19 Purchasing Guide What type of computer system does Alliant University recommend? The general rule of thumb when purchasing a new computer is to purchase the most powerful computer you can afford. Buying a powerful computer (faster processor, more memory, and larger hard drive) will help to ensure that your computer will meet your academic needs for many years to come. The amount of memory installed in your computer is one of the biggest factors in its performance. The more memory you have, the faster your software will run, the more applications you can run at once, and the easier it will be to switch between applications. Can I use an Apple computer? Alliant computer labs and academic departments are Windows-based. If you have an imac, MacBook or are considering purchasing one, you may want to check with your school to see if there are specific program requirement issues. However, most students should have no difficulty using a Mac computer if they have a recent version of Mac OS X, a copy of Microsoft Office for the Mac, and a reliable Internet connection. * Please note that Microsoft no longer supports the Internet Explorer browser for Mac OS. We will not be able to ensure compatibility with Internet Explorer for Mac. We recommend using Firefox for viewing and interacting with Alliant web sites. Should I purchase a desktop or laptop computer? Students should examine their computing needs and habits to determine whether a desktop or laptop best suits their requirements. Laptops provide students with the flexibility of using the computer almost anywhere. Desktop computers offer more for the money, and are usually easier to upgrade. Some academic programs require the purchase of a laptop. It is extremely important to check with your school before purchasing a new computer. Which warranty/support plan should I purchase? The Information Technology Department does not provide support for the installation, repair, or maintenance of computer hardware, or the installation and configuration of computer software (including the operating system) for personally owned computers. It is important that you purchase a computer from a vendor that can provide these services for you. For hardware, it is recommended that a three-year, on-site warranty be purchased with your new computer. For both hardware and software, it is recommended that you purchase from a vendor that offers 24-hour, 7-daysper-week telephone support, and also has web-based support. Vendors As a member of the Alliant International University community, you are eligible to receive discounts on computer products from various vendors. These programs are being offered solely as a convenience and are not an endorsement by Alliant of any particular vendor or product. Alliant does not assume any liability for the performance, service, repair or maintenance of any product purchased under these programs. You can place an order online by following one of the following links: Dell Computers Academic Purchase Program Lenovo Computers Academic Pricing Apple Store for Education Microsoft, SPSS & Utility Software 19

20 How to Protect you re Password? Computer? Files and Data? NEVER share your password with anyone and do not choose options that allow your computer to remember your passwords. Passwords should not contain personal information (name, address, social security number, phone number, or student ID) or use a simple sequence (i.e ). It's very important to use strong passwords (a minimum of 8 characters in length and includes at least one letter, number and special character) Keep your passwords fresh! Use an antivirus / antispyware software, strong passwords and frequently apply software updates. Be careful with the attachments and install only trusted programs. Don t forget to lock the screen or logout when away and shutdown the computer when not in use. Restrict access to your documents and folders with strong passwords. Electronic Devices? Do not leave them unattended in public or easily accessible areas. Keep software up to date, use different passwords for different programs and devices, disable remote connectivity when they are not in use, and encrypt files. Identity when shopping online? Make sure you are buying from a reputable vendor and use secure information transmission methods. You should also look for a URL that starts with "https" and has the lock symbol before entering your credit card information. Social Networking? Type the address of your social networking site directly into your browser or uses your personal bookmarks. Be selective about who you accept as a friend on a social network, and assume that everything you put on a social networking site is public and permanent. Be careful about installing extra apps on your site. Account from Spam? NEVER reply to or click a link in a spam . Don t use your Alliant account or business address when you register on a Website or in a group. If you must sign up for services use a free address from a site like Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail to create an address for that purpose. Use a spam filter and never use your address as your screen name in chat rooms. Computer from Phishing?
