Idea What it Could Look Like How ICT Connects GRADE 8 Public Service Announcement Movie or Presentation Using imovie, students create a second Public service announcement to increase awareness of a local (or global) issue. They may use a digital camera to film and/or create and present images in AppleWorks, HyerStudio or Corel Presentations. How to create a Cell Animation in HyperStudio ONTARIO CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS Writing communicate ideas and information for a variety of purposes and to specific audiences, using forms appropriate for their purpose and features appropriate to the form. Reading use a variety of conventions of formal texts to locate information they need. Oral and Visual Communications create media works of some technical complexity ICT STUDENT STANDARDS Communication and Collaboration design and present multimedia projects (e.g., web pages, newsletters, slideshows, movies) evaluate presentation methods and modify them for particular needs to effectively convey information to an intended audience Productivity and Applications accomplish curriculum-based tasks by using tool software (e.g., a multimedia presentation that includes sound, text, images, video, and animation) How to add pictures and voice in imovie

Idea What it Could Look Like How ICT Connects GRADE 8 Digital Yearbook Using HyperStudio, students create a class or school CD Yearbook to give to everyone at the end of the year. Scanned and digital photographs can be used. Other programs (e.g. imovie) can be integrated. The HyperStudio Player can be added so all students can view the CD at home. Ideas for Class and School CD s ONTARIO CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS Writing produce media texts using writing and materials from other media. Reading use the special terminology in a particular area of study, as necessary. Oral and Visual Communications create media works of some technical complexity describe a media work, outlining its different parts and the steps and choices involved in planning and producing it. ICT STUDENT STANDARDS Communication and Collaboration design and present multimedia projects (e.g., web pages, newsletters, slideshows, movies) Productivity and Applications create, modify, and evaluate documents that contain links and non-linear navigation systems (e.g., create a web page or HyperStudio stack about the Charlottetown Conference) Tips for Class and School CD s

Creating Cell Animations in HyperStudio Cell Animations are an easy way to make things you draw in HyperStudio come to life...if you re tired of flat animations like bouncing balls or pre-made animations like Addy driving his car, then cell animations are worth exploring. Here s a step by step to creating a simple one... (1) On a blank card, use the line and shape tools to draw a simple stick person...this will be the first cell (or frame) of your animation (2) Under the File Menu select Export Screen Hint: is the Keyboard Shortcut (Ctrl E on a PC)

(3) You want to save your exported screen to the HS Animation Folder...you may have to navigate to find it Once you are in the HS Animation Folder Save your first cell as Dance.01 The.01 is VERY important as it tells HyperStudio that this is the first frame in a sequence (4) Back on your card you can now modify your original stick figure for the 2nd frame... One way to do this is to erase the part you want to change and then re-draw it in a different position Hint: You can use the Magnifying Glass from the Tool Bar for a close up when redrwaing..just click it on the area you want to magnify

Another (slightly more complex) way is to use Rotate to change the position of things in your 2nd frame...here s how... (5) Using the Rectangle Selector Tool...trace around the area you want to modify Under the Edit Menu select Effects <Scale & Rotate Choose the Rotation Angle and Direction... Click OK when you re happy and the object you ve selected will be rotated

(6) When you ve completed all your changes select Export Screen again from under the File Menu This time name it Dance.02 It s essential that you give it the same first part of the name (in this case Dance) and suffix it.02 to indicate it is the 2nd in the sequence You could keep making changes and adding more frames.. suffixing them.03,.04 etc...but for now we ll stop at 2 and create the cell animation (7) Under the Objects Menu select Add a Button Under the Things to Do: choices select Play Animation

(8) Select Disk Library and navigate to the first frame you created (in this case Dance.01) (9) Trace around your picture Hint: If you use the Rectangle Selector you will also get the white background...if you use the Lasso you will just get your picture Click OK once you ve selected your image

(10) Now click and hold down your mouse... Drag the image to create the path for your animation... Release the mouse when you re finished and press the space bar.. The following screen will appear: Select Show first frame by clicking here If you want your dancer to stay on the page uncheck the Erase when done box! Click Allow clones for a new dancer every time you press the button...this ROCKS! Click Try It to see what the animation you just created will look like Want to try again? Click on Path and select New Path to redo your animation HEY...my stick person is dancing WAY too fast...slow down the Speed to 6 (or even 3) frames/second Happy?! Click OK

(11) Test out all your hard work...by clicking on your button... WOW are you good!!! (12) If you want to Edit your animation just select the Arrow Tool and Double Click on your Button...Select Actions...and Double Click on Play animation... The Animation editing screen will appear...make your changes and click okay when life is good

