1 Importing from VSpace to Canvas Below are the directions for how to import content from VSpace to Canvas. You can only import content from the following VSpace tools: Resources Lessons Assignments Test Center Modules You will NOT be importing content directly from VSpace into your actual academic courses in Canvas. Instead, you will be creating a new course in Canvas for your imported material. This will allow you to look over and clean up the material in this in-between course, and you can then import it from there into your actual academic course once everything looks good. How to Import Click Settings in the upper right corner. Click Content Migration on the left. Note: If this is your first time using the tool, it will ask you to authenticate. Click the Authenticate button, and then click the Log in button.

2 Click the + New Migration Request button. The Sakai Course Migration box will pop up. This is where you will search for the VSpace course you want to import into Canvas. In the Find your site box, type the name of the VSpace course you want to import into Canvas, and then click the Search button. 1. A list of courses that contain the search term will be listed. Select the box to the left of the course you want to import into Canvas. 2. A list of the tools available to be imported from VSpace to Canvas is listed. Check the box to the left of the tools you want to import. 3. Click the Next button to start the importing. NOTE: If you are not able to see the Next button, hit Control and the minus sign on your keyboard to zoom out on the page. You may need to do this several times before you are able to see the button.

3 The Canvas Info box will pop up. 1. The Remote Course Name will be already populated. 2. In the Canvas Course Name box, type in a title for the new course that is being created. Again, this will NOT be your official course in Canvas, it will be an in-between course that is being created to hold your imported content. We recommend adding VSpace to the title of this course so that you will know this is the course you imported in from VSpace. A confirmation will pop up that your request was submitted. Click the Close button to close it. At the bottom of the page, you will see your request and its status.

4 In the above screenshot, you can see that my request is currently In Progress. Other status possibilities are In Queue if the system is currently busy processing other requests, and Complete when the request is finished. You will need to refresh your browser to see the status changes. In the above screenshot, you can see two completed migration requests. The green box means that everything imported perfectly, and there were no problems. The yellow box means that there are some warnings. To see the warnings, click the drop down located within the Completed box. Now click on the warnings text (16 Warnings) to open up the warnings list. You will have to scroll down the page to read the warnings. Here is an example of what the warnings could look like: As you can see, these are not nice friendly warnings. What I can see from the above is that these are all warning that have to do with the Resources tool (Resource Parser). If I look at the first item, it says Unable to retrieve. This means that it was unable to bring this resource over. The easiest thing to do is to compare your VSpace course to your new Canvas course to see what may be missing. If you chose to import from a tool in VSpace that is empty, you will get this error:

5 This simply means there wasn t anything there to import, so you can ignore Unable to parse warnings like this.
