How to sign up for a computer

So when you go to the signup station you will be prompted for a campus ID and password.

After getting access you pick the machine you wish to use. We have various machines in the lab. We have macintosh computers and PC s. We also have Machintosh Computers with scanners. If you choose next available it will assign you to the next available PC.

After choosing a computer and if one is available you will automatically be assigned a computer. If you look at the ticket it will tell you the machine to go to.

Once assigned a computer you get 4 hours of use. If no one else is waiting for a computer you get extended another 4 hours. If you go to the bathroom and dont return within 15 minutes the computer will log you off and you will need to check out another computer. Save your work often and be sure to log off computer when you are finished. You are assigned a computer for 4 hours. If there are no other request for a computer you may extend the time for another 4 hours You cannot leave the computer unattended for more then 15 minutes. Be sure to log off computer when finished.

File Management

Device Speed USB 1.5 USB II 60 USB III 625 Flash drives are the most common method for saving files. All the computers in the lab use USB II. USBIII is not yet available.

FireWire FireWire We have firewire on the Mac computer. Firewire 400 is actually faster then USB II. There is less processor load on firewire as well as firewire is bidirectional.

SATA SATA SATA All of the computers in the Horn Center use SATA hard drive to hold the software. There is also a workspace or documents folder to hold your files. Files left on the hard drive will stay on the hard drive until someone deletes the files or 24 hours.

Be sure to eject the flash drive before removing When you use any external storage device it is important to properly eject the device from the software before physically removing the device. Failure to do this can cause damage to the device or data.

Be sure eject the flashdrive correctly before removing This is just as true on the macs as it is on the PCs.

FTP or Largest file you can to yourself is 2MB All campus accounts can store 100MB for 25MB of files or Web pages Files saved on the web-sites are public domain and should follow campus guidelines. So you forget your flash drive and you decide to a file to yourself. It is important to remember that the filesize for has a limit. This is true for other services such as gmail or yahoo.

So you a file to yourself and you open the browser and you double click on the file link to open word. This will work for a short time until you try to save the file. Word will then crash and you loose your changes. You should right click on the file and save it in the workspace. Then open the file from the workspace. Do not open a file directly from the browser Word will crash when trying to save or print. Save the file to the workspace then browse the workspace to open file

Software Available PC Mac Office 2007 Office 2008 ARCview SPSS Adobe photoshop Adobe illustrator Adobe InDesign Dreamweaver Flash SPSS Here is a list of the software available in the Horn Center Open Lab. We have CS2 on the Macs.
