To upgrade your pinpad using this method, you must have CRE/RPE version or later installed. 1 P a g e
2 Performing Firmware Update To perform the firmware update you must first determine the type of upgrade that can be performed (simple or intricate) and then we must determine which update files are required. After running the update(s), we must then determine that the files have been installed correctly. Please see below for the steps required to upgrade the pinpad to the latest version. Determining the Type of upgrade to be Performed (Intricate or Simple) Determining Which Updates will be Required Performing an Intricate Firmware Update o o o Entering the Configuration Menu Enabling the Firmware Update Download on the PinPad and Beginning the Download through CRE/RPE Getting Ready to Take Transactions Performing Simple Firmware Update Determining all of the Correct Files Have Been Installed Please do the Following 2 P a g e
3 Determining the Type of upgrade to be Performed (Intricate or Simple) Before any upgrade is done we must first determine what type of upgrade is required. 1. Navigate to the folder: C:\Program Files\CRE.NET - (32 bit OS) C:\Program Files (x86)\cre.net - (64 bit OS) 2. Open the Pinpad.log file in notepad and then scroll to the bottom. Note: You may need to right-click the Pinpad.log file and select Open With..., you will want to select Notepad. Note: If the Pinpad.log file is blank: Close the log file then open CRE/RPE. Verify that the pinpad is correctly configured in the setup screen, login to the invoice screen, and perform a test transaction. Then try opening the file again. The last entry in that file will tell us the latest version information of the pinpad. a. If the last line of code contains the following: INFO 03/30/ :42:45 APP=2.2.1WOS=Mx0004US/RFS00017/svcpak PACKAGES=SC-RFCR ; SC-SIGCAP ; SC-SIGNAL-RND ; SC-USB- DISC-1.7; SC-WRENCH-1.00GUIMGR=2.26UNITID= / MODEL=MX850CLOCK= SECUREPACKETS=AES128 Note: The highlighted sections must match the information in your Pinpad.log file (as these indicate information for the correct type of update). A Simple Firmware Update may need to be performed. Note: If the above highlighted section of code is missing from your file (SC-RFCR ; SC- SIGCAP ; SC-SIGNAL-RND ; SC-USB-DISC-1.7; SC-WRENCH-1.00) then please refer to Option b. on the next page, as an intricate firmware update is needed. b. If the last line of code contains information similar to the following: INFO 03/30/ :15:45 APP=2.2.1WOS=Mx0004US/RFS00016/svcpak GUIMGR=2.26UNITID= / MODEL=MX850CLOCK= An Intricate Firmware Update may need to be performed. Note: If the Simple Firmware Update fails, then an Intricate Firmware Update may also be needed. 3 P a g e
4 Determining Which Updates will be Required To determine which updates the pinpad requires we must open the pinpad.log file again, which will tell us the versions that the pinpad is currently running. 1. Navigate to the folder: C:\Program Files\CRE.NET - (32 bit OS) C:\Program Files (x86)\cre.net - (64 bit OS) 2. Open the Pinpad.log file in notepad and then scroll to the bottom. Note: You may need to right-click the Pinpad.log file and select Open With..., you will want to select Notepad. Note: If the Pinpad.log file is blank: Close the log file then open CRE/RPE. Verify that the pinpad is correctly configured in the setup screen, login to the invoice screen, and perform a test transaction. Then try opening the file again. At the bottom of that file you will be looking for the following line of code: INFO 03/30/ :42:45 APP=2.2.1WOS=Mx0004US/RFS00017/svcpak PACKAGES=SC-RFCR ; SC-SIGCAP ; SC-SIGNAL-RND ; SC-USB- DISC-1.7; SC-WRENCH-1.00GUIMGR=2.26UNITID= / MODEL=MX850CLOCK= SECUREPACKETS=AES128 Note: The highlighted sections must match the information in your Pinpad.log file (as these indicate the correct versions of firmware updates are installed). In the above example the information that is highlighted in yellow is what we need to find... a. If RFS00016 is listed in your file then we need to start at Step 1, and continue through Step 5 in the diagram below. b. If RFS00017 or RFS00018 is listed in your file then we need to start at Step 3, and then perform Step 4 through Step 5 in the diagram below. 4 P a g e

6 Performing an Intricate Firmware Update To perform the intricate firmware update you must enter the configuration menu on the PinPad and then enable the download to take place. We must then open the software and then start the download. Please see below for the steps required to upgrade the pinpad to the latest version. 7 Entering the Configuration Menu 1. When you turn on the MX800 Series Pinpad you will see either the FORMAGENT USB (pictured top left) or the pcamerica Logo s (pictured bottom left) this is where we can begin to access the configuration menu. 2. Using a narrow tool such as a paperclip press the button in the hole to reset the device, it may take a minute or so. 7 P a g e
8 3. After some time with the device configuring you should see a screen (pictured left) asking for a password. Default password: Note: If the above password does not work then you can also try: This will display the System Mode, which is where all the settings for the MX800 Series PinPad are checked. 8 P a g e
9 Enabling the Firmware Update Download on the PinPad and Beginning the Download through CRE/RPE 1. At the System Mode screen select FILE TRANSFER. 2. At the File Transfer screen select DOWNLOAD. 9 P a g e
