3 SURGE PROTECTION IN SIGNAL 1. Purpose The purpose of this document is to stipulate MTM requirements for the surge protection on the main signalling supply, sub power supplies (50V DC, 24VDC and 12V DC) and all input and outputs from signalling equipment external to SER s and Zones boxes. 2. Scope This Design Practice Note shall apply to all new or upgraded works involving 110V Signal Supply distribution and signalling control circuits. Typically there are two configurations namely:- 1. Configuration with the 2200/110V switches and transformer, main distribution switchboard and sub-busbars within the SER (Appendix A, Figure 1). 2. Trackside configuration with the 2200/110V switches and transformer housed in one HV enclosure, the main 110V switchboard in another enclosure (normally attached to the HV enclosure) and sub-busbars in separate Zone boxes (Appendix A, Figure 2). 3. Background The 2.2kV AC, High Voltage, signal power is stepped down to, where it is also stepped down to 50V DC, 24V DC and 12V DC to supply power to signalling equipment inside the SER s and Zone Boxes. protection for signalling equipment is required on all signalling power supplies, at all SER s and Signal Zone boxes to protect critical signalling equipment against lightning and other sources of overvoltage. 4 SURGE PROTECTION IN SIGNAL 5. MTM requirements 5.1 General Requirements When designing signalling enclosures, dirty wiring shall not be in the same duct as clean wiring. The incoming dirty wiring shall be terminated on termination rows that are located within the dirty area of the enclosure V Signalling Mains Supply protectors shall be installed for surge protection of the signalling mains supply. protectors shall comply with VRIOGS 12.2 Revision B and Design Practice Note Document Number L1-CHE-INS-016 shall be followed for the earthing of the surge arrestors. The main circuit breaker of the main distribution board shall be physically located as close as possible to the 2200/110V main step down transformer and shall not exceed 5 meters. protectors shall be installed at the following locations (Refer to Appendix A). Between the secondary side of the 2200/110V transformer and the main circuit breaker of the signalling mains within the distribution switchboard. protectors shall also be installed on the incoming and outgoing 110V AC signalling mains from SER s and Zone Boxes. 5.3 Signalling Circuits protection shall be installed on each incoming and outgoing circuits feeding signalling equipment external to the SER s and Zone boxes (Refer to Appendix A). All surge protection shall comply with VRIOGS 12.2 Revision B. In general, all external cabling to and from each SER and Zone box shall be connected to a surge arrestor (Refer to Appendix A). The type of surge arrestor depends on the type of signalling equipment and CBI (SSI, Westrace, WestLock and SmartLock) to be installed. 6.
