1 Staff Guide Camtasia Relay set up and use Camtasia Relay screen recording software is available for staff use on networked PCs. In addition to recording everything that happens on screen, Camtasia Relay will capture audio via a microphone, and can provide an additional video feed via a webcam. The captured recording will be sent to a central server for processing before being placed on the streaming media server for viewing in multiple formats across different platforms and devices. The server allows easy embedding of videos within Moodle units. Step 1 In order to use Camtasia Relay you need to install a recording application on your local machine. There are two ways to install Camtasia Relay: Method 1: Standard University machine If you are using a standard University machine, install Camtasia Relay by selecting: Start / All Programs / Academic Applications / DCQE / Camtasia Recorder Relay. If Camtasia Relay is now installed please proceed to Step 2. Note: If you do not have the Start menu object available then please request this from IS by phoning (023) or ing servicedesk@port.ac.uk They will require your MAC address, which can be found on most machines by selecting: Start / All Programs / Utilities / Workstation Locator. The MAC address will take the format: ws4-64:31:50:2b:cb:f7-winxp, where the six pairs of digits are a unique alphanumeric combination. 1

2 Method 2: If you have administration rights on your machine Go to and log in with your standard University account details. Once logged in select Download Camtasia Relay Recorders. Choose the appropriate option for your machine/device. If you have difficulty logging in please contact Step 2 Launch Camtasia Relay by selecting the appropriate icon from the Start menu (Start / All programs / Academic Applications / DCQE / Camtasia Relay) or by using the desktop shortcut. Login using your standard University account details. 2

3 Step 3 Give your recording a Title and Description [1]. If you have multiple displays click Select a display to record [2] to choose the required display Note: If you have multiple microphones ensure you select the correct microphone for your recording by clicking Audio [3] at the top of the window. Failure to do this means that audio may not be recorded. Step 4 It is recommended that you use the blue test button to make a ten second test recording in order to ensure that sound and screen capture settings are correct. You can then begin your recording by clicking the large red rec button. Step 5 When you have finished recording, click the stop button. 3

4 Step 6 At this point you can review your recording. You can also trim the start and end of your presentation by clicking Trimming [4] and setting start and end points of the recording. If you have not already done so in Step 3, add a Title and Description [5] to your recording. You must also Select a profile the profile you select is dependent on the content of your recording. 4 5 If your recording is a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation then choose Presentation (otherwise choose Video). The Presentation option will produce an automatically generated table of contents based on slide titles within your presentation. This is particularly helpful for viewers of longer presentations who may wish to find a particular section of a presentation for revision. All recordings can be streamed directly to devices. If you wish for the viewer to be able to download the video, for example to allow viewing when an internet connection is not available, choose the Downloadable video profile. Alternatively contact elearn@port.ac.uk with the name of your recording, and the profile will be applied retrospectively. If you wish to edit your recording at a later date using the separate Camtasia Studio application (license required) then choose an option with editing (this option will increase the upload, process and publish time so should only be used if you intend to edit your recording). Please contact elearn@port.ac.uk to request your file for editing within two weeks of making the recording or it will be removed. Click Submit (you MUST upload your recording to the server before shutting down). 4

5 Leave Camtasia Relay running until the upload to the server has completed. The time required for this will vary depending on the length of your recording but should generally take no longer than three minutes for a one-hour presentation. Step 7 You will receive two s from the Camtasia Relay server the exact content of the s will vary depending on the upload profile you selected in Step 6. The first (which you will receive within an hour) will let you know that your recording has been uploaded successfully and will provide a temporary link where you can view your recording. Below is an example of the first (for the Video profile). If this takes longer than an hour to arrive please contact elearn@port.ac.uk You will receive the second once your recording has been fully processed and can be found within Compass (within a maximum of 24 hours). It will provide you with a permanent link for viewing your recording in Compass the embed code available on this Compass webpage will help you add your recording to a Moodle unit should you wish. Below is an example of the second . If this takes longer than 24 hours to arrive please contact elearn@port.ac.uk September