Slides, Flips and Turns in imovie imovie can be used to extend and reinforce the concepts of Slides, Flips and Turns in transformational geometry. What s great is that you don t need a video camera...all you need is KidPix or AppleWorks or HyperStudio and imovie...here s how : (1) Open AppleWorks Draw and select the Shape Creator Tool Draw your triangle

(2) With your triangle selected, choose a fill pattern or colour...voila your triangle will become that colour (3) Save your first shape by selecting Save As from under the File Menu...you could name it shape1 Click on File Format Select JPEG (or Pict) to make it easy to import your shape to imovie later on Press Save

(4) Now, go back to your shape in AppleWorks Click on it with the Arrow Tool Select Flip Horizontally from under the Arrange Menu Your Triangle will Flip 180º Save your triangle as shape2 Don t forget to save it as a JPEG (5) Go back to your shape again, Click on it with the Arrow Tool Select Rotate from under the Arrange Menu

Type in 90 to rotate your triangle 90º Click OK and your shape will be transformed Save your triangle as shape3 Don t forget to save it as a JPEG So...let s review...you ve made a shape in AppleWorks...flipped it, then rotated it... you ve saved 3 files as JPEG s...shape1, shape2 and shape3...now we re ready to import your work in to imovie... Let s Rock and Roll!! (6) Launch imovie If you re using an older imac you ll see the screen below...click OK and use the ignoring strategy... you don t need a camera...you ve already made the images for your movie in AppleWorks!

Click on New Project to start... Name your project and then click Create (7) You ll see a blank screen..to get your images select Import File from under the File Menu Hint: is the Keyboard Shortcut Navigate to your files... Hint: you can hold down the SHIFT Key and click to select multiple files

(8) All 3 triangles you made will appear on the shelf The first triangle you made (shape1) will be highlighted and also appear on the movie screen (9) With shape1 selected you ll notice beneath the screen a time setting...the default is 5 seconds...that means shape1 will appear for 5 seconds in your movie.. to shorten this time to 1 second (because after a while shapes are pretty boring)...click inside the time box and replace the 5 with a 1 (10) Now select shape2 by clicking on it in the shelf and do exactly the same thing (Step #9) to shorten the length it will play in your movie Same again for shape3...now all of your clips will be 1 second long

(11) Hold down the SHIFT key and select all 3 clips Drag them down to the clip viewer Press either of the Play Buttons to see what your movie looks like so far (12) Well...pretty impressive...but there s so much more to do! Let s give your movie a Title... Click on the Titles Button Select a Font Hint: Arial Black is perfect for imovie You can adjust the slider to make the font larger

Scroll Down to Select the Style for your Title...(Stripe Subtitle is pretty cool!) Select Over Black to make the title appear on a black screen Type in the Title of your first Transformation (Flip 180º) Adjust the Speed to decrease the time your title appear in your movie Click Preview to see what you ve created will look like To place your title in your movie just drag it in to the Clip Viewer in front of shape1 You ll see a little red line as your title is rendered into imovie

(13) You can now make the next Title you need (Rotate 90º) by repeating Step #12 Drag the Rotate 90º Title between shape2 and shape3 on your Clip Viewer (14) Now let s add your voice Click on the Audio Button Press Record Voice and Narrate your first Title (Flip 180º) In the Clip Viewer you ll see how long your audio track is...you may want to adjust the length to match your first transformation (or re-record your voice) To move the audio track simply click on it and drag the mouse To preview at any time just Rewind your movie and press either Play Button Hey!...maybe a good time to SAVE!

(15) Now let s work on our Rotation... First let s Copy shape2 and Paste it in front of shape3 Click on shape2 Select Copy from under the Edit Menu Move the Slider in the Clip Viewer in to the end of the Rotate 90º Title you ve created Select Paste from under the Edit Menu shape2 is now pasted in front of shape3 in the Clip Viewer... easy huh?? Hint: are the keyboard shortcuts for copying and pasting

(16) You can now record your voice narrating the Rotate 90º transformation by following Step #14 Hint: If you move the move the Slider to the start of your Rotate 90º Title in the Timeline Viewer then the audio track you record will start from where your Rotate Clips start. As described in Step #14 you may want to crop your audio tracks so that they match your clips Have you SAVED lately?? (17) How about adding some transitions?? Select the Transitions button Choose the Transition you d like Adjust the Speed (you ll need to make the transition shorter than the clips it s going to go in between...so if your shape clips are 01:00 (1 second) you could make the transition last 00:20 or 00:10

