2 Description HACMP builds on IBM s position as a leader in high-availability clustering technology with new and improved functionality for usability, installability, system administration, and additional hardware support. Support Added for AIX Fast Connect: HACMP now supports the AIX Fast Connect application as a highly available resource. AIX Fast Connect enables non-aix clients, such as Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows for Work Groups, DOS, and OS/2, to request file and print services from an AIX server. Support for AIX Connections was previously announced in HACMP Version 4.3. The clverify utility is also enhanced to detect errors in the configuration of AIX Fast Connect with HACMP. Dynamic Reconfiguration Resource Migration: The Dynamic Reconfiguration Resource Migration utility is now accessible through SMIT panels as well as the original command line interface. This utility allows for rotating and cascading resources to be brought online, offline, or moved. The SMIT panels will make this function easier to use. Swap Adapter: HACMP is enhanced to allow the swapping of an IP address of an active service or boot adapter to the address of an available, active standby adapter that is on the same node and network. The original adapter then becomes an available standby adapter. This removes the restriction that a node must be powered down in order to remove and replace an adapter that is hot plugged. This functionality is available through SMIT panels. ATM Hardware Address Takeover: HACMP now supports hardware address takeover on ATM adapters attached to the same switch. This support is already available for token ring, Ethernet, and FDDI adapters, and alleviates the communications problems that could occur with Adapter swap and IP Address Takeover for ATM adapters. Hardware address takeover is supported for classical IP and ATM LAN emulation. Hardware Address Takeover is limited to adapters connected to the same switch unit. HAView Resource Support: The HAView function is enhanced to show resource group submaps. The submap displays a symbol for each node in the cluster that participates in the resource group as well as a symbol for each resource defined in the resource group. The Node submap is updated to display a symbol for each resource group that the node participates in. Redirect HACMP Log Files: HACMP log file paths no longer need to be hard-coded. The pathname of the HACMP log files is now specified through SMIT panels. The location of the following files can be specified: clresmgrd.log clstrmgr.debug cluster.mmdd cl_sm.log cm.log cspoc.log dms_loads.out emuhacmp.out hacmp.out Emulate Error Log Driven Events: The AIX Error Notification facility allows customers to define procedures to handle errors that may not be handled by HACMP The ability to emulate these error log driven events is added to aid script developers in testing their scripts without actually having to make the error occur. Errors can be inserted into the AIX error device file (/dev/error) through the use of SMIT panels. Automated AIX Error Notification Facility: The Automated AIX Error Notification facility is enhanced to detect automatically what configured resources can be associated with an AIX error log event. The default action is to log these events in the hacmp.out file. Customers can develop their own scripts and associate them with these events. Node-by-Node Migration to HACMP/ES: To assist customers who are planning on migrating from the HAS or CRM features to the ES or ESCRM features respectively, the node-by-node migration function provides the capability of migrating from HACMP HAS/CRM to HACMP ES/ESCRM without having to bring the cluster down. To migrate from a previous release of HACMP HAS or CRM feature to HACMP ES or ESCRM feature, the customer must first migrate to HACMP HAS or CRM. C-SPOC Enhancements: capability to: C-SPOC is enhanced with the Make a disk known to all nodes Create new shared or concurrent volume groups Create new file systems on a shared volume group Remove a disk definition Replace a disk in an existing volume group These capabilities are accessible through SMIT panels. Online Planning Sheets Sample Program: The online planning sheet sample program provides a convenient method for the customer to execute the planning process for HACMP At the end of the process, the program provides the capability of generating a shell script containing the configuration commands that match the online planning sheets configuration. Publications: A new section is added to the HACMP Planning Guide and the HACMP/ES Installation and Administration Guide that provides guidance to application developers who want their application to work well with HACMP Also, the HACMP/ES Installation and Administration Guide has been split into two volumes. Additional Hardware Support: HACMP now supports the following hardware: 7026-H H H RS/6000 SP Attachment Adapter (#8396) Advanced SerialRAID Adapter (#6225) Easy Upgrade and Migration: Node-by-node upgrades (version compatibility) are available from HACMP for AIX Version 4. Cluster configuration and hardware can be expanded or modified without service disruption through the Dynamic Reconfiguration option. Version compatibility and Dynamic Reconfiguration eliminate the most common causes of scheduled cluster downtime

