1 TropeTrainer TM Software V5 Single Parsha Edition Quick Start Guide Installing TropeTrainer software on a Macintosh Computer (Windows on next page) You must be logged in to your computer as an Adminstrator user to install TropeTrainer. F Open Safari (or your favorite web browser) Go to the download web page: F Scroll down the page and click the link: Mac: Download TropeTrainer software F When the the download is done, open the Download folder, and find and double-click the TTMacSetup.???.dmg file. A new window will open. F Double-click the TTMacSetup install icon The installer will open. F Enter your password for your computer and click OK F This page contains step-by-step instructions for installing Trope- Trainer software on a Mac. If you already know how to install software on a Mac, just go to the link shown to the left, install the software, and skip to page 3. F Agree to the license agreement by clicking Continue. -...then click Agree F Click Install The software will install on your computer F After the installer finishes the installation, click Quit. The installer will close and Trope- Trainer software will open on your computer. F To restart TropeTrainer software later, open a Finder window and select the Applications folder. Find the TropeTrainer folder and click to open it. Double-click the TropeTrainer icon to start the software.

2 Installing TropeTrainer software on a Windows Computer (Mac on previous page) You must be logged in to Windows as an Administrator user to install TropeTrainer software. F Open Internet Explorer (or your favorite web browser). Go to the download web page: F Scroll down the page and click the link: PC: Download TropeTrainer software F This page contains step-by-step instructions for installing Trope- Trainer software on a PC. If you already know how to install software on a PC, just go to the link shown to the left, install the software, and skip to page 3. F Click Run when prompted to Run or Save the file. If your browser does not prompt you to Run or Open the file, click Save and after the download is complete, run the file from the location you saved it to. The installer will start. F Click Yes to agree to the license agreement F Click Next to finish the install process F Click Finish and TropeTrainer(tm) software will open on your computer. F To restart TropeTrainer software later, or to start it if the installer doesn t automatically start the software:click the Windows Pearl (Start button in XP) Click All Programs. Find and click TropeTrainer(tm) software V5 from the list of All Programs. 2

3 Activating TropeTrainer software The first time TropeTrainer software starts, it will ask you for your activation information. Your activation information is in the from your synagogue. F Enter your serial number as shown in the , and click Next. If the Next button doesn t become enabled, double-check how you entered your serial number. Make sure to include all the dashes, and don t leave any spaces between anything. Only zeroes and ones are in the serial number, no O or L. F Enter your name Exactly as it appears in your activation . (If your name is shown with a middle name or middle initial, or there is a period after the initial, be sure to include it.) Click Next. F Enter your activation code exactly as shown in your activation . Your-serial-number Your-activation-code If you ve entered your serial number, name and activation code exactly as they appear in your activation , the Continue (to activate) button will become enabled. F Click Continue (to activate). TropeTrainer software will thank you for activating. 3

4 Choosing your Single Parsha and Opening your Readings The Single Parsha edition of TropeTrainer software lets you select your one parsha (weekly or holiday Torah reading) when you start the software for the first time, and stores that selection for future times that you use the software. F Select your reading from the Open reading window that is displayed. Your reading and year are shown in your activation . If you have any questions, ask your bar/bat mitzvah instructor. Year: Reading: Be careful when selecting your reading. Some readings names are very similar, for example Vayeira from the book of Genesis andva eira from Exodus. You can also click the Calendar button, navigate to the year, month and day of your reading, click the date, then click Open reading. The reading you chose will be shown selected in the reading list. F After you have selected your reading, click Select reading. Confirm your selection on the window that appears. TropeTrainer software s Navigator window will open. F To open your reading for the first time, click the Open new reading button. The Open reading window is displayed, with your single reading already selected. From the top line: be sure the proper year is still selected. Make sure to leave Diaspora selected. Your synagogue reads a third of each Torah portion in each year. Check the Use triennial Torah cycle checkbox and set the correct cycle year. The correct cycle is in your activation . (Triennial: X (Checked), Cycle ) There might be more than one choice of readings in the Torah Options Maftir options boxes, a Haftarah Options boxes. The normal selections are shown below. If you have any questions about this, ask your instructor which selection you should use: Torah Options: Shabbat Triennial year x Maftir options: Shabbat Triennial year x Haftarah Options: Haftarah After you have made these selections: F To open your Torah portion, click Open Torah Portion. F To open your haftarah, click Open Haftarah. 4

5 Using TropeTrainer software--just the basics Complete instructions for using TropeTrainer software can be seen by clicking the Help button on any of the major windows of the software. Here are the basics: When TropeTrainer software starts, its Navigator window opens. You can choose from the last eight readings or tutorials you have recently opened. F To open a reading or tutorial from the Navigator list, doubleclick the list item for the reading, or single-click the line and click the Open button to the right of the list. You can get back to the Navigator window at any time by clicking the Home button at the top-right of the toolbar on the software s main window. Opening readings The main TropeTrainer software window is where you will do most of your work. Ashkenazic - N.Schwartz F To open a reading, click the Open button on the top menu bar of the main window. Click Open reading from the popup menu that is displayed. The first time a Torah or Haftarah reading is opened, you must adjust the melody to match what is used in your synagogue. You have to open a Torah reading to set Torah melody; open a Haftarah to set Haftarah melody. Ask your bar/bat instructor which settings you should use: Torah Melody: Ashkenazic - N.Schwartz Haftarah Melody: Ashkenazic - N.Schwartz Other Melody: Accent: U.S. Sephardi Voice:Child Pitch: Speed: F To play the reading, click the green Play button, which will play from the grey cursor highlighting a word until the end of the reading. F To stop the playing, click the red Stop button. F To adjust the speed or voice volume level, click the + or - buttons on either side of the Speed or Voice level controls, or click on the grey or green bars themselves to jump to a setting. F To print a reading or the musical score for the reading, click the Print button. Opening tutorials F To open a tutorial, click the Open button on the top menu bar of the main window. Click Open tutorial from the popup menu that is displayed. Select the type of tutorial you want to study, e.g. Torah or Haftarah, and then from the list displayed in the bottom box of the tutorial selector choose the specific tutorial you will study. Exporting readings to itunes itunes exports are for your personal use. Each copy of the software comes with three trial export sessions. F To export a reading to itunes, open the reading you want. Make sure only the verses you want exported are displayed. Set the desired melody, voice, pitch and speed. Click the red itunes Export button.
