7 Introduction 1 Introduction 1.1 General The Event Recorder Maintenance Tool (ERMT) (PN N ) runs under Windows 95/98 (see Section 1.2), communicates via a serial cable with the Event Recorder (N ), and allows the operator to perform the following functions: View current real-time data, refreshed every second View logged (filtered) data, refreshed every second View variables and select which are to be logged to SRAM View variables and select which are used to trigger the FRA Stale Data timeout indication View non-volatile configuration information and modify parameters View and reset the Event Recorder s Real Time Clock date and time Transfer logged data serially from the Flash memory to the PC for viewing and printing with the Playback software Transfer logged data serially from SRAM to the PC for viewing with the Playback software Erase the Flash memory and the SRAM and format them for data logging Load new Executive software into the Event Recorder View the serial communication link status information between the Event Recorder and CSS, SES cab systems, and the DAU View and save to file - ASES subsystem software version numbers The ERMT communicates with the Event Recorder through a serial port on the PC connected to the Diagnostics Port located on the front panel of the Event Recorder or on the outside of the ASES enclosure. The ERMT provides a single window to access all Event Recorder functions. Five separate tabular screens used for various Maintenance Tool functions are accessed from this window. 1.2 System Requirements The system requirements for the Maintenance Tool are as follows: PC compatible computer running Windows 95/98 (Windows 98 preferred) A minimum of 32 MB of RAM (64 MB or more is preferred) SM 8845D, Rev. 1, January

11 2 Installation The Maintenance Tool is supplied on 3-½ inch discs and is installed using the Windows Run function. 1. Insert Disc 1 into the 3-½ inch drive (typically Drive A). Installation 2. Select the Start button in the lower left-hand corner of the desktop and then select Run from the popup menu. In the Open window type X:setup.exe, where X is the letter designation of the 3-½ inch drive containing Disc 1 (typically Drive A). 3. Follow the step-by-step instructions on the screen to load the Maintenance Tool software. The installation program will install a shortcut to the desktop for the Maintenance Tool which can be used to invoke the program. SM 8845D, Rev. 1, January

13 3 Operation Operation The ERMT provides single window access to all Event Recorder functions using five operatorselectable tabs located at the top of the window. The tabs invoke the display screens which are used to view Event Recorder data, view and modify the configuration, and transfer data from the Event Recorder (Figure 3-1). The five tabs are: Real Time Data (RTD) Logged Data (LD) Configuration System Versions VERTICAL SCROLL BAR SELECTABLE TABS FOR VIEWING DATA AND MODIFYING THE EVENT RECORDER SYSTEM REAL-TIME OR LOGGED VALUES PARAMETER NAMES SERIAL PORT SELECTION RECORDER STATUS RECORDER TIME & DATE Figure Real Time Data Tab (Same as the Logged Data Tab) The display screen format for the RTD and the LD tabs is identical except for the column heading over the data. The RTD tab is the default tab, (i.e., the RTD tab is automatically displayed when the Maintenance Tool is first opened). The data displayed in the RTD and LD tabs is updated once every second. 14 Operation A detailed description of these five tabs is presented in Sections 3.1 (Real Time Data Tab), 3.2 (Logged Data Tab), 3.3 (Configuration Tab), 3.4 (System Tab), and 3.5 (Versions Tab). The area at the bottom of the window is constant and does not change with the selection of the different tabs. The information displayed at the bottom of the window includes the Event Recorder Port, the Recorder Status, and the Event Recorder Time. The Recorder Status and Time information are constantly refreshed as the information changes. The Event Recorder Port drop down box, located at the bottom of the Maintenance Tool window, allows the user to select the serial port that the PC will use to communicate with the Event Recorder. The selectable ports are COM1, COM2, COM3, and COM4. The Recorder Status area will indicate the status of the Event Recorder. If there is a problem with the recorder an error message will appear identifying the problem. Five possible self-explanatory error indications may be shown in the Recorder Status area: Error Indication Corrective Action Flash ERROR Ensure that the Flash card is installed and properly seated in the card reader. Replace the Flash card. Flash Write Protect Check the Flash card and remove write protection. Replace the Flash card. Clock Battery Error Replace Real Time Clock battery. Serial EE Error Check/replace the serial EEPROM, ensure the MRU board is seated in the rack properly. FRA Data Not Changing Ensure all AESE