1 Hardware Announcement August 23, 2000 IBM 3589 Ultrium Tape Cartridges Support Linear Tape-Open Technology Overview The Ultrium tape format is the implementation of the LTO technology that is optimized for high capacity and performance with exceptional reliability in either a stand-alone or an automated environment. It uses a single-reel cartridge to maximize capacity. You may choose from three models of the 3589 Ultrium Tape Cartridges that use this LTO technology: 3589 Model GB Ultrium Tape Cartridges with Labeling Services 3589 Model GB Ultrium Tape Cartridges 3589 Model 004 Ultrium Cleaning Cartridges Ideally suited for backup, restore, and archive applications, the Ultrium tape format will establish a new benchmark for large volume backup and archive. Utrium products will meet the needs of the enterprise through single-server user on a roadmap, or migration path, that extends well into the next decade. 2 Description Optimized for high capacity benefits of the Ultrium Tape Cartridge include: Ultrium allows for 100 GB native capacity in a single compact cartridge. The cartridge is smaller than existing single-reel tape cartridges. Ultrium provides for data transfer rates of MB per second dependent on drive transfer rate and compression ratio. LTO-CM (Cartridge Memory) enhances functionality by providing a redundant file log as well as user defined information. Ultrium takes advantage of LTO technology s extensive testing, proven error correction, and data compression techniques. By specifying only those features needed for interchange of tape cartridges, the Ultrium implementation of the LTO specification retains flexibility. This flexibility allows for a substantial amount of implementation freedom with respect to performance characteristics, form factor, reliability, controllers, and interfaces while tape cartridges remain interchangeable among Ultrium tape drives. The servo format is expected to remain consistent throughout the life of the product line. This major benefit enables manufacturers to leverage investments. Compliance Testing by an independent organization promotes compliance to the specification. This shortens qualification cycles and simplifies future product planning for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Product Positioning IBM customers prefer labeling service when ordering IBM Ultrium tape solutions. The 3589 addresses all aspects of the customers requirements for 3589 data cartridge labeling specifications. Label Background Options: Both Color/Vibrant (#9022) and White (#9077) are available. VOLSER Color Choices: All ten background colors are available (#9003 to #9012).
