2 College Statement and Statistics President William L. Pollard Medgar Evers College, named for the martyred civil-rights leader Medgar Evers ( ), was established by the Board of Higher Education in 1969 to meet the educational and social needs of Central Brooklyn. In keeping with the philosophy of The City University of New York, the college's mission is grounded in the belief that education is the right of all individuals in the pursuit of self-actualization. Consequently, the mission of Medgar Evers College is to provide access and opportunity for all students to become dynamic scholars and change agents in their communities of a diverse and rapidly changing world. Baccalaureate and associate degree programs are offered, with almost 100 percent articulation between the two-year and four-year programs. A variety of non-degree educational, adult and continuing education, basic literacy and high school equivalency programs are offered to the diverse and surrounding communities. The college also offers extensive information and support through research, community-advocacy centers and social and cultural programs. The college celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2010 along with the opening of a state-of-the-art School of Science, Health & Technology building. This architectural jewel, with its prismatic glass edifice, makes a dynamic statement at the crossroads of Bedford and Crown Streets, announcing Medgar Evers College's bold strides into the future with 13 classrooms, six seminar rooms, 14 teaching labs, 36 research and instrument modules and six computer labs. Two other exciting projects are further turning the college into a campus of destination: the Library Expansion project, anticipated to break ground in early 2013, will transform an inefficient, disconnected and undersized library into a vibrant place of learning with 50 percent more space, increased programs, doubled technology work stations and increased group study rooms. This project also will give a facelift to the entrance of an otherwise perfunctory 1980s blank façade with a large glass wall panel that will pierce into the building, revealing the activities within and providing street presence to the main campus building. The other project, as envisioned in the 1995 Master Plan, is the proposed creation of a campus quad by taking over Crown Street and creating a block-long pedestrian walkway with open lawns for relaxing or ceremonial events and numerous "rooms" or intimate courtyards for collaboration or studying. This project will foster a sense of place, symbolically and literally, unifying the buildings into a campus. The oldest building in the Medgar Evers College-owned portfolio is the Carroll Street building, built in 1904 originally as the prestigious Brooklyn Preparatory School. Its aging infrastructure and generally inefficient layout has received sporadic upgrades and renovations over the years, including a recently completed spectacular pool renovation. Other infrastructure projects to upgrade this building will be launched shortly, and more need to be launched to bring the building back to its full functionality and former elegance. A new amended Facilities Master Plan will also soon be underway to help direct the next steps on a campus that has doubled enrollment since 1989 and is operating at 59 percent NASF per full-time equivalent student. This is less than half of the national average and among the lowest in the CUNY system. While the college may be hampered by a lack of space, such a deficit is not reflected in its sprit or its potential. Included in the new building will be classrooms, instructional labs, offices, athletic facilities, student study and meeting spaces, a conference center, administrative and campus services, a performing arts center, student clubs, faith centers, etc. The facility is planned to be approximately 130,000 gross square feet. August 2018 (B) New Ventilation Equipment at Bedford Building The Bedford Building chiller plant has exceeded its useful life. It cannot meet building loads and is in extremely poor condition. The inefficiency of the equipment results in costly energy waste. This project will upgrade and increase the capacity of the building's ventilation system, including the major central plant components of the boilers, chillers and air-handling equipment. A new computer-controlled system will be provided to monitor HVAC equipment, creating a more efficient operation and resulting in energy and maintenance savings. June 2015 (B) Campus-Wide Security Upgrades This project will create a unified security system and controls across the campus, including: upgrading and expanding CCTV for the Carroll and Bedford Buildings tied into the Academic Building I system; installing turnstiles connected to CUNY FIRST in the buildings; upgrading and unifying public address systems; creating a secondary emergency operations center in Carroll; fortifying the perimeter of the parking lot areas; creating a safe walking area for pedestrians through the Carroll parking lot; and upgrading the spaces expected to host evacuees or medical overflow from Kingsborough Hospital during emergencies. 5 City Reso-A Requests FY 2014 (City Council and Borough Presidents) (Costs in thousands) Gym Floor & Bleachers This project will replace the 7,550-square-foot gym floor with a new subflooring and a durable and easily maintained maple plank floor. The bleachers will be reconfigured and upgraded. Additionally, the 1,500-square foot stage will be leveled to the gym floor and have an infill of additional bleachers and athletic storage behind the new bleachers. $1,600 April 2015 Electronic Turnstile Access Control System This project will create an electronic ADA-compliant access control system for entrances of the campus buildings. The college seeks to establish a more effective physical access control process by using technology to enhance its manual entrance security protocols. Electronic turnstiles connected to a computer system capable of managing and tracking entry (including blocked or expired ID cards) will be installed at seven locations throughout the campus: three at 1150 Carroll St., one at Academic Building I, two at 1650 Bedford Ave. and one at 1637 Bedford Ave. July 2014 I.T. and Media Tracking Systems This project will provide real-time tracking of information technology and media hardware assets with radio frequency identity tagging systems. This system will operate in conjunction with college property management's fixed-asset inventory management system (INSITE) while providing integration with real-time alert of asset movements. $500 $250 July 2014 Pool Solar Water Heater System This project will create a rooftop solar renewable system to heat the water of the newly renovated indoor swimming pool in the Carroll Street Building. The building roof presents a suitable solar site with enough area, exposure and a flat surface to accommodate the panels and service clearance to heat the 131,000-gallon pool. This project will provide an installation cost payback of 10 to 15 years and will be a showcase of Medgar Evers' and CUNY's commitment to sustainability. Additionally, this project can be utilized as a teaching tool for the students enrolled in science and environmental science classes.