equipment is operational and connected properly. If there are no problems with the Event Recorder, the status will show Online indicating that the Event Recorder is functioning properly. If the Event Recorder is not operational or is not communicating with the Maintenance Tool, the status will display Offline. In this case, ensure that the Event Recorder is up and running, and that the Event Recorder is properly connected to the PC. The Event Recorder Time displays the date and time of the internal Event Recorder clock unless the Event Recorder is not functioning. In this case the date and time will not be displayed and the word Offline will appear in the Recorder Status Area. In addition to the Event Recorder information, there are About and Exit buttons at the bottom of the window. Selecting the About button will display information on the Maintenance Tool software including the version and serial number. Selecting the Exit button will close the Maintenance Tool. 3-2 SM 8845D, Rev. 1, January 2005

15 3.1 Real Time Data Tab Operation Selecting the RTD tab allows the user to monitor the actual ASES data that the Event Recorder processes in real time. The vertical scroll bar, located to the right of the Tab Display Area (see Figure 3-1), allows the user to view all of the Event Recorder s real time parameters, by selecting the scroll bar, holding the left mouse button down, and moving the mouse in the appropriate direction. The real time data is the same data that is displayed by the LD tab except that some of the data displayed on the LD tab is filtered by the Event Recorder. The display area is updated once per second. 3.2 Logged Data Tab Selecting the Logged Data (LD) tab (Figure 3-1) allows the user to monitor the actual data that the Event Recorder is recording in real time. Selecting the scroll bar, located to the right of the Data Display Area, allows the user to view all of the Event Recorder s logged parameters by selecting the scroll bar, holding the left mouse button down, and moving the mouse in the appropriate direction. The data displayed in the LD tab is the same as the data that is actually recorded on the event record s Flash memory and to the SRAM. The display area is updated once per second. 3.3 Configuration Tab The Configuration tab (Figure 3-2) allows the user to: modify some of the Event Recorder s analog data recording rates (filters) set default recording values for the vehicle wheel size and the Vehicle ID determine which of the Event Recorder parameters are stored in SRAM set the list of recording parameters that the recorder uses to determine if any recorded item(s) have changed in the last 24 hours set the Event Recorder time [real time clock (RTC)]. All of the data presented on the Configuration tab is stored by the Event Recorder in serial EEPROM Setting FRA Data and Log in SRAM Parameters The FRA data column of the Parameter Display Area allows the user to establish which of the recorded values will be used to determine the Event Recorder s no data changed in the last 24 hours status. The Yes or No status of each parameter indicates whether or not it is being used for this determination. If none of the items selected in this column has changed in the last 24 hours, the Event Recorder will set a status indicating that none of the Event Record parameters has changed in the last 24 hours. In this case, the operator should ensure that all of the Event Recorder s serial links are operating properly. The Log in SRAM column allows the user to determine which specific parameters are to be recorded in SRAM. The Yes or No status of each parameter indicates whether or not it is being recorded in SRAM. 16 Operation VIEW CONFIGURATION SCREEN FRA STALE DATA TIMEOUT VARIABLE LOG VARIABLE IN SRAM CHANGE EVENT RECORDER TIME/DATE CONFIGURATION VALUES Figure Configuration Tab The status (Yes or No) of any of these items (FRA and Log in SRAM) can be changed by selecting the Yes or No status of the specific parameter. When selected, the status will change from one status to the other. Multiple items can be selected by holding the left mouse button and dragging the cursor over the desired items. The parameters will be shaded in gray and when the left mouse button is released the status of all of the parameters will change to Yes or No. Note Where the status of the selected parameters is mixed (both Yes and No), the user must check to ensure that the modified status is correct. It may be necessary to select the range of parameters again to change the status to the desired value. Once the user has set the appropriate parameters to the desired values, the user must select the Update Settings button with the left mouse button, and enter the appropriate password (Section 3.3.3). This action writes the Event Recorder s parameters to EEPROM. If the Update Settings button is not pressed, none of the changes in status will be stored. 3-4 SM 8845D, Rev. 1, January 2005