To place your transition in your movie simply drag it to the clip viewer and drop it between the clips (ex. between shape1 and shape2, between shape1 and shape3) You ll see the little red line as the transitions you chose are rendered (18) WOW!!! What a movie...to preview it just rewind and push Play After making any changes...you might want to SAVE!! (19) You can export your imovie to QuickTime so that anyone can see it... (without needing imovie) Select Export Movie from under the File Menu Click on the arrow beside Camera and change it to QuickTime

For a good quality QuickTime Movie I d recommend CD-ROM Movie, Medium The higher quality you choose, the larger your file size will be... for web sites Streaming Web Movie, Small is a pretty good choice Name your movie and press Save... Your whole imovie will be rendered in to QuickTime..depending on the length of your movie this will take several minutes... While it s rendering, congratulate yourself on a great job!!...hmmm, what s the next project?!?!?

Retelling of a personal event or story in KidPix Retelling of a story in imovie Class Poetry Anthology in HyperStudio Celebrating Student Work: Publishing Class Writing on a CD Narrating significant places in the community in HyperStudio...Acting out letters of the alphabet in imovie Class Anthology of Narratives in KidPix Slideshow (saved as a QuickTime movie for the CD) Class Anthology of Narratives in HyperStudio

How Creating a Class or School CD Connects with the ICT STUDENT STANDARDS Kindergarten Commincation and Collaboration begin to communicate ideas using pictures and text (e.g., use KidPix to retell a personal event or story) Productivity and Applications begin to explore tool software (e.g., KidPix) Grade 1 Commincation and Collaboration with assistance, communicate ideas and information using pictures and text (e.g., publish a narrative using KidPix SlideShow) Productivity and Applications begin to edit text and images within a document (e.g., modify colour of font, add clip art, erase images) Grade 2 Commincation and Collaboration use drawing tools to create images as part of a presentation in order to demonstrate and share knowledge about a specific curriculum topic (e.g., the life cycle of a butterfly) Productivity and Applications use text to communicate thoughts, ideas, or feelings (e.g., use word processing software to create a story, poem, or letter)

Grade 3 Commincation and Collaboration with assistance, begin to share ideas and information using tool software (e.g., AppleWorks Slideshow to explain how pioneers used natural resources) Productivity and Applications accomplish curriculum-based tasks by using tool software (e.g., create a report explaining how different features of plants help them survive) Grade 4 Commincation and Collaboration share ideas and information using tool software (e.g., create a HyperStudio stack describing the natural resources and physical regions of a Canadian province) Productivity and Applications accomplish curriculum-based tasks by using tool software (e.g., publish a procedure that includes sound, text, and images) Grade 5 Commincation and Collaboration present and share ideas and information using tool software (e.g., create a HyperStudio stack or web page describing the structure and function of the digestive system) Productivity and Applications accomplish curriculum-based tasks by using tool software (e.g., create an autobiography that includes sound, text, and images) with assistance, create documents that contain some links and a simple navigation system (e.g., create a HyperStudio stack or web page describing the structure of Canada s federal government)

Grade 6 Commincation and Collaboration begin to create multimedia presentations that include sounds and images from a variety of sources (e.g., visual images, clip art, sound clips, and animated images)* Productivity and Applications accomplish curriculum-based tasks by using tool software (e.g., complete a project describing the physical characteristics of the solar system that includes sound, text, images, and animation) create documents that contain links and navigation systems (e.g., create a HyperStudio stack or web page profiling early explorers) Grade 7 Commincation and Collaboration prepare multimedia presentations for a variety of purposes and audiences (e.g., a slideshow, movie, or web page describing daily life in New France) Productivity and Applications accomplish curriculum-based tasks by using tool software (e.g., a multimedia project that includes sound, text, images, video, and animation) create and modify documents that contain links and non-linear navigation systems (e.g., create a web page or HyperStudio stack about interactions within ecosystems) Grade 8 Commincation and Collaboration design and present multimedia projects (e.g., web pages, newsletters, slideshows, movies) Productivity and Applications accomplish curriculum-based tasks by using tool software (e.g., a multimedia presentation that includes sound, text, images, video, and animation) create, modify, and evaluate documents that contain links and non-linear navigation systems (e.g., create a web page or HyperStudio stack about the Charlottetown Conference)

