2 Description IBM Content Manager VideoCharger turns digital video and audio into an effective desktop tool for learning, selling, and communicating. It provides real-time network delivery of video and audio to clients attached to the Internet or an intranet which eliminates the need to download or save the file before playing, and lets you leverage the power of video and audio for your business. Content Manager VideoCharger works with most Web servers already installed via an HTTP connection. This allows current Web sites to be enhanced with video and/or audio delivery with no impact to the Web server and no additional network connections to the client. Applications where Content Manager VideoCharger provides advantages include: Corporate training Delivers on-demand information when and where it is needed, whether on the plant floor or across the country. Distance learning Enhances retention through compelling video/audio presentations of information and can lower costs by all owing the presentation of information at a variety of locations simultaneously or when needed. Merchandising Improves the reach to new audiences utilizing networked kiosks, or the Internet, and can lower costs through reduced expenses. Video on Demand Provides delivery of high bit rate video to set-top-box configurations, for residence, business complex, hotel, or hospital. Internet video messages Through the use of IBM s HotMedia format, content owners can deliver streaming content to Internet clients using a transparent Java client, eliminating the need of proprietary client software. Content Manager VideoCharger has two components: Content Manager VideoCharger Server This server delivers streaming video and audio over the Internet and intranet environments. The server works with most Web servers to manage, store, and distribute video and audio content to clients. Content Manager VideoCharger Player IBM Content Manager VideoCharger Version 7.1 runs on Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT or Windows 2000 clients using a browser such as the Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. The player selects, receives, presents, and controls the playback of video/audio datastreams received from the IBM VideoCharger Server. The presentation screen size scales from default to full screen. Player enhancements include full enablement of IP Multicast, video/audio delivery from low bit rate to business-quality MPEG1 and MPEG2 (up to 15 Mbps) streams, TCP and HTTP stream support, and port configuration for passing through Internet firewalls. The player when used as a stand-alone helper application, supports a draggable screen, video segment selection for repeated play, and changing video selections without reloading the player. The player can also be used as a browser plug-in viewer that lets the HTML author integrate streaming video and audio with text, graphics, and images in the HTML page. The plug-in executes under the control of the browser and does not require an extra window for displaying the video. Mouse buttons provide player control. The player uses the Microsoft ActiveMovie multimedia subsystem, which is software provided, free of charge, by Microsoft Corporation and is licensed according to Microsoft terms and conditions. The subsystem is packaged with the IBM VideoCharger Player as a convenience to our customers. It is also separately available from Microsoft Corporation. IBM Content Manager VIdeoCharger can provide many benefits to your organization with it s wide range of features. IBM Content Manager VideoCharger, on the Windows NT/2000 platforms lets you take advantage of the power of video and audio with the excellent price performance of a PC Server hardware platform. When your video and audio needs require more scalability than is available on a single PC Server, IBM Content Manager VideoCharger on the AIX platform offers all the same video functionality and dramatically increased scalability. IBM Content Manager VideoCharger on AIX lets you start with any size RS/6000 uniprocessor, SMP, or SP and add additional RS/6000 systems or SP nodes to cluster into a video server complex as needs and requirements grow. For example, all IBM Content Manager VideoCharger functions can be installed on a single SP node. However, specific IBM Content Manager VideoCharger functions, such as Data Pump, Controller, or Presentation Formatter Server, can be installed on different servers or nodes on the same SP creating a video server complex. Simultaneous Support of Multiple Constant Bit Rate Datastreams IBM Content Manager VideoCharger can deliver low bit rate content (defined to be less than or equal to 600 Kbps) to clients attached to networks and higher bit rate business-quality content (defined to be greater than 600 Kbps) through high-speed transport networks. These networks include Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) running Classic IP or LAN Emulation, LANs (Ethernet 10 and 100, token ring,) and WANs (T1, E 1, T3, E3). Support for a Broad Range of Video/Audio Quality Levels IBM Content Manager VideoCharger gives you a choice of video and audio streaming rates to provide control over the amount of bandwidth consumed on the network and resulting video quality and volume of stored video content. You can select MPEG2 datastreams (up to 15 Mbps) for outstanding quality video delivery. MPEG1 is also available for high-quality delivery of full-screen (30 frames per second) video. IBM Content Manager VideoCharger also offers low bit rate (less than or equal to 600 Kbps) delivery of video and audio (as low as 160x120 at 7.5 fps), offering you a powerful way to control storage and bandwidth. IP Multicast This specialized routing mechanism allows a single stream to be distributed from a server to many concurrent clients, without burdening the network with numerous individual streams or with broadcast packets to everyone on the network. This very efficient process can be used to distribute much higher quality audio/video