17 Operation Setting Configuration Parameters In addition to the FRA Data and Log in SRAM inputs, the Configuration tab of the Maintenance Tool allows the user to: set the Event Recorder s seven configurable set-up parameters set filter values (sensitivity) for the Event Recorder s analog inputs The filter values for these parameters are entered by selecting the parameter data box and then typing in the appropriate filter value, or by using the Up-Down arrows to the right of each box to increment/decrement the value as appropriate. Each sensitivity value is used to determine the amount each analog value must change before the value is actually recorded by the Event Recorder. The seven (7) user configurable Event Recorder set up parameters are: Vehicle ID Wheel Diameter (Inches) Main Reservoir Pressure Sensitivity (psi) Speed Log Sensitivity (mph) Brake Pipe Sensitivity (psi) Brake Cylinder Pressure Sensitivity (psi) Propulsion Current Sensitivity (amps) Note The sensitivity values indicate the amount a variable must change before the Event Recorder records it. For example, setting the Main Reservoir Pressure Sensitivity to 2, means that the Main Reservoir Pressure must change by more than 2 psi before the event is recorded. The lower the sensitivity setting the more data that will be recorded; the higher the sensitivity the less data that will be recorded. Note When all of desired values for the specific configurable parameters have been inserted in the box(es), the user must select the Update Settings button to write the new configuration values to the Event Recorder EEPROM. 18 Operation Vehicle ID The Vehicle ID box allows the user to enter the vehicle s unique ID number. This value must be a numeric integer, i.e., no decimals are allowed. Note The Event Recorder receives the Vehicle ID number from the maintenance tool and/or from the SES system. If the Event Recorder receives a valid Vehicle ID from the SES, the SES value will overwrite the value entered by the maintenance tool to the FRA event log Wheel Diameter (Inches) The Wheel Diameter box allows the user to enter the wheel diameter of the vehicle. The range of acceptable values is from 0.0 to and is accurate to one tenth of an inch (e.g., 32.4 inches). Note The Event Recorder determines the wheel diameter in one of three ways. 1. If the wheel diameter, as entered by the Maintenance Tool, is set to 0.0, the Event Recorder will use the SES wheel diameter value. If the SES wheel diameter value is not available, then the Event Recorder will use a default wheel diameter value that is based on the vehicle s hard-wired discrete inputs. 2. If the wheel diameter, as entered by the Maintenance Tool, is not 0.0, and the SES wheel diameter is not available, the Event Recorder will use the wheel diameter value that has been entered by the Maintenance Tool. 3. If the SES wheel diameter value is available, the Event Recorder will always use the SES value for the wheel diameter regardless of the value entered with the maintenance tool Main Reservoir Pressure Sensitivity (psi) The Main Reservoir Pressure Sensitivity box allows the user to modify the main reservoir pressure logging sensitivity. The range of acceptable values is from 0 to 100. The recommended sensitivity value is Speed Log Sensitivity (mph) The Speed Log Sensitivity box allows the user to modify the speed log sensitivity. The range of acceptable values is from 0 to 100. The recommended sensitivity value is SM 8845D, Rev. 1, January 2005

19 Operation Brake Pipe Sensitivity (psi) The Brake Pipe Sensitivity box allows the user to modify the sensitivity of the brake pipe pressure. The range of acceptable values is from 1 to 100. The recommended sensitivity value is Brake Cylinder Pressure Sensitivity (psi) The Brake Cylinder Pressure Sensitivity box allows the user to modify brake cylinder pressure log sensitivity. The range of acceptable values is from 1 to 100. The recommended sensitivity value is Propulsion Current Sensitivity (amps) The Propulsion Current Sensitivity box allows the user to modify propulsion current sensitivity. The range of acceptable values is from 25 to The recommended sensitivity value is Update Settings The Update Settings button located on the Configuration tab allows the user to write the Event Recorder s configuration parameters to serial EEPROM. The user must first set the desired values for all of the Configuration parameters before selecting the Update Settings button. When the Update Setting button is selected, the Event Recorder Password dialog box will open. To update the Event Recorder configuration items, the user must enter the appropriate Event Recorder password and select OK. In this case the Setting Updated dialog box will appear indicating that the Event Recorder configuration items have been successfully updated. Select OK to acknowledge that the