10 3. While on the Configure Direct Download screen select the Port that the PinPad is connected to (e.g. USB). 4. Under Download Type?: If either the OS (Step 1*) or PCA (Step 4 & 5*) update is being performed select Full. If either the SP (Step 2*) or SP (Step 3*) update is being performed select Partial. * From the Grid on Page Select GO! To begin the file transfer. 6. You will then see Waiting for Server on the PinPad screen. 10 P a g e
11 7. Open CRE/RPE and select Manager. Provide the requested credentials and then follow these steps. 8. Select Setup and then select Setup Screen. 9. Select the Hardware tab and then select Page After setting up your PinPad select Upgrade PinPad. Note: If after setting up the PinPad, the Upgrade PinPad button doesn t appear then you must select Update and then re-enter the setup screen. 11 P a g e
12 11. You should automatically be brought to the Alt. Software Update tab, if not then select it. 12. Using the information from the Grid on Page 6 of this document, please determine which Type/Version to install first (either OS/RFS017 or SP/17.1.B). 13. Select Perform to begin the upgrade. Note: Steps 12 and 13 will need to be repeated for each option that is to be installed. 14. During each installation the screen of the PinPad will display the progress of the download. 12 P a g e
13 15. After Step 1 through Step 3 of the Grid on page 6 have been installed the pinpad will automatically restart. 16. After Step 4 (PCA 1.3) of the Grid on page 6 has been installed a manual restart will be required. For steps to manually restart the pinpad please see: Getting Ready to Take Transactions. In order to install Step 5 (PCA 1.4) of the Grid on page 6 we must then get the pinpad back to the configuration menu, please see: Entering the Configuration Menu. 17. After Step 5 (PCA 1.4) of the Grid on page 6 have been installed a manual restart will be required. For steps to manually restart the pinpad please see: Getting Ready to Take Transactions. 18. CRE/RPE will display a message stating that the upgrade is complete and the device is waiting for a restart. Select OK. 19. Select Done on the PinPad. 13 P a g e
14 20. After the device has restarted (See: Getting Ready to Take Transactions) you will see a message stating that the upgrade is completed. 21. Select OK. 14 P a g e
15 Getting Ready to Take Transactions The following steps will need to be done after Step 4 and Step 5 of the Grid on page At the System Mode screen select FILE MANAGER. If no changes have been made select RUN APPLICATION, which will get you back to the screen where the software can be started and transactions can be made. If changes have been made you can select RESTART, which will restart the device and will make it where the software can be started and transactions can be made. After the device resets you will now see either the FORMAGENT screen or the PCA logo as well with the CRE/RPE logos. Please Login and perform a test transaction to verify that it is working correctly. 15 P a g e
16 Performing Simple Firmware Update To perform the simple firmware update, open CRE/RPE and select Manager. Provide the requested credentials and then follow these steps. 1. Select Setup and then select Setup Screen. 2. Select the Hardware tab and then select Page After setting up your PinPad select Upgrade PinPad. Note: If after setting up the PinPad, the Upgrade PinPad button doesn t appear then you must select Update and then re-enter the setup screen. 16 P a g e
17 4. Select the Software Update tab. 5. Select the Upgrade? checkbox starting from the oldest version to the newest version under the New Version column. 6. Select Perform to begin the upgrade. Note: This process (steps 5-6) will need to be repeated for each version that is installed, starting from the oldest version working to the newest. 7. On the screen of the PinPad you will see a message stating that the download has commenced. 17 P a g e
18 8. After the download has completed you will see a window stating that the download has completed and then the device will restart and then return to the form agent screen. 9. You will then receive a message on the computer confirming that it has completed. 10. Select OK. This process will need to be repeated for each version until the device is running version 1.4 (Step 5). 18 P a g e
19 Determining all of the Correct Files Have Been Installed Please do the Following: 1. Navigate to the folder: C:\Program Files\CRE.NET - (32 bit OS) C:\Program Files (x86)\cre.net - (64 bit OS) 2. Open the Pinpad.log file in notepad and then scroll to the bottom. Note: You may need to right-click the Pinpad.log file and select Open With..., you will want to select Notepad. Note: To verify that the last entry in the log is current: Close the log file then open CRE/RPE. Verify that the pinpad is correctly configured in the setup screen, login to the invoice screen, and perform a test transaction. Then try opening the file again. At the bottom of that file (last entry) you will be looking for the following line of code, we will need to make sure that the highlighted text matches what is in your Pinpad.log file: INFO 03/30/ :42:45 APP=2.2.1WOS=Mx0004US/RFS00017 (or RFS00018)/svcpak PACKAGES=SC-RFCR ; SC-SIGCAP ; SC-SIGNAL-RND ; SC-USB-DISC-1.7; SC-WRENCH-1.00GUIMGR=2.26UNITID= / MODEL=MX850CLOCK= SECUREPACKETS=AES P a g e
