3 1 BACKGROUND Google Docs is a free Web-based office suite and data storage services that Google offers. The suite allows users to create and edit documents while collaborating in real-time with other users. Google Docs features a simple presentation program, spreadsheet, text editor, drawings, and forms. A spreadsheet is an application that allows you to store data, collate data and analyze data. The most powerful feature of spreadsheets are its cells which can contain numeric, alphanumeric, formulas and more. Each cell is unique, because each cell as an address. The intersection of a column (symbolized by the Alphabet) and a row (symbolized by integers). The cell addressing nomenclature is normally column then row e.g. A34, CC104, D5. Another powerful feature of spreadsheets is its ability to compute contents of a single cell or group of cells with similar cell formats. Scenario Scenario: You are taking a research and writing class and you selected to research on the topic of Andrews University Freshmen Facebook usage. In order to do this research project, you will need to create a survey form that you will send out to the Freshmen class. Based on your research on how to create surveys you came up with two options the paper form or in digital format. So since you took this class, now you know how to use Google Forms to create digital survey forms, send them via or even embed it to your website. 2 IN-LAB WORK 2.1 FILES YOU NEED None 2.2 SETTING UP 1. Start by going to Google.com and log on to your account. 1 P a g e

11 2.3 SHARING YOUR SURVEY Now lets share the form. NOTE: you can only share with users with a Gmail or Google accounts. If your receiptiant does not have either they will not be able to fill the form. In this case you might have to use Survey Monkey. 20 2.6.2 Dealing with data First let us copy the survey and its results to Google Spreadsheets: 18 P a g e
21 It should open the survey in a spreadsheet: Download the spreadsheet as a SurveyForm.xlsx Other options: 19 P a g e
22 If you want to get notification you can configure that too, send the responses to a different spreadsheet, unlink or remove the link between the form and the spreadsheet, you can download the responses into a CSV or a universal comma delimited format that can be opened in Excel or any other spreadsheet application or can be inputted to a database. 2.7 FILE TO UPLOAD: Upload the SurveyForm.xlsx for credit 2.8 OUT-LAB Scenario: You are doing a study on how people use mobile technology and the only way of doing this is to do a survey. Use Google Forms to create a useful survey that you can share and send out to your target study group Step 1: Setting it up Log on to your Google Drive account and create a new form. Use any other color other than the default. Change the title of the survey to Mobile Technology Usage 20 P a g e