3 Conversion Utilities: HACMP includes conversion utilities to help you upgrade from HACMP Version 4 without installing each intervening version. The following conversions are provided for the High Availability Subsystem, Concurrent Resource Manager, and High Availability for Network File System features: HACMP for AIX, Version 4.1 HACMP for AIX, Version HACMP for AIX, Version 4.2 HACMP for AIX, Version (not from Enhanced Scalability feature) HACMP for AIX, Version (not from Enhanced Scalability feature) HACMP for AIX, Version 4.3 (not from Enhanced Scalability feature) The following conversions are provided for the Enhanced Scalability feature: HACMP for AIX, Version 4.1 HACMP for AIX, Version HACMP for AIX, Version 4.2 HACMP for AIX, Version (all features) HACMP for AIX, Version (all features) HACMP for AIX, Version 4.3 (all features) Year 2000 This product does not have date dependencies and is therefore Year 2000 Ready. Euro Currency This program is not impacted by euro currency. Product Positioning HACMP is a software program that provides highly available application services for RS/6000 uniprocessors, SMPs or nodes of an SP complex. HACMP detects system failures and handles fallover to a recovery processor gracefully with a minimal loss of end-user time. One method of delivering high-availability services is the use of redundant disks. HACMP provides additional levels of availability with Redundant Array of Independent Disk (RAID) subsystems, disk mirroring, or the Recoverable Virtual Shared Disk on the SP because, in addition to disk failures, it protects against network, adapter, system, and user-defined failures. Another method of achieving higher availability, fault-tolerant solutions use redundant, specialized hardware to provide the protection against system and application failures. While fault-tolerant solutions do not require system restart, they often do require changes to applications for full, fault tolerance support. HACMP provides high availability without specialized hardware or changes to most applications. A fault-tolerant system s redundant hardware cannot be used to perform additional application work while checking the health of the system and application. This makes the system s price/performance relatively expensive compared to HACMP 4.3.1, which allows redundant hardware and software resources to be fully utilized. HACMP also helps protect against scheduled downtimes for maintenance and system upgrades. HACMP allows you to upgrade software and modify hardware without loss of cluster services. HACMP provides loosely coupled multiprocessing services that allow HACMP to scale workloads. Such configurations, whether concurrent access or partitioned data access, provide the ability to spread a workload across multiple RS/6000 processors, sharing the disk and CPU resource of the clustered processors. The Concurrent Resource Manager feature of HACMP provides an open API that applications can utilize to provide concurrent access to shared disk. HACMP should be considered for SP and RS/6000 customers when running AIX Version 4.3.2, or later. HACMP will continue to be supported for customers who have not yet migrated to AIX Version HACMP/ES 4.3 provides support for up to 32 nodes in the SP, RS/6000 Server, and mixed SP and RS/6000 environments. In addition, ES provides RS/6000 Cluster Technology Availability Services (RSCT). With its enhanced scalability and offering of RSCT, ES should be the lead product when proposing HACMP solutions. HACMP/ESCRM should be proposed in concurrent shared-access environments with AIX Version 4.3.2, or later. Availability of National Languages: This product is a single, worldwide product utilizing AIX Version 4 (V4) internationalization and localization to provide development and usage of global applications for worldwide markets. The product provides the level of National Languages Support (NLS) provided in the prerequisite AIX V4.3.2 operating system except for the following limitations: This product supports translated screens, panels, and messages, but the Program Integrated Information (PII) is available in U.S. English and Japanese with the limitation that HACMP/ES and HACMP/ESCRM are available in U.S. English only. The Models 250 and 25T can be used in the HACMP server configuration, but due to slot limitations, a single-point-of-failure is unavoidable in shared-disk or shared-network resources. HACMP executing