DESMA 25 TYPOGRAPHY SUMMER 2016 TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS 1:15PM-5:00PM INSTRUCTOR Melissanthi Saliba T.A. Amanad Strojanov CLASS WEBSITE: CLASS THEMATIC: TYPE AND CINEMA COURSE OBJECTIVE This is an introductory course to the fundamental principles of the field that will help students develop their own typographic practice and reach the ability of their own expression. Typography will be explored both through the understanding of its rules and constrictions, as well as through the gradual exploration of the creative possibilities that it allows for. From focusing on the letterform as a unit, to looking at larger units of text, the students will gain formal understanding of their own tools of visual communication. The anatomy of letters, and the variations in their form, the typographic grid and column are some of the basics covered by the class. The students will also develop a process from ideation to production and completion and learn the tools and standards that it involves. The main software that we are going to be using is Adobe Indesign. Other software used will be Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop (for whenever the use of photography is required). COURSE DESCRIPTION Each session will involve: _The teaching of typographic design through the used software _Comprehensive mini lectures that will expose the students to the work of designers and typographers, as well as important ideas that have appeared in the field. _In-Class Assignments and Excercises _Introduction of Projects _Individual, as well as group critiques, during which students are going to participate in order to receive and provide responses to the presented work from their peers, the instructor and the teaching assistant. 1
COURSE THEMATIC TYPE AND CINEMA We are going to be focusing on typography and cinema. We will be looking at some designs for movies that have informed the typographic field through their aesthetics and the formal innovations that they instoduced. Soul Bass, Neil Fujita, Kyle Cooper are some of the designers whose work we are going to be looking at. Besides our focus on the specific thematic, we are going to be looking at typographical work that has played a major role in design, as well as art. 4 ASSIGNMENTS FOR ALL CLASS ASSIGNMENTS YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE A MOVIE. YOU MUST USE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IN THE GIVEN ORDER: {*NAME OF PRODUCTION COMPANY*] PRESENTS [*NAME OF MOVIE*] A FILM BY [*NAME OF DIRECTOR*] STARRING [*NAMES OF MAIN PROTAGONISTS*] SCREENPLAY BY [*NAME OF SCREENWRITER*] YOUR WORK MUST BE PRINTED AND UP ON THE WALL EVERY TUESDAY BY 1:15 PM SHARP #1 COMPOSITION AND USE OF SPACE (5 VARIATIONS) YOU USE: Times New Roman Regular/Roman 12pt Black color on white background CASE COMPOSITION + USE OF SPACE + TYPE SIZE (5 VARIATIONS) YOU USE: Times New Roman Regular/Roman Black color on white background #2 CASE TYPE SIZE Use values bellow and above the 12pt size previously used. Observe how the difference in scale affects the space that your type occupies. How are the parameters previously studies (Composition, Leading, Letter Spacing, Kerning, Letter Case) affected by the variation in size? #3 FONT STUDY (HOME ASSIGNMENT) Review the different Font Families that were introduced to you at class. Choose one that you think is the most suitable for the movie you have chosen. Pick a letter of the specific font. You can either print and trace the letter on a 7 x 7 piece of paper, or hand draw it on your own. 4
COMPOSITION + USE OF SPACE + FONT OF YOUR CHOICE + LIGHT AND BOLD (5 VARIATIONS) #4 YOU USE: The font of Your Choice Light+Bold Black color on white background One letter size per variation CASE LIGHT+BOLD While you can experiment with composition and space, for this assignment you have to use no more than one letter size per variation to see how light and bold differ in form and expressive qualities. COMPOSITION + USE OF SPACE + FONT OF YOUR CHOICE + LIGHT AND BOLD + ITALICS + SIZE COMBINATIONS (5 VARIATIONS) YOU USE: The font of Your Choice Light+Bold Black color on white background A combination of letter sizes per variation #5 CASE LIGHT+BOLD ITALICS SIZE COMBINATIONS This Typographic Jam is your time to shine and have