Beginning Tutorial the Lego In this tutorial, you will construct a simple hollowed-out block with a hole in it (looks like a Lego). You will learn the basics of creating and modifying sketches and features. 1. Go to Tools >Options. The Options dialog box opens. 2. Click the Units tab to open it. 3. From the Model Distances list, select Millimeters. Set Paper Distances to Millimeters, as well. 4. Click OK. The units are set to millimeters. All distances that you enter for designs will now be understood to be in millimeters. 5. Click File> New> Design. A new design window appears. Save in your CAD1 folder. Filename = legoinl_cad1_1. Remember replace INL with your initials and 1 with your period number. Watch Video 1
6. From the Design toolbar at the edge of the Pro/DESKTOP window, click Create Rectangle. 7. Move the cursor "+ " to the origin of the workplane - where you see the work axes displayed. Look in the dialog bar at the top of the design window. Position the cursor so that the dialog bar displays Snap to Grid (0, 0). This is the 0,0 point. These are the work axes. Snap to Grid Dialogue Bar 8. Press and hold the left mouse button and drag the cursor up and to the right. Don t worry about size right now; you will adjust the rectangle size later. 2
9. Release the mouse button to finish creating the rectangle. You have created four straight lines that form a rectangle. Watch Video 10. Hold Shift W to View onto Workplane. Shift-A to Autoscale (this makes your sketch fit better on your screen). Watch Video You will now modify the sketch profile using constraints to control length and height. 3
11. From the Constraints toolbar on the top of the Pro/DESKTOP window, click Sketch Dimension. 12. Click and Drag on a vertical line. See Demo. Click and hold here. Drag out to here. 13. You have now created a dimensional Constraint for the Vertical Line. Watch Video The Constraint for your line will most likely be different than
14. Repeat the above procedure on a horizontal line. Watch Video **Be sure to dimension only one of the vertical and one of the horizontal lines.** 15. Click the Select Constraints button on the Design toolbar. Then, Double Click on the vertical constraint. Change the value to Repeat the procedure for the horizontal constraint. Change the horizontal value to 100. Shift A to Autoscale your rectangle. Watch Video 5
17. Shift T to View Trimetric. This is the best view for seeing models in 3D. Shift A to Autoscale onto your screen. Watch Video 18. Go to Feature > Extrude Profile. Fill in the box as it is below: Notice that the extrusion is previewed in yellow. Be sure to change the Feature name to extblock. Click OK. Watch Video 6
19. Your Lego should look like the one below: 20. Click on the Smiley Face on the Bottom Toolbar. Your block will tumble. 7
Smiley Face 21. Hit the Escape key to stop tumbling. 22. Now, you are going to create a new sketch on the top face of the block. 23. Click on Select Faces. 24. Select the top face by positioning your curser so that the four lines that define the top face are highlighted in blue. See below: Watch Video Blue 8
25. Click to select the top face. The top face should now be red. See below: 26. Right Click on the top face, and select New Sketch. Name the new sketch Hole, and the workplane Top Face. Click OK. Watch Video 9
27. Shift W to view onto workplane. Select the Circle Tool and drag out a circle like the one below. Be sure your circle is not in the center. Watch Video 28. Choose the Sketch Dimension tool. Dimension the circle by doing the following: Click and release on the circle with the Sketch Dimension tool. Then click and drag on the circle Watch Video This will give you a Diameter 36.. The diameter of your circle will probably not be 29. Next, you are going to dimension from the right, vertical line to the center of the circle. 10
30. Click once on the right, vertical line. You will notice that the line prehighlights to light blue when you move your mouse over it. When you click on the line, it highlights to red. Take your fingers OFF of the mouse buttons after clicking. Prehighlighted to light blue when you move the mouse over the line. Highlighted to red when you click on the line. 11
31. Now, with your fingers off of the mouse buttons, slowly move your mouse over the arc of the circle. As your mouse crosses the arc, you will see a small, black square appear. 32. When the small black square appears, hold a left click and drag away from the circle. The direction that you drag doesn t matter. This will give you a dimension from the vertical line to the center of the circle. Watch Video 12
33. Click on Undo, and practice this technique 5 TIMES. Then, repeat the technique on the bottom, horizontal line to the center of the circle. 34. Click the Select Constraints button on the Design toolbar. Then, Double Click on the each constraint. Change them to the numbers indicated below. The circle should now be in the middle of the block, with a diameter of 50 mm. Watch Video 13
35. Shift T to view Trimetric. 36. You will now project the circle sketch to create a hole in the block. Look in the Browser Window. Be sure that the Hole sketch in the Top Face workplane is bold. This means that it is the active sketch. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! Features are applied to the Active Sketch only so be sure to check this every time you apply a feature (Extrusion, Projection, Sweep, Revolve, etc.). If the hole sketch is not bold, double click on the pencil icon next to the word hole. This will make it active. 37. Go to Feature > Project profile. Fill out the box as below. Be sure to change the Feature name to projhole. Click OK. Watch Video 14
38. Your block should have a hole in it, like the one below. 39. Now, you are going to change the location of the hole. This will introduce the Update concept. 40. Click the Select Constraints button on the Design toolbar. Double Click on each of the constraints on the hole sketch, so that they are the same as the ones below ( l-r 80, 45, 40). Notice that the hole sketch changed, but the projhole projection (feature) did not change. 15
41. Click on Update from the Top Toolbar. This updates the design so that the projhole feature is in line with the changed hole sketch. See below: Watch Video Note: If the Update button is not lit according to the sketches., it means that the all features are updated 42. If you don not see the hole feature, click on Select Features. 43. Now, you are going to Shell your design. This means that you will hollow out the solid part of the Lego. 44. Select Faces. Select the Top Face by prehighlighting the lines that define the top face, then clicking to select the top face. 16
45. Right Click, then select Shell Solids. 46. Fill out the box as below: 17
47. Your design should look like the one below: Watch Video 48. Select the front face, right click and Round Edges. See Below: Watch Video 18
49. Your finished Lego should look like the one below: 19
