1 Searching ReferenceUSA U.S. Consumer/Lifestyles Module

2 To access the BRS databases go to the Lancaster Chamber website at and click on the BRS icon located at the bottom of the page.

3 To access the BRS databases, use the click here hot link, which will take you to the login page.

4 Note that the list of databases in the center of the page is greyed out. You must now login to access them. In the pink box at the top of the page click logged in which will take you to the login page.

5 Enter your user name and password. Please note that this is not the same user name and password you use to login to the Chamber website. You will be given a different login name and password once you have subscribed to the BRS.

6 Before you begin your database searching you must check the agreement box above.

7 Scroll down the list to select ReferenceUSA and use the hot link under the logo to click to access the database.

8 You are now on the ReferenceUSA home page, where you can choose from business or consumer databases. On the consumer database page, select U.S. Consumers/Lifestyles by clicking Start Search.

9 Use the Quick Search to find information on a specific person. Enter last name and first name, along with city and state, if known, in search boxes. Click on View Results to start the search. Enter search data and click View Results.

10 Results appear in summary format. Click on last name of person to view the detailed listing.

11 The custom search allows you to search for a targeted list of consumers from over 260 million households by selecting as many criteria as you choose from the menu on the left. Depending on the criteria you select you will get broader or narrower results.

12 Place a checkmark in each of the boxes for the criteria you wish to search. Enter the specific data in the boxes that appear in the middle of the page. Click Update Count to start the search. When revised count appears, click View Results.

13 Results of search are displayed alphabetically by last name in summary format. To view full record, click on last name of person.

14 You may print or download 500 records at a time. There are 25 listings per screen so you will page through multiple screens until you reach the limit. Click in the box next to First Name to mark the first 25 records, go to next page and mark next 25 records. Repeat process until you reach 500 listings. When you are ready, click Download

15 The download screen gives several options for file format and level of detail. Select Excel format. Select the level of detail that best suits your needs. The Custom option allows you to pick and choose only those fields you need. Click Download Records.

16 You can choose to either open or save the document. You may save to a desktop, document file, flash drive or other personal device.

17 This is what the list looks like when saved as an Excel spreadsheet. Be sure to save the file as an Excel Workbook. Depending on number of results, you might have multiple files that will have to be cut and pasted into one master file. Do that before deleting any rows and columns you do not need. Information can then be sorted by clicking on Data on top navigation bar and then selecting Sort.

18 After completing download, click on the Back arrow.

19 Before selecting the next group of companies to download, click First Name to remove existing checkmarks. Select the next group of companies and repeat download process as many times as necessary.

20 To view the results on a map click on the Map link above results list.

21 Results are presented on a heat map showing higher or lower density of households by location, home value or home income. Areas in red have the most density.

22 As you zoom in on the map the red pinpoints show locations of households from the results list. In areas where there are several households in close proximity it will be denoted by a plus sign marked on the pinpoint. For detailed information about each household click on the pinpoint and a dialog box will open up with name, location and link to full record. Where there are multiple locations on one pinpoint it will indicate 1 of 2 records. Use the right arrow to scroll to the next record.

23 You can create a pie chart or bar chart from your result list. Click on the Charts link.

24 Create your chart based on estimated home value, estimated home income, state or city. The result list must contain at least 50 records in order to use this feature.

25 To switch to the bar chart view click on the icon below the pie chart. You can print or download the image using the icons at the upper right corner of the page.

26 Consumer Snapshot criteria will give you more detailed household information, however it is considered sensitive data, so when you view the results you will not get a list of names and addresses. Instead, you will get a Data Summary page.

27 Within the results, to see the composition of the list, click Summary and then click on your filter selections. You can view results in chart, matrix or table format. Click Show Summary

28 Here is what the results look like in the Chart View. Results list broken down by estimated home value.
