15 Introduction A dual workflow: the 'Classic' and the 'Dynamic' workflow... The choice to use a particular workflow is defined by the user and can be redone for each new Print Job. A Print Job can go through only one workflow, either the Classic or the Dynamic one. Classic workflow steps cannot be mixed with Dynamic workflow steps and vice versa. Both Classic Print Jobs and Classic tickets can be converted to Dynamic ones, but not vice versa. 29 Introduction Classic Workflow The Classic Workflow is based on the HP DFE V (Only for users who upgrade the DFE from V to V.4.0) This workflow allows working exactly the same way as the V3.1.1 version, using the RIP kernel (FlexRip). Some small changes will be visible in the GUI - due to alignment with the look and feel of the Dynamic workflow plus some new features (grayed out if only available for the Dynamic flow). Note: For more info on the Classic Workflow we refer to the HP DFE V3.1.1 documentation

Main differences between V3.1.1 and V4.0 This new rip is constructed around an Adobe kernel: the Imaging Engine DFE. Since V4.0 'Dynamic' features are more advanced than those of the 'Classic' V ,Print Jobs processed on the V4.0 version will not be backward compatible with the older version. Classic Tickets and Print Jobs can be converted to Dynamic ones

21 The Classic and Dynamic workflow How to create a Classic or Dynamic workflow The decision which flow to use appears very early in the printjob creation. This will be set when choosing a workflow specific ticket which will set the printjob on either the 'Classic' or 'Dynamic' track. 41 The Classic and Dynamic workflow The path to the Classic Workflow [1] - Tickets 'New Print Job' > 'Settings' : select any ticket marked with a blue C icon: these are the Classic tickets which will put your job on the Classic track. During installation of the DFE, two default Classic tickets are delivered: the Classic Default and the Classic Default VDP ticket, to handle static and variable data jobs

A new HotFolder can be 'converted to a Classic one by assigning a Classic Ticket. Note: for more info how to use the Classic Workflow we refer to HP's DFE V3.1.1 documentation. 43 The Classic and Dynamic workflow The path to the Dynamic Workflow [1] - Tickets 'New Print Job' > 'Settings': select any regular yellow ticket to set the printjob on the Dynamic track. During installation of the DFE, a single default Dynamic ticket is delivered: the Default ticket, to handle both static and variable data jobs

23 The Classic and Dynamic workflow The path to the Dynamic Workflow [2] - HotFolders By default, the hotfolders are set to Dynamic. A new hotfolder is a Dynamic one, unless it is edited and modified by assigning a Classic Ticket to it. 45 The Classic and Dynamic workflow Converting Print Jobs and Tickets from Classic to Dynamic You can convert Classic print jobs and tickets to Dynamic ones, to "upgrade" them, but not the other way around. To convert a Classic print job to a Dynamic one: 1. Double-click the print job in the Client window. 2. In the Print Job Properties dialog that opens, click the arrow next to the Classic ticket icon on the top right and select Convert to Dynamic ticket. 3. The Classic ticket icon changes into a Dynamic ticket icon. 4. Click OK

24 The Classic and Dynamic workflow To convert a Classic ticket to a Dynamic one: 1. In the Tickets view, double click the ticket to convert. 2. In the Ticket dialog that opens, click the arrow next to the Classic ticket icon on the top right and select Convert to Dynamic ticket. The Classic ticket icon changes into a Dynamic ticket icon. 3. Click OK. Note: If the Classic print job or ticket contains finishing marks, they will be converted to Dynamic finishing marks as defined in the Configuration tool (see Finishing Marks). 47 File types - used in the Dynamic Workflow 24

PPML created by Smart Stream Designer, and following the strict definitions as agreed between HP and Esko. b. PPML as the result of a VDP job created in the Classic Workflow (or in the HP DFE 3.1.1) Remark: the PPML dependent files should be copied to \\[DFE server]\prepress\ytd 50 25

26 File Types By extension [3]: Printjobs (one-ups or repetitions): Jobs created on an AE client can be used to create a new printjob: interactively ('Create new print job') or over HotFolder: ('Drop file in hotfolder') support for: *. pafsc no support for: *.pdfsc; *.pdfpla 51 File Types By extension [4]: Printjobs (one-ups or repetitions): Jobs sent to the DFE from Adobe Illustrator (DeskPack s PowerLayout) 'PowerLayout Client' is not supported for the Dynamic Workflow. When sending jobs via the 'PowerLayout Client' a Classic PrintJob will be created. Note: The PowerLayout Standalone tool allows you to create and save repetitions as a Step & Repeat Template (*.srt) to be used in the Dynamic Workflow

29 File Types By functionality [2]: PDF: In the case of the multi-grid repetition, any of the grids can contain a mix of: a VDP template (*-vdp.pdf) and/or a multi-page PDF (*.pdf), and/or a single-page PDF (*.pdf); all in simplex or duplex mode. In case variable data is applied on respective grids, Content Filling Order and Breaking up (in blocks) can be set up for each grid. 57 File Types By functionality [3]: PS: Single file input in simplex mode and repetition Multiple file input in simplex mode and repetition No VDP

30 File Types By functionality [3]: PPML: Due to its nature, the PPML file is a VDP job containing both the variable data and a (single grid) repetition. No supplementary features can be applied on top.
