2 My name is Nicholas Baker and I have lived and attended school in Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks area for approximately 24 years. I have walked, taken public transportation, and drove various vehicles from home to school and work using all of the areas adjacent to the proposed site. This Is an extremely congested area with hundreds of pedestrians who live, work, or attend schools in the area. Proceeding with this site as a Fire Station is a giant accident waiting to happen. Issues: a.this DEIR is inadequate because it misrepresents the health impacts to the firemen and stakeholders about the contamination. b.the DEIR for Fire Station #39 in their list of Objectives states 1.3 Be close to the center of the geographical area This site is definitely NOT in the center of the geographical area c.the Sound Mitigation Recommendations will not adequately mitigate the projects sound impacts from multiple sirens that can come at anytime of the night or day. The sound wall proposal does not include any scientific data that proves this will mitigate the sound. Worse, it ignores mitigation measures for sensitive receptors such as school children, elderly, disabled, or others when walking.it also does not include mitigation for resident s who live close by and would be impacted while outdoors in their yards, or when inside their homes. d.our community includes environmental justice communities. Outreach by the Bureau of Engineering was inadequate and a large group of residents whose first language is Spanish were never notified. Instead of providing notice in a Spanish newspaper, the outreach notice was only in the Los Angeles Times. Members of the public and stakeholders who asked to be notified of future meetings on Fire Station #39, were never contacted. Our Van Nuys Neighborhood Council was not allowed to have a public meeting on this issue. e. Due Process and equal protection was denied to us. There was an extremely limited time-frame to prepare for these meetings, There were more than 1900 pages of documents to review. If we were in Hancock Park or North Hills we don't believe we would have been treated in this manner. f. Our community supports and respects our fireman, but we do not support putting any of our lives or health and safety at risk. This Environmental Impact Report is inadequate. It fails to fully disclose the cumulative impacts of multiple sources of toxic contaminants and proposed projects, and fails to provide authentic scientific mitigation options. The potential serious health impacts from known contaminants at this site to the firemen and all the stakeholders support identifying an alternate location. The 6001 Van Nuys Boulevard site is not an option due to environmental history and concerns of the site. Thank you for your review.
