In case of need, you can reread the IMT Mines Albi-Carmaux school rules on the ENT website. WIFI access 9 1 Gather your personal informations and log in To attend this course, you must be in possession of : your login (a short word, up to 8 characters, in lower case, generally composed with the first character of your first name and the beginning of your last name) your password your complete address (something like firstname.lastname@mines-albi.fr) In the login screen of the Linux computer, enter your login, your password, select the english language at the right upper corner and click on the Connect button Verify that the language in the menus is english. 2 Change your password Your password is PERSONAL. Don t give it to anyone! You can change it on the ENT website ( on the Numeric tab. For your new password, choose a 8 characters word (no dictionary word, no first name, no last name, no birthday dates,...). Find Mozilla Firefox in your launcher menu and launch it. Visit and change your password. A green message will inform you that your new password is accepted. 1

2 3 Configure your account You have to read your s everyday because important informations will be sent to you by this way. It is easier for you to use a real application as Mozilla Thunderbird. We have chosen to use Mozilla Thunderbird because it is an open source software and it runs on Linux, Windows and MacOS platforms. You can easily download it for free, and install it on your personal laptop. Then you will have to configure it. Here you will find all the informations needed to do it properly. 3.1 General parameters When configuring an application, you have to provide a list of parameters. You will find here an abstract of the suitable parameters needed during the configuration process. Incoming parameters Protocol : IMAP Server name : imap.mines-albi.fr Connection security : SSL (port 993) Authentication method : normal password User name : your login Outgoing parameters Server name : smtp2.mines-albi.fr Connection security : STARTTLS (port 587) Authentication method : normal password User name : your login In theory, you have two available addresses : firstname.lastname@mines-albi.fr and yourlogin@mines-albi.fr. But you must only use the complete address firstname.lastname@mines-albi.fr, because this will be the only one which will be correctly recognized by our mailinglist server. 3.2 Thunderbird configuration Find Thunderbird in your launcher menu and launch it. A mail account setup program is automatically started. At first, click on use my existing and a screen, as shown in Figure 1, will appear. Fill out the fields with your own personal data (replace First with your first name, LASTNAME with your last name, and yourlogin with your login, and click on the Continue button. page 2 / 9

4 Figure 2: Account settings To avoid forgetting to empty your trash, configure Thunderbird to do it for you. To do this, right click on your account name in the left frame and choose settings. As shown in Figure 3, at the left part, below your account name, select Server Settings, and in the right part, check the Empty Trash on Exit box. page 4 / 9

5 Figure 3: LDAP settings - Empty trash 3.3 Manage your contacts: connection to the MinesAlbi LDAP directory To avoid typing long addresses or wrong addresses, to contact MinesAlbi persons, it is easier to use an LDAP connection to the school directory. After having configured properly your Thunderbird to search into the LDAP directory, you will only have to type the first characters of your contact s name to obtain his address... To do this, right click on your account name in the left frame and choose settings to obtain the screen of Figure 4. At the left part, below your account name, select Composition & Addressing, check the box Use a different LDAP server and click on the Edit Directories. page 5 / 9

6 Figure 4: LDAP settings - Use LDAP In the window Select an LDAP Directory server, click on Add button. Fill out the fields as in Figure 5. Click twice on the OK button and, in place of none in the figure 4, choose the ldap new item. page 6 / 9

7 Figure 5: LDAP settings - Parameters Known limitations For security reasons, our LDAP server refuses to answer requests from outside the school. If configured to do so, Thunderbird will try to search addresses in the LDAP directory every time you compose a new mail and begin to type an address. As a result, outside the school, Thunderbird will hang a while (the time to obtain a negative answer to the LDAP connection request). This introduces a disturbing delay. To deal with this problem, you will have to install the LDAP-swapping add-on. This will allow you to check (or not) a box called Use LDAP. 3.4 Check your quota If you don t delete any message and if you don t empty your trash, your account will be soon in overquota. In this case, your mailbox will be blocked. You will not receive new s and you will not be able to send new ones, until you delete messages. To check the status of your mailbox, check the ENT website ( (Numeric, Quotas Mail). 3.5 Another way to check your s: the webmail You can read your s by opening the page in your favorite web browser. It is an old webmail, not very convenient for a everyday use, but it can be useful in some circumstances Be careful! We receive a lot of phishing messages. Their only purpose is to steal you your login and your password. page 7 / 9

8 Pay attention to the sender of the message, verify his address (if it doesn t come from mines-albi.fr, be more suspicious), verify the links you are invited to follow (again, if it doesn t refer to mines-albi.fr, be suspicious)... If you have followed a suspicious link and if you have provided your personal informations or in case of any doubt, change your password on our ENT website and advise the IT service. page 8 / 9

9 4 WIFI access To access the MinesAlbi school Wifi, you have to configure your laptop or your smartphone. You will find the required instructions in page 9 / 9