in a concurrent access configuration requires one of the following devices: IBM 7131 SSA Multi-Storage Tower Model 405 (supports up to eight nodes; no CD-ROMs or tapes can be installed) IBM 7133 SSA Disk Subsystem Models 020, 600, D40 and T40 (supports up to eight nodes) IBM 7135 RAIDiant Array Models 110 and 210 (supports up to four nodes; dual controllers recommended) IBM 7137 Disk Array Subsystem Models 413, 414, 415, 513, 514, or 515 (supports up to four nodes) IBM 2105 Versatile Storage Server (VSS) Models B09 and 100 (supports up to four nodes) Certain non-ibm RAID systems can operate in concurrent I/O access environments. IBM will not accept Authorized Program Analysis Reports (APARs) if the non-ibm RAID offerings do not work properly with HACMP The minimum configuration and sizing of each machine is highly dependent on the user s database package and other applications. Actual configuration requirements are highly localized according to the required function and performance needs of individual sites. In configuring a cluster, particular attention must be paid to: Fixed-disk capacity and mirroring (Logical Volume Manager (LVM) and database) Slot limitations and their effect on creating a single-point-of-failure Client access to the cluster Other LAN devices (routers, bridges) and their effect on the cluster Replication of I/O adapters/subsystems Replication of power supplies Other network software Whenever a process takes over resources after a failure, consideration must be given to work partitioning. For example, if processor A is expected to take over for failed processor B and continue to perform its original duties, A must be configured with enough resources to perform the work of both. HACMP Device Support: At this time, the following adapters are supported in the HACMP environment. Refer to individual hardware announcements for the levels of AIX that are supported. Refer to the appropriate system manuals for cabling information. Software Requirements: HACMP requires AIX Version (5765-C34), or later. HACMP SP configurations require Parallel System Support Programs for AIX, Version 3.1 (5765-D51), or later. Each processor within a high-availability server complex requires the licensed program HACMP to be installed. Except during the upgrade process from earlier releases of HACMP Version 4, all processors in the HACMP server complex must be at the same AIX operating system level, including PTFs and maintenance upgrades. Some of the devices supported in HACMP may require a later release level of the AIX operating system; refer to the specific hardware announcement for the AIX release levels required by the hardware. The HAView facility requires the installation of TME 10 NetView for AIX (5697-NVW). Compatibility: HACMP (5765-D28) is not compatible with the previous releases of the licensed product: An upgrade from HACMP/6000 Version 1.2, 2.1, or 3.1 to HACMP involves reinstalling HACMP on all nodes in the cluster. This means that at some point, the cluster must be brought down; however, with proper planning the downtime can be reduced

8 An upgrade from HACMP 4.1, 4.2, 4.2.1, or also involves reinstalling HACMP on all nodes in the cluster; however, the Version Compatibility function allows you to upgrade the cluster one node at a time, without taking the entire cluster offline. The Version Compatibility function is intended to ease migration for HACMP 4.1, and 4.2 customers, and is not intended to provide long-term compatibility between versions of the product. While HACMP Enhanced Scalability feature does not interoperate with the other HACMP features, its configuration and customization interfaces are identical. Except for the stated limitations, the Enhanced Scalability feature is functionally compatible with the HAS feature. Limitations: HACMP is designed to support client users on a LAN using TCP/IP. HACMP monitors and performs IP address switching for the following TCP/IP-based communications adapters on cluster nodes: Token-ring FDDI Ethernet Fibre Channel (not supported on ES) SP Switch ATM ATM LAN Emulation HACMP does not by itself execute a high-availability function beyond the nodes in an HACMP cluster. Since HACMP 4.3 is highly configurable, it is the customer s responsibility to determine how and to what extent high availability is implemented. Limitations of the HAS and CRM Features: clusters of up to eight systems. Limitations of the HANFS for AIX Feature Supports Supports clusters of exactly two systems only. Cannot run the HANFS for AIX feature (#0884) and the other HACMP features (#0882, #0883, #0885, or #0886) in the same cluster they are mutually exclusive. Cannot install the HANFS for AIX feature (#0884) and the other HACMP features (#0882, #0883, #0885, or #0886) on the same system they are mutually exclusive. Cannot support: Concurrent access configurations Cluster Node Snapshots, Quick