Creating a Class/School CD in HyperStudio Step by Step/Hints & Tips/Checklist Mind Map what you want to include (hint start small and simple!) Share with Staff you d like to help/contribute...solicit their ideas and suggestions Share with Students...solicit their ideas and suggestions Come up with the Assignment/Project you want the kids to do (see samples) Work and Save, Work and Save...Periodically back up to an external source (ex. Zip Drive, Portable Hard Drive, CD) Use the non funky fonts (Arial, Times New Roman) to avoid font substitution...if you must go funky make all text boxes large and scrollable Set the Deadline EARLY (ex. May 15th...which of course really means June) Check the CONTENT of all the contributions Make the card size no bigger than 640 x (14 inch monitor friendly) Use Text Field Tamer to make all text fields read only

Check the File Names of all the contributions...rename if necessary...suffix all your stacks in HyperStudio.stk...Use the 8 (or less).3 naming convention for happiness in the PC World If you re using Morph open the files in QuickTime Pro and re-save them as self contained movies...suffix all your QuickTime movies.mov Put all your HyperStudio Files in the SAME FOLDER and avoid Aliases (not PC friendly) Build the Main Page that will launch and link to all of your files...save it as start.stk or begin.stk or even astart.stk Create one HOME button and paste it in to the first page of each individual stack Put HyperStudio Player for both Mac and PC in a labelled folder on the CD - (also include the QuickTime Player) - Get Toast (approx. $95) and burn Hybrid CD s (i.e. usable by both Macs and PC s) Burn a test CD...review it on a Mac (not the one you created it on!) and on a PC The smaller you make the CD the faster it is to burn copies (just because CD s can hold 700 MB doesn t mean they should!) Consider having the students making their own covers (buy some shiny paper and cut it to CD size) Give the CD s out on the last (or second last) day of school to avoid a million questions CELEBRATE with your students/parents/staff!

KidPix Files On a PC life is simple, they will be saved as.bmp files -- they will open in virtually any paint/graphics program the student has at home. On a Mac you ll need to convert them -- this is not that hard. PhotoShop Elements allows you to Batch Process any number of files at once. Here are the steps: (1) Put all files in 1 folder. (2) Launch PhotoShop Elements (3) Select File<Automate<Batch (4) Select the Source Folder (where your KidPix Files are) (5) Choose BMP as the File Type (6) Check the Rename Files Box -- Choose Document Name (7) The Windows Compatibility box should be checked (8) Specify a Destination folder where your converted files will go (9) Press OK and sit back and watch Elements do all the work! If you forget any of this -- clicking the Help Button takes you to Adobe s web site with these steps, and more detail than you d likely ever want to know. KidPix SlideShows On a PC (1) Save your SlideShow as a AVI movie (it's one of the Save options) (2) Go to your Multimedia imac (it has QuickTime Pro on it's image) (3) Open up your SlideShow in QuickTime (4) Select Save as from the Menu and check the box that says "self contained movie" On a Mac (1) Save your SlideShow as a QuickTime Movie (it's one of the Save options)...suffix the file.mov (2) Go to your Multimedia imac (it has QuickTime Pro on it's image) (3) Open up your SlideShow in QuickTime (4) Select Save as from the Menu and check the box that says "self contained movie" Include the QuickTime Player for both Mac and PC on the CD

AppleWorks SlideShows Most people don t have AppleWorks at home but there is a workaround. You can use a PDF Creator to create pdf s of your AppleWorks SlideShows, Projects etc. At you can download the shareware version of Print to PDF -- it s also on the ASIT Resources and Utilities CD. Simply drag the PrinttoPDF icon into your extension folder and you re good to go! In theory Acrobat Reader is on almost every computer -- if a student needs it to view the files it s a free download at On a PC there is workaround without buying Acrobat Writer -- it s not as sweeet. to download the freeware version of Ghostscript preview edition of PDF Factory (places a watermark at the bottom of each page) OR -- Adobe Acrobat 5.0 for Windows or Macintosh can be purchased for around $85.00 for a single copy, this is the academic price and should be ordered through the SAP system as an LPO. This is full version of Acrobat and well worth it for many other reasons! To sum up, It ROCKS! PowerPoint SlideShows No problem -- just include the PowerPoint Viewer. It s available for both Mac and PC platforms at Web Pages Life is simple...the files will open in the student s browser at home. -- just make sure on the Mac you stick to 8.3 naming conventions and for both platforms ensure you have consolidated all your image files, and media files in specified folders. imovie Again, life is simple -- just make sure to include the QuickTime Player on the CD. CD-Rom Medium Quality is a good compromise between file size and movie quality when you re exporting your imovies.
