1 Introduction This document is a brief specification of the Visual and Radar Database for the area Haugesund - Selbjørnsfjorden (called Nor_Haugesund_Selbjoernsfjorden). It describes the database s geographic limits and navigable lanes and ports in the database area. Furthermore it gives an overview over files included in this release of the database, reference material that has been used during the development process and comments on this release and future releases of the database. 2 Description of Area The database Nor_Haugesund_Selbjoernsfjorden covers navigable waters and adjacent shorelines within the following coordinates: N , E N , E shows a map of the database area. Outside the main sailing area terrain and islands have been generated in order to create a background of the scenery. 2.1 Navigable Lanes Main lanes where navigation training can be undertaken are indicated by the red and blue lines in 1 and 2. Navigation outside these lanes might be possible, but it should be expected that the quality of the visual scene is reduced in these areas. Navigation marks, depth values, lights etc. outside the lanes defined for navigation training cannot be guaranteed for

For small islands and along the coastline where there was not sufficient with DTM data, we used municipal terrain data with a higher resolution. We have tried to keep the highest level of detail for small islands and coastal areas along the main lanes. Then we have gradually reduced the amount of detail if you move further away from the coastline. 14 illustrates the different degrees of detail used during the terrain generation process. 3 IVE: OpenSceneGraph Native Binary Format
14: Varying degrees of detail in the terrain
Visual File (*.ive) The visual files include Level of Details (LODs) for the terrain and objects in the database, and they have been converted to the IVE file format based on SeaView In this database we have experimented with the use of emissive layers to simulate lighting in connection with buildings and houses. See 15. Emissive layers will be visible gradually in the visual scene as the darkness settings increases: starting from approximately 30% darkness and it will be noticeable at approximately 40% darkness. In addition we also use Cultlights to simulate lighting. 15: An example of the use of emissive layers to simulate lighting at night time. Buoy and Lighthouse files (*.boy and *.nav) Buoys and lights are generated from the Primar ENC Database. The IALA Buoyage system A is used in this region. Depth File (*.dcs) Depth values are generated from the Primar ENC Database. Some minor parts of the navigable lanes south of the island Goddo were missing sufficient depth values. See 16. For these parts we have added appropriate depth values. We hope that this will not cause any inconvenience for the users of this database. We have noticed that depth values near berthing docks and pier areas seem to drop in value during runtime. The use of the fender file seems to be the cause for this. It is possible to go alongside the quay when the fender file is in use, but the depth values shown at the bridge will be lower than in the charts
16: The red lines in this figure show where depth values were added manually in order to assure navigable lanes. Hardware Radar File (*.rad) Due to the large area covered by this database, the source data for the radar files had to be reduced in a large extent. This results in thinner radar image where less important areas have been removed. Although the RAD file has been reduced as much as possible you might experience that the Furuno radar has difficulties to generate the radar image. That can lead temporary to a coarser radar image. This is usually the case at high speed and large turn rate. Software Radar File (*.rdb) Due to the large area covered by this database, the source data for the radar files had to be reduced in a large extent. This results in thinner radar image where less important areas have been removed
6 Next Version The next version may include an improvement of the visual scene by modelling more buildings in Leirvik and Haugesund and replacing some of the textures used in this version of the database with textures with a higher resolution. A further improvement of the visual scene would be to add more cultivation objects and lights. In addition the next version will include necessary improvements that will be suggested by the users of the database. 7 Contact Information If you have questions, find errors or would like to suggest necessary adjustments to the database, please contact us at the : Kareen Bröker Phone: / References i The Norwegian Coastal Administration s mapping solution, ii The Norwegian Coastal Administration s mapping solution, iii Mapping solution for administration and publication of digital ortophotos and satellite images, A collaboration of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the Norwegian Forest and Landscape Institute, and the Norwegian Mapping Authority. iv Digital Terrain Model (DTM) from the Norwegian Mapping Authority,
