. 17 2. Click Exprt t CSV. Nte: When imprting a CSV file with currencies, the frmatted clumn must be Number. 3.4 Viewing audit infrmatin fr an imprt After yu imprt yur file, the RDC recrds and audits this instance in the Histry tab. Click Imprt t display the settings used fr the imprt. T view the transfer rate f the lad file, add the Executin Time field t the view, if necessary. 3.5 Lad file specificatins Using lad files, Relativity can lad the fllwing types f files: Metadata, extracted text, and native files Image and extracted text files Prcessed data These sectins detail the lad file requirements fr the respective file types Metadata, extracted text, and native files Relativity uses a flat, dcument-level lad file t lad metadata, dcument level extracted text, and natives files. Each line shuld represent ne dcument Encding The Relativity Desktp Client (RDC) attempts t determine the encding f a file, by default, when a lad file is first selected. T d this, the RDC checks the byte rder mark at the beginning f the file. Relativity Desktp Client Guide - 17

18 If there is n byte rder mark, it cannt determine the encding type. The types f byte rder marks include: Unicde (UTF16) Big-Endian Unicde UTF8 Everything else is cnsidered undetectable by the RDC and uses the default encding chsen fr the lad file r stand-alne extracted text file. A variety f lad file encding ptins are supprted, including: Western Eurpean (Windws) Unicde Unicde (Big-Endian) Unicde (UTF-7) Unicde (UTF-8) Other ptins, based n yur SQL sever Header rw Relativity desn't require lad file header rws. Hwever, they are strngly recmmended t ensure accuracy. The field names in yur header dn't need t match the field names in yur wrkspace Fields Relativity desn't require any specific lad file field rder. Yu can create any number f wrkspace fields t stre metadata r cding. During the lad prcess, yu can match yur lad file fields t the fields in yur wrkspace. The identifier field is required fr each lad. When lading new recrds, this is yur wrkspace identifier. When perfrming an verlay, yu can use the wrkspace identifier r select anther field as the identifier. This is useful when verlaying prductin data. Fr example, yu culd use the Bates number field rather than the dcument identifier in the wrkspace. All fields except Identifier are ptinal; hwever, yu may find sme f the fllwing system fields beneficial. 1. Identifier the unique identifier f the recrd 2. Grup Identifier the identifier f a dcument s family grup The grup identifier repeats fr all recrds in the grup. Usually, this is the dcument identifier f the grup s parent dcument. Fr example: If an with the dcument identifier f AS00001 has several attachments, the and its attachments have a grup identifier f AS If a grup identifier fr a recrd is nt set, the dcument identifier ppulates the grup identifier field in the case. This effectively creates a grup f ne dcument. Relativity Desktp Client Guide - 18

19 3. MD5 Hash the duplicate hash value f the recrd Yu can enter any type f hash value (and rename the field in yur case). If dcuments share the same hash value, Relativity identifies the dcuments as a duplicate grup. If a hash field fr a recrd is nt set, the dcument identifier ppulates the hash field in the case. This effectively creates a grup f ne dcument. 4. Extracted Text The text f the dcument. Either the OCR r Full Text. The extracted text appears in the viewer and is added t search indexes. This field can cntain either: The actual OCR r Full Text The path t a dcument level text file cntaining the OCR r Full Text. 5. Native File Path the path t any native files yu d like t lad. Bth relative and abslute paths are supprted. 6. Flder Inf builds the flder brwser structure fr the dcuments. This field is backslash \ delimited. If nt set, the dcuments lad t the rt f the case. Each entry between backslashes is a flder in the Relativity flder brwser. Each backslash indicates a new subflder in the brwser. Nte: Fr example, if the lad file cntained the fllwing entry in the flder inf field: Slinger, Ryan\ \deleted_items Relativity wuld build the fllwing flder structure: Each dcument with the abve entry wuld be stred in the deleted_items flder. 7. Relativity Native Time Zne Offset - Relativity s native viewer technlgy displays all header dates and times in GMT. This numeric field ffsets hw header dates and times appear in the viewer. If the value in this field is blank, r 0, fr a dcument, then the header date and time appears in GMT. Yu can enter a whle number in this field psitive r negative t ffset the time frm GMT t the lcal time zne f the dcument. Fr example, if the dcument was cllected frm US CDT time, enter -5 in the field, because the CDT ffset frm GMT is -5. This ONLY applies when viewing header dates and times in the Relativity Native File Viewer. Yur metadata fields display as imprted Accepted date frmats Relativity accepts date and time as ne field. Fr example, Date Sent and Time Sent shuld be ne field. If date sent and time sent ship separately, yu must create a new field fr time. Yu can frmat date fields t accept the date withut the time, but nt the time withut the date. Dates Relativity Desktp Client Guide - 19

