3 3 MCC Student Guide to MCC GivePulse Service-Learning Defined: According to the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse, "Service-Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities." Purpose of this Guide: This step-by-step guide is designed to help students navigate the GivePulse database. Terms Defined on MCC GivePulse: Affiliates = Community partners Events = Project-Based Service-Learning experiences Impacts = the number of times a student has served Hours = the number of hours the student has served Dashboard = your personal homepage that tracks your total hours and impacts as well as lists the Service-Learning classes you are registered for on MCC GivePulse Purpose of MCC GivePulse: MCC GivePulse is used to connect MCC students, faculty, staff, and community partners. Students can find a site, find the necessary paperwork, and log their hours served. MCC faculty can keep track of their students progress, create events, and reach out to community partners. MCC Service-Learning Staff manages the users on MCC GivePulse, verifies hours, and tracks service experiences. 4 4 Navigating MCC GivePulse: 1. It s important to know your way around the database. 2. The Dashboard is your personal homepage that tracks your total hours and impacts and lists the Service-Learning classes you are registered for on MCC GivePulse. 3. Add Impact is where you log your hours. 4. Project-Based Service-Learning classes register for an Event. 5. MCC students directly contact approved community partner from the MCC GivePulse website. How to create an account on MCC GivePulse 1. Go to 2. Click on Log In on the top right corner of the page. 3. Click Log in via your college. 4. Use MCC username* and password (same credentials as My MCC), to log into MCC GivePulse. a. *Username is MCC A Number 5. Accept conditions and create account. 6. Once logged on, you will be able to see all of your courses listed, hours served, events registered for, Service-Learning documents, and a list of MCC approved affiliates. Directions to Finding a Service Site: 1. Log onto MCC GivePulse with MCC credentials (see section How to create an account on MCC GivePulse if you do not have an account). 2. Once logged onto MCC GivePulse, click on Affiliates on home page. 3. The affiliates list is where all of the approved community partners are listed. 4. There are over 200 community partners to choose from. 5. Use Search box to find specific sites or to narrow sites down to specific towns. a. Type in town name and the sites located in that town will appear. b. Type in a site name and that site and other similar sites will appear. 6. Once you find a community partner you want to serve with or are interested in, click on the name of the partner. 7. You are now looking at the community partner s MCC GivePulse page. Each community partner should have the contact person s name, , phone number, and organization s website listed on their page. a. If you cannot find their contact information, go directly to the community partner s website to find that information 8. Once you have decided on an approved site, call or the affiliate organizer to inquire about serving at that site. Plan to talk about if the site is a good fit, set up your service schedule, and fill out the required Service-Learning paperwork. 9. When contacting the community partner site supervisor, please use MCC , be professional, and follow-up if there is any communication lag.
5 5 10. During your first meeting with your new service site supervisor, please make your supervisor knows they will be receiving s to verify service hours. Example message to Community Partner Good afternoon / morning (include the person s name, if you know it): My name is Jane Smith and I am currently taking an Intro to Sociology course at Middlesex Community College. The purpose of this course is to explore issues facing communities, how societies develop, and how individuals interact with one another. A requirement of this course is to engage in a Service-Learning project at an agency in the community. I am very passionate about hunger and homelessness issues and would like to serve at your site. I need to complete a total of 22 hours this semester. I would appreciate the opportunity to talk with you about Service-Learning opportunities that are available at your agency. I look forward to hearing from you and can be reached via or on my cell (xxx) The best time to reach me is. Thank you for your time, Jane Directions to adding a site to GivePulse We strongly suggest that you choose a site to serve at that is on our affiliates list. If there is a site that you wish to serve at that is not on our Community Partner (affiliates) list, you can submit an application for the site to be added. Submitting an application DOES NOT guarantee that your site will be added. In addition to the site needing to meet certain criteria, the application to add a site must be submitted on time, no exceptions. Applications must be submitted no less than two weeks prior to the Service- Learning contract deadline set for the semester (this can be found on the MCC Service-Learning homepage). Application

9 9 Directions to Logging Hours on MCC GivePulse (Individual Service-Learning): 1. Go to MCC page. In the top right-hand corner, there is a search box. Type in Service-Learning and hit enter. Click on the first option to get the Service-Learning homepage. 2. Click on the MCC GivePulse logo to get to MCC s MCC GivePulse data base. 3. Click on the Login button on the top right hand corner of the page a. If it is your first time logging into MCC GivePulse, you will need to create an account. b. Click Login via your college c. Use your MCC credentials, A# for username and outlook password for password. 4. Once logged in, click on the green Add Impact tab on the right hand side of the page. 5. You will see the name Middlesex Community College on the top of the page with the option to click Change on the right-hand side with a trashcan. 6. Click on Change to find your site. 7. In the search box, type in the name of your site, the press search. 8. Click on your site which will autofill into the space where you first saw Middlesex Community College. Please be sure your site supervisor s name and in the Verifier s Name and boxes are correct since they will be verifying your hours. 9. Under Impact Date, enter the date you went to your service site. Start and end date will be the same day. 10. Under Impact Type and Measurement, type in the amount of hours you served. Round to nearest half or whole hour (ex. One hour = 1.0, two and a half hours = 2.5 hours, etc.) 11. Under the About your Experience, write a reflection about what you did, and write any feedback you may have. This section will help with your class s final reflection assignment. 12. For the Sharing and Privacy Settings, make sure to check off the Middlesex Community College box and the class that correlates to your Service-Learning. Leave all other class boxes unchecked. 13. Once steps 1-12 are completed, BE SURE TO click Save Impact. *Repeat these steps for every impact you submit until all of your 22, 36, or 44 hours are logged. How to register for a Project-Based Event : 1. Log onto MCC GivePulse with MCC credentials 2. Once on the home page, click on the option Events. 3. Once the Events page loads, scroll down to click on the event pertaining to your Project-Based Service-Learning class. 4. Click on the green tab that says Register to become enrolled in this event. 5. This is where you will log your hours each time.
10 10 Directions to Logging Hours on MCC GivePulse via an Event (Project-Based Service-Learning): 1. Log onto MCC GivePulse. 2. If not registered for event, follow steps a-d; if registered. a. Click on the option Events on the home screen of GivePulse. b. Once the Events load, scroll down to click on the event pertaining to your Project- Based Service-Learning class. c. Click on the green tab that says Register to become enrolled in this event. d. Once registered for this event, this is where you will log your hours each time. 3. If you are registered for the event, click on Dashboard on top right-hand side of screen. 4. Click on the Event link to bring you to your Project-Based Service-Learning. 5. Click Add Impact. 6. Under Impact Date, enter the date you went to your service site. Start and end date will be the same day. 7. Under Impact Type and Measurement, type in the amount of hours you served.
