1 2 MOVING MAP The Moving Map provides you with position information when connected to an approved GPS receiver. Set Up Moving Map Display To meet your needs, FliteMap provides numerous options for setting up the screen. Although the initial set up allows you to use all of the FliteMap functions, certain tasks are more easily accomplished with the use of the Moving MapToolbars and In-Flight Controller. Set the Chart Theme There are two ways to set the chart theme: Select a theme from the Theme drop-down list in the chart toolbar. Right-click any area of map that does not contain a symbol, click Vector Chart Theme and select the appropriate theme. Figure 2-1: The Theme drop-down list. Moving Map 2-1

2 Set the Information Bars The Information bars provide you with information on your route and flight parameters. They allow easy editing of your route with keyboard only commands. To view the toolbars: 1. Click View > Customize Toolbars. 2. Select Moving Map. In-Flight Controller There are two ways to display or hide the In-Flight Controller: In-Flight Info Bars Click View > In-Flight Controller. Press CTRL + H. There are two ways to display or hide the In-Flight Info bars. Click View > In-Flight Info Bars > Show In-Flight Info Bars. Press CTRL + W. The drop-down list at the top of the In-Flight Info bar should be set to Default. This displays current Position, Active Waypoint, and Destination Waypoint, and other pertinent information. To view different options, select a new view from the drop-down list. RoutePack List There are two ways to display or hide the RoutePack List. Click View > RoutePack List. Press CTRL L. 3 Figure 2-4: The RoutePack List. Arranging the Information Bars You can arrange the way FliteMap displays the Information Bars and RoutePack List in a number of ways. To simply rearrange the location of the display, click the top edge (blue bar) of the box you want to move and drag it to another location. To resize the RoutePack List, double-click the top edge of the list then resize by clicking any edge or corner of the box. Beginning the Simulation The simulation allows you to practice using FliteMap and its associated features without the need for a GPS receiver and an actual flight. The simulated flight for this section of the user guide is from Centennial airport, Colorado (KAPA), to Walker airport, Colorado (KGJT) at an altitude of 12,000 feet MSL with a VOR/ NDB/Airport route type. Setting Up and Starting the Simulation Before you begin the simulation, you must set it up the way you want it to run. To do so: 1. Click Connections > External Device Setup. 2. 4 Figure 2-5: The External Device Setup dialog box. 3. Select the Use Simulator and Start Moving Map check boxes. 4. Select the route you want to simulate from the drop-down list. 5. Click Setup. The Device Setup dialog box appears. 6. Using the TAB key to move between fields, select the following settings for this tutorial. Symbol: Aircraft Tracking Mode: Keep Visible Time Compression: Compress By 50x Range Ring: Auto Size Project Course: Fixed Distance and 10 Nautical Miles Time compression allows you to speed up the simulation. If you do so, the Information bars simulate the speed, distance, etc. You can speed up the movement on the screen to varying degrees. For example, Compress By 50x indicates that the aircraft moves on the screen fifty times as fast as the aircraft speed you have entered. 7. Click OK to close the Device Setup dialog box. 2-4 Moving Map

5 Figure 2-6: The Device Setup dialog box. 8. Click Close on the External Device Setup dialog box. 9. Click Disable Track File from the Tracking dialog box that appears. The moving map begins just as if you had connected the GPS unit. You may stop or start the simulation again by clicking the GPS icon. Moving Map 2-5

6 Troubleshooting the Simulation If the simulator doesn t work: 1. Make sure you selected Start Moving Map during setup. To do so, click Connections > Connect GPS or click the Connect GPS icon. 2. Confirm that you selected the Use Simulator check box during setup by clicking Connections > External Device Setup. 3. Make sure the route you selected to simulate has at least two waypoints. 4. If the aircraft seems to be barely moving along the route, return to the External Device Setup Box and select a higher time compression factor, or zoom in on the chart (the further zoomed out you are, the slower the aircraft appears to move along the route). Working in the Simulation When the simulation begins, the chart repositions to place the aircraft in the horizontal center of the screen. You have a number of options if you would like to change the way the simulation appears: To scroll up/down or left/right, press the ARROW keys. To zoom in or out, press the PLUS or MINUS keys. To change the aircraft icon s position, click the Tracking Mode icon. (Each option, Off, Optimum, Center, Visible, and Route, changes the aircraft icon s position in the view.) Direct To Feature To change the chart s orientation, click the Change Chart Orientation icon. (Each option, North Up, Course Up, and Desired Track Up, changes the chart s orientation.) The Direct To feature allows you to enter a route direct to any point from your current location. To open the Direct To feature: 1. Click the Direct To icon. 2-6 Moving Map

