4 GENERAL OVERVIEW Automatic copies and bandwidth respect The XFile has access to all recorded footage on EVS XS/XT series servers through the SDTI network (XNet) or GbE network. When a clip is created on one of those servers, a copy can automatically be transferred to XFile in the selected file format in the setup. This copy is a background process and, in order to not disturb the live production, has a lower priority on the network compared to real-time transfers between servers for remote playback. If the network is not very busy, the transfer to the removable media can be performed several times faster than real-time. As soon as real-time transfers are required on the network, the backup process is slowed down to make enough bandwidth available to guarantee these new requests. Metadata Each clip is saved as a separate file on the removable media including video, audio and time code information but also all metadata associated with that clip: name, description, creation date, original location (server s/n, register), etc. Transfers and quality preservation The transfer between an EVS production server to the XFile is a data transfer: this means that no decoding/encoding process takes place at any point, preserving the original quality of the footage. As an example, all Super-Motion clips created on any networked EVS video server are stored by XFile amongst the normal files. The 75 fps nature of such material is maintained during archiving and is restored in a single pass without alteration. Therefore, restored Super-Motion clips can be re-used as Super-Motion footage (playback at 33%) or as a standard material (variable speed) just as if they were captured from the Super-Motion camera at the same moment. Backups and redundancy The XFile can also be used as a security backup of the network: should one server lose its footage for any reason (accidental delete ), clips can be restored from the XFile to any other EVS video server on the network. The XFile can be installed on XF2 station, which is equipped with 2 removable disks working as mirrored drives: each clip is automatically saved as 2 separate files on these drives. This provides a security copy in case of drive failure, and also gives the possibility to send these 2 drives to different locations/studios after the show. Each removable media has a capacity of 1TB or +/-85 hours of footage at standard bit-rate. MAIN FUNCTIONALITIES The XFILE s goal is the digital archiving of clips, playlists and record trains created on XNet network. Automatic backup The XFILE acts automatically and backs up all clips according to criteria defined in the Autobackup selection window: cameras, prefs, page, archive flag and timerange. Manual backup

5 The selection of the clips to back up is done manual. The operator is helped by the filters to identify the clips on the network. Streaming The streaming module allows the selection of cameras and starts the recording according to a time scheduler or to a manual command. Up to 6 channels can be backed up simultaneously. A 7th channel is preserved to browse the A/V material through the network. A clip/stream can be saved to different destinations (multi-target) and different files formats. For clips backup and streaming, all codecs from XT/XS series server are supported by XFILE and are saved to the following formats: EVS MXF MXF OP1a (SD IMX only) Quick Time Movie Quick Time Reference Avid Ingest Device CleanEdit Reference Avid MXF OPAtom MXF OP1a (Std SMPTE) Restore of clips archived The clips saved to XFile disks are restored/copied to XNet in LONG or SHORT mode. A batch of clips can be restored according to criteria location: Publish of clips saved to XFILE disks XFile clips saved to disks are available through the XNet. As the XFILE has the lower priority on the network it is not advice to play-back the clips directly from the XFILE disks. The Publish facility is mainly used to browse A/V material. Autorestore/Autopublish: The Auto Restore and Auto Publish functions enable the automatic restore/copy or publish of files from a folder to a defined location on an EVS video server. Preview and simple edition of clips: The clips can be previewed in the Edit Clip module and edited (shortin/out, clipname and keywords) XML control: XFILE supports XML jobs control for backup, streaming, restore and grab.

ORF WORKFLOW 17 SD/HD XTs and 7 XFile are spread over 4 ORF OB trucks. The ingests are dedicated to sport domain (80%): Formula One, Ski and Soccer; and to music events (20%).

7 ORF WORKFLOW 17 SD/HD XTs and 7 XFile are spread over 4 ORF OB trucks. The ingests are dedicated to sport domain (80%): Formula One, Ski and Soccer; and to music events (20%). After the event, all disks return to the ORF studio in order to be sorted/copied/cleaned on an XFILE. This XFILE is isolated from TV internal network. All disks are checked to avoid files corruption or virus infections. A first selection of files is saved to a second XFILE to be sent to the Final Cut Pro suites for post-production purposes. Other files selections are restored to an XT for playback and then to record tapes for external productions. The file formats in use are mainly PRORES 120 for HD and IMX OP1a for SD. This workflow is based on clip backup. For stream backup, ORF uses a tailor-made application developed by RADEC.