3 streams to larger groups of clients than would otherwise be possible with separate video on demand streams. IBM Content Manager VideoCharger offers IP Multicast of MPEG streams. Industry-standard and Leading-edge Internet Protocols IBM Content Manager VideoCharger supports popular protocols, including IP and HTTP, and works with Windows 95/98/NT/2000 Web browsers, including Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. IBM Content Manager VideoCharger uses Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) for the transport of video and audio streams. TCP/IP and HTTP stream delivery, though less efficient, is also offered to allow for delivery of streams through network firewalls. RTSP server support is available to allow other RTSP-compliant clients access to streaming media. MTU Path Discovery This specialized function queries the network path between the server and the client, then sets the Maximum Transmission Unit to be the maximum size possible without repacketizing along the delivery path. This greatly reduces network overhead and improves the delivery efficiency throughout the network path. Other benefits IBM Content Manager VideoCharger can coexist and link with a variety of Web servers from most suppliers through the Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) in an HTML document. IBM Content Manage VideoCharger can employ either SCSI or SSA disk technologies for easy storage attachment and large storage capacities. Multiple adapters can be configured. Archive support that allows video to be stored on an IBM NetStore automated tape library or any TSM storage device is also available, offering you the flexibility to store the video content on less expensive tape media. IBM Content Manager VideoCharger includes comprehensive Web-based administration and configuration facility, accessible to authorized users through any supported browser. AIX Specific Features MultiMedia File Systems (MMFS) wide striping, large block sizes, real-time disk I/O scheduling, and Quality-of-Service is managed within this specialized media file system. Distributed DataPump architecture allows a single control server to support multiple data pumps so as the need for additional concurrent streams extends beyond the capacity of one server or SP node, additional data pumps (storage and communications nodes) can be added. Highly scalable Since the AIX VideoCharger takes advantage of the MMFS and data pump architecture, and runs on multiple systems or SP nodes (as a single image), it is highly scalable in terms of storage and output bandwidth. Enhanced Quality-of-Service Quality-of-Service is managed throughout the system from deadline disk I/Obbb. RSVP This is an emerging standard that supports end-to-end network resource reservation and control. NT Specific Features The IBM VideoCharger on NT offers a simple single box solution with easy installation and configuration. While not as scalable as VideoCharger on the AIX platform (you can not replicate the data pump on additional servers), IBM VideoCharger on NT offers all the same functional capabilities as on AIX. In addition, VideoCharger on NT offers embedded encoder support. This allows an MPEG encoder to be installed in the same system as the VideoCharger and VideoCharger will directly control the encoder s API for functions such as real time IP Multicast and real time IP Multicast with live recording of the stream. This is a very efficient yet powerful method of providing a broadcast of a live event while recording it for later re-broadcast with minimal network load. This is because only a single stream is distributed over the network even though it can be viewed by many users concurrently. Relational Database Support IBM VideoCharger offers DB2 UDB relational database support. For additional information on IBM Content Manager VideoCharger, visit our Web site: Content Manager VideoCharger V7.1 is the follow-on release to Content Manager VideoCharger V2, also known as DB2 Digital Library VideoCharger V2. What s New in Version 7.1 Content Manager VideoCharger V7.1 contains functional and usability enhancements to meet the increasing demand for access to and management of audio and video media. Version 7.1 is easier to install. Installation is more automated than previous releases. Enhancements to the installation procedures for VideoCharger include automatic configuration of commonly used Web servers and automatic calibration. For VideoCharger on Windows platforms (NT, 2000), the installation has been simplified and more automatic. Version 7.1 provides the capability of playing video without downloading a player. VideoCharger supports streaming HotMedia-supported files to the HotMedia player. What this provides is a transparent player, for example, no player needs to be installed on the client machine. The HotMedia player is so small, it is downloaded to the client just-in-time before the video plays. For more information on HotMedia, refer to: Version 7.1 expands Multimedia Archive support for TSM-supported devices on AIX. Now VideoCharger on AIX and Windows platforms can connect to both NetStore and AIX with TSM-supported devices. Version 7.1 has all the function added after the initial release of Version 2.0. This includes support for QT 4. QT 4 files can be streamed to the Apple QT 4 player from VideoCharger. The QT 4 player runs on both Macintosh and Windows platforms. So this support provides the capability to stream QT 4 files to the Macintosh platform. For additional information on this function, refer to: /videocharger/quicktime.html

4 Support for additional encoders (for example, Optibase and FutureTel) are included in this version. Version 7.1 supports servers and clients on the Windows 2000 platform. This program is EuroReady. Euro Currency For more information on the implications of the euro, visit the IBM euro Web site at: EuroReady Products IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the product, when used in accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly processing monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting the euro currency formatting conventions (including the euro sign). This assumes that all other products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) that are used with this product are also EuroReady. IBM hardware products that are EuroReady may or may not have an engraved euro sign key on their keyboards. Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM products specific to the EMU countries. Products that are not specific to these countries are deemed to be not ready for euro unless otherwise stated in the product s country-specific specifications. IBM Hardware Ready IBM supplies certain IBM products which include third party software (pre-loaded or not) and/or third party attached hardware. In these instances, IBM is not in a position to assert that these third party products are, in themselves, EuroReady. Therefore, such IBM products will be designated as Hardware ready. EuroReady Solutions IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the solution providers have: Analyzed the euro requirements, including the need to comply with relevant EC rules Built in appropriate function and can clearly demonstrate this by: Detailing euro related requirements Describing how these will be implemented in the solution Declaring when the implementation will be generally available The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be clearly identified as features of the Solution specification as described in the contracts document.
