NIFA Navigation Scoring Module

1 NIFA has placed a scoring module for members to use during Navigation Event practice. The module uses scoring logic as outlined in the current rule and is the same logic that will be used at the Regional and National SAFECONs. You can access the scoring module at: If you are not currently logged into the nifa.aero site, you will be directed to a login page as you see below: Login using your nifa.aero credentials and you should be directed to the main page, shown below:

2 From this page you can access your programmed routes, or routes other members have made available. Use the New Route link in the upper left corner to create a new route.

3 On this page you will define a new route. For this example, we ll use the 2016 National SAFECON Route A from KOSU. In the picture above, you ll see the Private option. Selecting this option will keep the route private in the sense that only the route creator will be able to view the route and submit files for scoring. Leaving this option unchecked will allow all NIFA members to view the route. Now you ll see we ve entered the Starting Airport, the Starting Reference Point, and the Turnpoint Radius. The Starting Reference Point is the point at which timing and scoring will begin. The Lat/Lon of the reference point must be included in Decimal Degrees (DD.dddddd) format, with South Latitudes and West Longitudes being a negative number. The Turnpoint Radius is the maximum distance from the turnpoint a contestant can fly without earning penalty points.

4 When the page initially loads there was only one turnpoint row shown. Use the Green button (with a white plus sign) in the upper left to add rows. For this example, we ll include 5 turnpoints. Here you can see all five of our turnpoints. Again, notice the Latitude/Longitude are in the Decimal Degrees format and South and West will be negative numbers. Click the Save Route button to save the route. You should be directed back to the home page shown below. Click on the button with the Cloud/Up Arrow next to the route that you would like to grade. This will bring you to the page below, where you can enter your planned data. Enter your own planned data and the form should look something like the one pictured below:

5 The last field on the form is for the GPX file downloaded from the Bad Elf unit. Familiarity with Bad Elf GPS Units is a must to use this application. Prior to flight, the data logging option on the Bad Elf unit must be enabled. The frequency for the data logging should be set to 1 plot per second, or 1 hz. Each navigation team s track must be in its own GPX file and must be uploaded independently. Click the Score button to process the data and compile your results.

6 The results page will include three panels; the first two panels are pictured above. The first panel will reflect the pilot data entered on the previous page. The second panel will provide scoring data. The scoring data is broken down by leg, with the totals at the bottom. In our example, the team had 55 total timing points, no turnpoint distance penalty, and no fuel penalty. The third panel, pictured below is a Google Maps view of the planned nav route (red) and the actual path flown (yellow).

7 NIFA Navigation Scoring Module The map can be manipulated as any other Google Map. Before leaving this page, you should copy whatever information you want to retain. These scores and results are not saved within the system. It is recommended to save the page as a PDF and retaining as needed. The Google Map will not be usable in the PDF, but can be viewed by opening the GPX file from the Bad Elf in Google Earth.
