3 1 Portal Interface The portal has four key components that you should become familiar before you start exploring the data. These include the Menu Bar, the Document Bar, the Filter Bar and the Document Viewer. This section of the user guidance provides a screenshot of each component and provides a brief description of how it is used. 1.1 Menu Bar The Menu Bar provides basic commands to help you interact with the Google Fusion table environment. 6 1.4 Document Viewer The Document Viewer is the space where tables, maps and charts are shown. Document Viewer Energy Saving Trust V page 5 of 26

7 2 Viewing Documents To view documents within the Portal, click on one of the tabs within the Document Bar. Once clicked, the Document Viewer will then update to show the selected table or map. Selected tab Energy Saving Trust V page 6 of 26

8 3 Interacting with Maps 3.1 Navigation Use the mouse wheel or the plus/minus buttons on the bottom right hand side of the Document Viewer to zoom in and out of the map display. Click Energy Saving Trust V page 7 of 26

11 You can also zoom into street view by dragging the Orange icon (shaped like a person and located above the plus/minus buttons) onto a road. Drag Energy Saving Trust V page 10 of 26

12 Please note that when viewing the map in street view, the data zone overlay will disappear. To exit street view, click the in the top left hand corner of the Document Viewer. Click Energy Saving Trust V page 11 of 26

13 3.2 Viewing Data To view the data for a data zone, click anywhere within the data zone boundary and a popup with the underlying information will appear. Click Energy Saving Trust V page 12 of 26

14 The popup box is divided into two sections: Geography Measure potential The geography section identifies the data zone and its corresponding local authority. The measure potential section shows the total number of dwellings in the data zone as well as the number of dwellings that are eligible for each measure. For reference we have also included the dwelling count as a percentage of the data zone in brackets. Energy Saving Trust V page 13 of 26

15 4 Changing the Base Map 4.1 Map View There are two different base maps that can be used when viewing the data: Map and Satellite. Use the buttons at the top left corner of the Document Viewer to toggle between these two options. The Map view is the default Google Maps base view. It has standard map labels and gives you the option to add terrain to the map. Click Energy Saving Trust V page 14 of 26

16 4.2 Satellite View The Satellite base map is composed of aerial photographs and is particularly useful because it allows you to see the buildings within a data zone of interest. Please note that the 45 degree angle view of buildings (shown below) is only available in certain parts of Scotland, particularly the most urbanised areas. Click Energy Saving Trust V page 15 of 26

17 When you zoom in really close on an area two new buttons will appear on the bottom right hand side of the Document Viewer. The button with the curved arrow allows you to rotate the map 90 degrees. The button beneath it allows you to toggle the 45 degree view on or off. Another advantage of the Satellite base map is that gives you the option to remove the map labels, making the map easier to view. Uncheck Energy Saving Trust V page 16 of 26

18 5 Filtering the Data 5.1 Map Filtering Click the Filter button in the Filter Bar and you will see a list of potential variables you can use to filter the map. Click Energy Saving Trust V page 17 of 26

19 Once you select the variable you wish to filter for, you will be able to choose the values you want to include in the filter. Your options will depend on the type of variable you have selected. If you choose a categorical variable (e.g. Local Authority) you will see a list of the possible categories. Check as many of the variables as you want to have them included in the map. As you check them the map will update to show the filtered map. You will also notice that Google adds the filter you ve selected into the Filter Bar for reference. 20 If you choose a continuous variable (e.g. percentage of dwellings in a data zone that are HHCRO eligible) you are able to enter a range of values you want to filter. The filter will tell you what the maximum and minimum values are to help inform your choice. As you can see from the screenshot below, it is possible to apply more than one filter to a given map (e.g. percentage of dwellings that HHCRO eligible in Glasgow). 21 5.2 Table Filtering If you prefer to filter data in a table rather than a map, you have the option to do so using the Filter Bar in the Data Table tab. Click Energy Saving Trust V page 20 of 26

22 6 Graphing the Data If you wish to view the data in a graph, you can do so by clicking on the red box in the Document Bar and selecting Add new chart. Click Energy Saving Trust V page 21 of 26

23 You can select the type of chart you want from the panel on the left hand side of the Document Viewer. Click Energy Saving Trust V page 22 of 26

24 You can then configure the data in the chart using the options to right. Energy Saving Trust V page 23 of 26

25 To change the appearance of the chart (e.g. add titles and labels, reposition the legend) click the Change appearance button at the top right of the Document Viewer. A popup box will appear that gives you the options to change various aspects of the chart. Click Energy Saving Trust V page 24 of 26