configuration items have been successfully updated. Note The Event Recorder s Serial EEPROM will not be written with the new configuration values until a correct password has been entered in the Change Password dialog box. Note The factory default password is frarecorder Set Time The Set Time button located on the Configuration tab allows the user to update the Event Recorder s Real Time Clock (RTC). When the Set Time button is selected, the Set Time dialog box opens. The current month, day, year, hours, minutes, and seconds will appear in the appropriate input box. These values are the default values based on the PC s RTC. The user may change the default values by selecting the appropriate arrow next to each input box, or by entering a value directly over the default value. Once the desired clock value is entered, select the OK button to update the Event Recorder s RTC. SM 8845D, Rev. 1, January

21 Operation CAUTION Retrieving data and updating the executive software will temporarily disable the Event Recorder s recording capability. The System tab contains an Event Recorder Communication Status area as well as five system level control buttons. The system level control buttons are: ASES SRAM Format Change Load The Event Recorder Communication Status area on the System tab (Figure 3-3) displays the Event Recorder s communication status for all of the ASES subsystems, including the CSS, SES, and DAU. For each subsystem, the Event Recorder Communication Status area displays: the total messages received (# Msgs) the number of error free messages (# ACK) received the number of message received that contained errors (# NAK) in real time ASES Button - Retrieving Data from Flash Memory The Event Recorder can retrieve logged data from the Event Recorder s Flash memory. This is done by selecting the ASES button located on the System tab. When the ASES button is selected, the Retrieve ASES Data from Event Recorder dialog box will appear (Figure 3-4). This dialog box allows the user to upload all of the data recorded on the Flash memory, or upload a portion of the data recorded on the card, based on the recorder s time stamping of data. When the dialog box first appears the total time range of all data recorded on the card will be displayed (Figure 3-4). There are two options for retrieving ASES data from the Event Recorder: retrieve All Data and retrieve Data in the Time Range All Data All of the data recorded on the Flash memory can be uploaded by selecting the All Data option button. This option is available by default. When the All Data option is selected, the upload process begins when the OK button, located at the bottom of the Retrieve Data dialog box, is selected. The system will prompt the user for a file name for the data that will be up loaded. Enter the appropriate file name and then select the Save button to continue with the data upload process. The Serial Download Warning message box will appear, select YES to continue with the upload. The Upload Data from Event Recorder message box will appear. When the data upload completes, the Data Saved message box will be displayed. Select the OK button on the message box, to complete the upload process. Note All of the uploaded files are saved using a.pbr extension. This is the default file naming convention. All uploaded files will automatically be saved with this extension Data in the Time Range The System tab allows the user to retrieve data from the Flash memory that was recorded at a specific date and time. This option is available when the Data in the Time Range option on the Retrieve Data dialog box is selected. When the Data in the Time Range option box is selected, the maintenance tool will begin to display Event Recorder timestamps in the Time Range display area of the dialog box (Figure 3-4). A single timestamp displayed in this area - represents approximately 15 minutes of recorded data. It may take several minutes to display all of the timestamps in the Time Range display area. The hourglass icon (busy) will be displayed while the Time Range display area is being updated. When the Time Range display area is updated, the time range in which data is to be uploaded can be selected by holding the left mouse button down while sweeping over the desired time range(s). 