Configurations, Dynamic Reconfiguration, or Cluster Single Point of Control VSM Limitations of the ES and ESCRM Features ES supports clusters of up to 32 SP nodes or RS/6000 systems. ESCRM supports clusters of up to 8 SP nodes or RS/6000 systems. Target mode SSA is supported (but the forced down function is not supported). VSM is not supported with a cluster greater than eight nodes. Enhanced Scalability cannot execute in the same cluster as the HAS, CRM, or HANFS for AIX features. SOCC and slip networks are not supported. Environmental Conditions that Affect the Use of HACMP HACMP supports LAN-attached clients with TCP/IP protocol. HACMP s time to recover from a failure depends, in part, on the amount of time it takes for AIX to detect the failure. Some token-ring failures cannot be detected in fewer than 60 seconds. HACMP does not support attached terminals using Local Area Transport-B (LAT-B) protocols. Clients most appropriate to an HACMP environment are ASCII terminals attached via LAN-based Terminal Servers, Xstations, or TCP/IP-based client systems (such as an X-server TCP/IP interface on a PC, UNIX workstation, or a UNIX server). Cluster nodes must be within the cable-length limitations of the shared disks, so the physical distance between nodes is limited by the total cable length of the shared disk cables. Transparency of a failure and the subsequent recovery to external users or clients is dependent on the HACMP configuration, the client system, and application protocol design. The AIX JFS does not support concurrent access from multiple nodes; therefore, storage accessed in a concurrent configuration must be in raw logical volumes. Some HACMP command operands should not be used on systems also running NetView or other programs that catch SNMP traps. Refer to HACMP documentation for details on the use of clinfo daemon with such programs. HACMP does not support Ethernet. While the version compatibility function will allow HACMP to co-exist in a cluster with HACMP 4.1, 4.2, 4.2.1, or 4.2.2, this function is intended as a migration aid only. Once the migration is completed, each processor in the server cluster should be at the same AIX and HACMP release levels, including all PTFs. The version compatibility function in HACMP assumes the customer is using hardware and software components supported in AIX Version National Language Support is fully enabled in the HAS, CRM, and HANFS for AIX features; message translation is provided for Japanese. Performance Considerations: HACMP cluster performance can be measured and reported many ways. In a Mutual takeover/partitioned Workload Cluster environment, the user s applications and data are spread across two to eight machines in a cluster. Data management and application management can be placed under the control of a single node for efficiency or on each node for performance. In this partitioned environment, minimal interaction between nodes in a cluster derives high efficiency in each node. When a fallover occurs and the backup machine takes over for a failed node, performance is degraded for that period of time when the node is down. In data sharing, LAN and file system overhead and data contention can reduce CPU efficiency. Where data must be shared, the concurrent access configuration can be utilized, but less efficiently than a single system because distributed locks must be maintained between cluster processors

9 Planning Information Customer Responsibilities: Customers who purchase two or more HACMP licenses are free to replicate the contents of the following file sets throughout their enterprise: cluster.haview cluster.base.client.lib cluster.base.client.rte cluster.base.client.utils cluster.adt.client.demos cluster.adt.client.include cluster.adt.client.samples.clinfo cluster.adt.client.samples.clstat cluster.adt.client.samples.demos cluster.adt.client.samples.libcl cluster.msg.en_us.client cluster.man.en_us.client.data Packaging This program is shipped on CD-ROM. If these conditions are met, SDF will enter an order for an MES to ship the release and will process the installation of the MES. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. mountain time. SDF will request the following information from the caller: Verification of customer name and number. Verification of ship-to address (for a permanent address change, the local IBM office must be contacted). Verification of media on which the update will be provided. If update is required on a different media than reflected in the profile and the customer is going to a higher density media than the original media type, SDF will make a permanent change. Examples of changes that SDF will make are going from 4-mm or 8-mm tape to CD. Number of software shipments to be generated. RS/6000 hardware and software systems serial numbers. Expected shipment/receipt date. Expedited software delivery requests.