7 2. Click any point off the route. The route alters to move the aircraft to the selected point. Notice that this new route is added to the end of the RoutePack List. 1. If you want to delete the new route, click it in the RoutePack List and press DELETE, or rightclick it and select Delete (you may need to restart the moving map). Route Properties Other properties can be accessed via the Route Properties box including: Cross Track Provides an alert when you deviate laterally from your assigned course. Waypoint Alarms Provide an alert when you are the selected distance from a waypoint. Locking a Route Locks a routes parameters from being changed. To open the Route Properties dialog box: 1. Right-click your desired route. 2. Click Properties. Figure 2-7: Moving Map 2-7

8 Editing the Route While in Flight This section gives you instructions on editing the route using keyboard strokes only, without the use of the mouse, as you might while actually flying with a laptop in the cockpit. Inserting a Waypoint using the In-Flight Controller Suppose shortly after takeoff ATC tells you to proceed from your present position to the Kremmling (RLG) VORTAC then direct to Grand Junction Walker (KGJT) on your planned flight route. To make this change, you first need to insert the RLG waypoint into your route. To do so: 1. Open the In-Flight Controller by pressing CTRL+H. 2. Press SHIFT + ENTER to place the cursor in the Edit field below the waypoint list. 3. Use the ARROW keys to scroll through the waypoints so your current leg is shown in positions F4 and F5. 4. Type RLG in the Edit box. 5. Press F10 to display the list of waypoints matching this description. 6. Use the ARROW keys to select Kremmling VOR. 7. Press F5 to insert the RLG waypoint before your next active waypoint. Notice that a proposed route is shown on the chart view. 8. Press F2 to Execute. Deleting a Waypoint Since you are to proceed direct to KGJT after RLG, you must delete the RIL VOR waypoint. To delete a waypoint: 1. Open the In-Flight Controller. 2. Delete any text in the Edit field by pressing BACKSPACE. 3. Click the corresponding function key next to the RIL waypoint. That waypoint appears in the Edit field. 4. Press F3 to delete. 5. Press F2 to execute. Notice that the changes are made in the chart view of your route as well as in the RoutePack List. Direct to a Waypoint To create a route direct to a waypoint: 1. Open the In-Flight Controller and start the Moving Map. 2-8 Moving Map

9 2. Press the corresponding function key next to the waypoint identifier, which places it in the Edit field. 3. Press F2 to execute. Getting Information Along Your Route You can get information about navaids and airports along your route using the In-Flight Controller. To do so: 1. Start the Moving Map. 2. Enter the navaid or airport identifier into the Edit field. 3. Press F To fly directly to this airport, press F2. 5. Press F2 again to execute. Emergency Diversion In an emergency situation, it may be best to let FliteMap sort out your options for you. If this is the case: 1. Press F12 any time to bring up a list of nearby airports. 2. Use the ARROW keys to scroll down the list and highlight the airport you want. 3. Press ENTER. A Direct To course from your present position to the airport is calculated and placed in the In-Flight Controller and displayed on the Chart View. It is also added as a new route to your RoutePack List. Other Editing Options The In-Flight Controller supports present position calculations and inbound intercepts to waypoints. To proceed from your present position to intercept the 250 radial inbound to the active waypoint: 1. Open the In-Flight Controller if it is not open. 2. Press SHIFT + ENTER to place the pointer in the Edit field. 3. Type 250/XYZ in the Edit field, with XYZ being the identifier for your active waypoint. 4. If there is more than one match to your selection, press F10 and use the ARROW keys to highlight the correct waypoint from the drop-down list. 5. Press ENTER. Notice the description of the waypoint under the edit box is modified to include R-250. Moving Map 2-9

10 6. Press the function key that corresponds with the active waypoint to insert this command ahead of the VOR. 7. Press F2 to execute. The proposed path will be from the present position to the 250 radial inbound to XYZ. FliteStar attempts to provide a reasonable 30 intercept. If this is not possible due to the geometry involved, FliteStar intercepts the 250 radial five nautical miles from XYZ. You may also use the same procedure to create an inbound intercept function for waypoints that are not the active waypoint. Once you enter the radial and the waypoint identifier in the edit window, select the function key associated with ABC. The proposed routing will be from the waypoint immediately proceeding ABC to the 250 radial inbound to ABC using either a 30 intercept or an intercept at a point five nautical miles from ABC, as described above Moving Map
