8 FOURTH streaming video audio maximize button minimize button resize task bar toggle videoconferencing web cast A one-way video transmission over a data network. It is widely used on the Web. Streaming video is played within a few seconds of requesting it, and the data is not stored permanently in the computer. Audio is an electrical current (sound) that can be heard by humans. An audio card contains a special built-in processor and memory for processing audio files and sending them to speakers in the computer. An audio file is a record of captured sound that can be played back. Electronic messages or mail sent over the Internet A button in the upper-right corner of a window you click to size the window to cover the screen. A button in the upper-right corner of a window you click to hide the window; a button appears on the taskbar. Changing the size of a picture or graphic. 9 FIFTH file extension GIF One or several letters at the end of a filename. Filename extensions usually follow a period (dot) and indicate the type of information stored in the file. For example, in the filename EDIT.COM, the extension is COM, which indicates that the file is a command file. Pronounced jiff or giff (hard g ) stands for g raphics i nterchange f ormat, a bit-mapped graphics file format used by the World Wide Web, CompuServe and many BBSs. GIF supports color and various resolutions. It also includes data compression, but because it is limited to 256 colors, it is more effective for scanned images such as illustrations rather than color photos. JPEG Short for Joint Photographic Experts Group, and pronounced jay-peg. JPEG is a compression technique for color images. Although it can reduce files sizes to about 5% of their normal size, some detail is lost in the compression. pixels Short for p ixels p er i nch, a measurement of how a monitor displays an image. The resolution of an image displayed on a monitor is determined by its ppi, or the number of pixels contained within one square inch of monitor space. table A grid of vertical columns and horizontal rows; used to organize data in a document. wave file The format for storing sound in files developed jointly by Microsoft and IBM. Support for WAV files was built into Windows 95 making it the de facto standard for sound on PCs. HTML Short for H yper T ext M arkup L anguage, the authoring language used to create documents on the World Wide Web port An interface on a computer to which you can connect a device. Personal computers have various types of ports. Internally, there are several ports for connecting disk drives, display screens, and keyboards. Externally, personal computers have ports for connecting modems, printers, mice, and other peripheral devices. truncation Truncation Using an asterisk (*) to shorten a word to its root in order to retrieve all of the endings of a word. A bus is a collection of wires through which data is transmitted from one part of a computer to another.