20 can't have a zer value. Frmat dates in a standard date frmat such as 6/30/2017 1:23 PM r 6/30/ :23. Nte: When yu imprt data using a lad file with a date frmat that differs frm the frmat used n yur lcal machine, Relativity adjusts the frmat in the lad file t match that set n yur machine. The table belw lists the date frmats recgnized by the Relativity Desktp Client and the Imprt API. When yu access a wrkspace n a PC with UK reginal settings, the date appears as 4/9/2011. When yu access the same wrkspace n a PC with US reginal settings, the date appears as 9/4/ Delimiters During imprt, yu can designate which delimiters are used in yur lad file. Yu can select each delimiter frm the ASCII characters, The delimiter characters have the fllwing functins: Clumn separates lad file clumns Qute marks the beginning and end f each lad file field (als knwn as a text qualifier) Newline marks the end f a line in any extracted r lng text field Multi-value separates distinct values in a clumn. This delimiter is nly used when imprting int a Relativity multi-chice field. Nested-values dentes the hierarchy f a chice. This delimiter is nly used when imprting int a Relativity multi-chice field. It may be helpful t break up the types f infrmatin int distinct subgrups; such as lad metadata, natives, text, and images. Lading data in smaller amunts can assist with quality assurance. We recmmend having n mre than fur cncurrent RDC imprts running n the same server r in the same wrkspace. In additin, yu may see warning r errrs during an imprt under the fllwing cnditins: Native file with 0 KB - The RDC imprts nly metadata fr native files with the size f 0 KB. In the RDC, the Warnings tab displays a message indicating that the file is empty and nly metadata has been laded fr the recrd. In the viewer, users see extracted text when it exists fr the file. If the file has n extracted text, users see a blank placehlder, and n image r viewer ptins are available. See Cnfiguring the RDC n page 78. Lng file path names - If the lad file cntains a field used t set the flder path n the flders brwser, and the field is lnger than 255 characters fr a dcument, the RDC displays an errr message fr that dcument n the Errrs tab. File Clumn Headers - Relativity autmatically updates this sectin f the Lad File tab when yu select the file encding. This sectin may display the fllwing message befre yu select an encding fr the lad file. After yu select the encding, this sectin displays the fields in the lad file. The clumn headers in the file display as vertical list. The fields display in alphanumeric rder. The numeric value in parentheses indicates the psitin f the field within the file. Newline - select the character used t indicate the end f a line in any extracted text r lng text field. Multi-value delimiter - select the character used t separate chices within a field. 75 4.5.1 Fields n the Destinatin Files tab The Destinatin Files tab cntains the fllwing sectins with their respective fields: Exprt Lcatin - select a target directry fr exprting flders, searches, and prductin sets. Click t brwse fr a lcatin. Select Overwrite Files t verwrite any existing files f the same name in the target exprt directry. Physical File Exprt - select Cpy Files Frm Repsitry ptin. This is the default ptin and cpies files frm the file server t the specified exprt lcatin. If yu dn't select Cpy Files Frm Repsitry, Relativity desn't cpy the files t the exprt lcatin. Instead, the exprted lad files reference the repsitry lcatin f the files. Vlume Infrmatin - cntrls the naming and size f the vlume identifier. Set the fllwing ptins in this sectin: Prefix - enter the alpha prefix fr the vlume identifier. Start # - select the first number used fr the numeric sectin f the vlume identifier. Multiple vlumes increment numbers during exprt creating unique vlume identifiers. # f Digits - select the number f digits attached t the prefix. Text Precedence - select and assign an rder t lng text fields that Relativity checks fr text when perfrming an exprt. Yu must select ne r mre lng text fields t use this functinality. Click t display the Pick Text Precedence pp-up. T mve fields between clumns, highlight them and click the Right r Left single r duble arrws. 77 If yu add mre than ne field t the Selected Lng Text Fields clumn, Relativity adds the Text Precedence clumn as the last clumn in the lad file. During an exprt, Relativity checks the tpmst field in the Selected Lng Text Fields clumn fr text, and if the field is null, it checks the next field in rder f precedence fr text. When it finds a field that cntains text, Relativity adds the cntents f that field t the Text Precedence clumn in the dcument lad file, and then cntinues checking the fields fr the next dcument. Fr example, yu want the Text Precedence clumn in the lad file t cntain the cntents f the OCR Text field when it is available fr a dcument and the cntents f the Extracted Text field when the OCR Text fr a dcument is null. In the Pick Text Precedence pp-up, yu add the OCR Text as the first field in the Selected Lng Text Fields clumn fllwed by the Extracted Text field. If yu select nly ne field in the Selected Lng Text Fields clumn, Relativity adds the text t a clumn with the same name as the field, and des nt create the Text Precedence clumn. Nte: If yu want t imprve exprt perfrmance, yu dn't need t add all f the lng text fields yu select in the Pick Text Precedence pp-up t the Selected Clumns ptin n the Data Surce tab. When yu dn't select these fields n the Data Surce tab, but yu add them t Selected Lng Text Fields clumn, the RDC adds the cntent f these fields t the Text Precedence clumn as described abve. When yu add the lng text fields n the Data Surce tab, Relativity adds these clumns t the dcument level lad file. The Precedence Text clumn displays the file path t the exprted files if yu select the Exprt Text Field as Files checkbx. Exprt Multiple-Chice Fields as Nested - select this ptin t maintain the hierarchy f Relativity multiple-chice lists, when applicable. The nested value delimiter, a backslash, separates child chices.