fun with it. After having learned all the different formal elements that were separately introduced to you, now you have to focus on the message that you would like to convey through your typogaphic practice. Apart from the usual parameters you can play with now you can also use different font weights and different letter size combinations. COMPOSITION + USE OF SPACE + FONT OF YOUR CHOICE + LIGHT AND BOLD + ITALICS + SIZE COMBINATIONS + PUNCTUATION (5 VARIATIONS) #6 YOU USE: The font of Your Choice Light+Bold Black color on white background A combination of letter sizes per variation Punctuation symbols CASE LIGHT+BOLD ITALICS SIZE COMBINATIONS PUNCTUATION For the talkies you have to choose a line from the movie that you ve been working with and while experimenting with all of the elements that we have introduced think about the meaning of the specific line and how to convey it through the use of punctuation symbols. COMPOSITION + USE OF SPACE + FONT OF YOUR CHOICE + LIGHT AND BOLD + ITAL- ICS + SIZE COMBINATIONS + BLOCKS & RULES (5 VARIATIONS) YOU USE: The font of Your Choice Light+Bold Black color on white background (or 5
reverse) A combination of letter sizes per variation Punctuation symbols Blocks & Rules #7 CASE LIGHT+BOLD PUNCTUATION BLOCKS & RULES After familiarizing yourself with the use of shapes inside your composition, you now have to integrate rules and blocks to your designs. Think about the proportion between the shapes yor using in relation to your composition size and how to make use of the negative space as a formal element. So far we have been using black type on white background, but for this assignment you can use black as the color of your block and reverse the color of the type if necessary. COMPOSITION + USE OF SPACE + FONT OF YOUR CHOICE + LIGHT AND BOLD + ITAL- ICS + SIZE COMBINATIONS + BLOCKS & RULES + 2 PANTONE COLORS (5 VARIATIONS) YOU USE: The font of Your Choice Light+Bold A combination of letter sizes per variation Punctuation symbols Blocks & Rules 2 PMS Spot colors that you can mix #8 CASE LIGHT+BOLD PUNCTUATION BLOCKS & RULES COLOR After familiarizing yourself with the color and its use, you have to choose two PANTONE colors that you can mix and create spot colors for your compositions. FINAL PROJECTS PROCCESS BOOK #1 After reviewing all of your work for the assignments 1-8 you have to create a process book to include your 35 compositions. The book should be 7 x 7 in CMYK color and bound in your choice of binding. The inclusion of Assignment #3 (Font Study) is optional but highly recommended. While going through the editing procces keep in mind that the point of this project is to show of how you gradually moved through the different stages of learning and gaining more experience in typography. If you see anything that you created and now looks imperfect to you, it is best to keep it the way you made it, so that you can see the difference though what you have learned. MOVIE POSTER Create a 24 x 36 poster of your favorite movie. Don t forget to be aware of all the elements you have experimented with so far: 6
#2 COMPOSITION + USE OF SPACE + FONT OF YOUR CHOICE + LIGHT AND BOLD + ITALICS + SIZE COMBINATIONS + BLOCKS & RULES + PHOTOGRAPHY (optional) Please keep track of your formal and expressive decisions through the process as you are going to be sharing and discussing them with your classmates. ATTENDANCE Your in-class presence is mandatory and more than two unexcused absences will result to a failing grade. Classes start 1:15pm sharp. If you are more than half and hour late for more than twice you will get an absence. Any unexcused absence (other than emergency or illness) will reduce your grade by a half. You have to notify both the instructor and the T.A. that you are going to be absent, ahead of time. CLASS RULES Your participation to the class is the most important rule. Take time to analyze your peers work, listen to what they have to say talk to them. Ask questions, if anything is unclear, make comments. The use of mobile phones inside the classroom is strictly prohibited. While in class you cannot be checking your s or browsing on social media. GRADING Your final grade will be a result of the following breakdown: 20% PARTICIPATION & ATTENDANCE 40% ASSIGNEMENTS 40% FINAL PROJECTS 7