25 Operation Note All of the uploaded files are saved using a.pbr extension. This is the default file naming convention. All uploaded files will automatically be saved with this extension Format Button - Format and Erase Flash Memory and SRAM The System tab allows the user to format the Flash memory and the SRAM. The Flash memory and SRAM are formatted simultaneously. The Flash memory and SRAM are formatted by selecting the Format button located on the System tab. When the Format button is selected, the Event Recorder Password dialog box will be displayed. To format the Flash memory and SRAM, enter the appropriate Event Recorder password and select the OK button. The Event Recorder Time display will show Offline and the PC Card LED located on the Event Recorder front panel will flash (rapidly), while the Flash memory is being formatted. When the Flash memory/sram formatting is complete, the Event Recorder Time will display the current date and time, based on the Event Recorders real time clock. Note Formatting the Flash memory and the SRAM will erase all of the data recorded on the Flash memory and SRAM. Care must be taken to ensure that all data recorded on the Flash memory/sram is saved prior to formatting Change Button - Change Password Selecting the CHANGE button will allow the user to change the Event Recorder password. The password is used to verify that any changes made with the Maintenance Tool to the configuration parameters are made by a qualified operator. The system will prompt the user to enter the old (current) password, enter a new password, and verify the new password by retyping it into the system (Figure 3-6). 26 Operation Load Button - Updating the Executive Software Selecting the LOAD button will start the process of updating the Event Recorder Executive software. The system will prompt the user to select the Event Recorder s Executive (Figure 3-7). Select the proper disc drive and file and select the Open button. (The file name of the Event Recorder Executive is Asesrcd.abs.) Figure Prompt for Selection of Setup Software A prompt will appear asking the user to Please press the Reset button on the Event Recorder (Figure 3-8). Press the Reset button on the front panel of the Recorder. When the Reset button is pushed, the Reset LED will momentarily flash. Figure Press the Restart Prompt CAUTION The Event Recorder Flash memory and SRAM will be automatically formatted when a new Event Recorder Executive is installed. Care must be taken to ensure that any vital data on the Flash memory and SRAM is saved prior to installing the new Executive software SM 8845D, Rev. 1, January 2005

27 Operation Note The Executive software upgrade is provided on a 3-½ inch disc. Prior to starting the upgrading process, the disc must be inserted into the computer s 3-½ inch drive (typically Drive A). The system will begin to erase the current version of the Executive software; a prompt will appear on the screen that alerts the user that the Flash memory is being erased (Figure 3-9). Erasing the Flash memory may take several seconds. At this point the user can cancel the process. However, this is not recommended because the Event Recorder Executive has been removed from memory. When the Flash memory has been erased, the system will automatically start to load the new version of the Event Recorder Executive and will notify the user with the prompt shown in Figure This process may take several minutes. 28 Operation Note During loading of the software, the LED s on the front of the Recorder panel will act as follows: the DAU Link LED will flash, the Vpp On LED will be on, and the On Line LED will be off. Just as the software upload completes, the Vpp On LED will extinguish and then come back on. When the new Executive has been installed, the system will notify the user of the successful update of the software with the prompt shown in Figure The user should select the OK button to acknowledge the prompt. The recorder status at the bottom at the window should be OK and the time shown should be current. The user must also verify that the LED s on the front of the Recorder have returned to normal status including: PC Card LED is on On Line LED is on Vpp On LED is on Note The Maintenance Tool MUST be restarted after loading the new software. 29 3.5 Versions Tab Operation The Versions tab (Figure 3-12) allows the user to: Display the software version numbers of all the ASES software components currently active in the ASES system. Save to file all of the ASES software version numbers. The Versions tab displays all of the ASES software version numbers for each of the following ASES subsystems. Event Recorder CSS SES ASES Router if available. VIEW VERSION SCREEN SAVE VERSION NUMBER TO FILE VERSION NUMBER DISPLAY AREA MAINTENANCE TOOL VERSION # CURRENT VEHICLE ID Figure Versions Tab The software version numbers for the DAU and REU are only displayed if the data is available. The current Vehicle ID is displayed in the bottom left corner of the Versions tab. 30 Operation When the Save to File button is selected the Save As dialog box appears (Figure 3-13). The default directory for storing the software version number(s) file is ASESdiag. The default file name for saving the version numbers to file consists of the Vehicle ID and the current date. When the software version numbers has been saved to a file, the system will notify the user that the file was properly save with the prompt shown in Figure The user should select the OK button to acknowledge the prompt.
