Preface This chapter describes the purpose and content of this document, explains the SPECTRUM version control scheme, and identifies additional sources of information about SPECTRUM products. Purpose of This Document This Software Release Notice (SRN) accompanies each copy of the release package for version 5.0 rev 1 of the SPECTRUM Level I Developer s Tools. The SRN is intended to do the following: Alert the user about product enhancements or changes List hardware and software requirements for the current version Identify any operational anomalies corrected since the previous release Explain any remaining anomalies and offer solutions or workarounds wherever feasible Identify any updates or corrections to related documentation A new SRN will be issued and packaged with each subsequent release of this product. It is strongly recommended that you read the accompanying SRN each time you receive an updated version of the software so that you will be aware of any changes in the product or the associated documentation. This document does not contain installation instructions. To install any of the Level I toolkits, consult the latest version of the Installation Guide and any README file(s) and/or hardcopy instructions included with the distribution package E19 v
Version Control Version Control SPECTRUM s numbering scheme for version control consists of up to four numeric fields as well as an alphabetic descriptor as shown in the following diagram. 5.0 rev 1.00 Major Release Minor Release Descriptor Revision Build Major Release Minor Release Descriptor Revision Build Increments to the number in this field represent major changes in the product s design, functionality, or user interface. Major releases are planned several months in advance. Minor releases are scheduled product upgrades that provide new or enhanced features but do not represent functionality changes as significant as those involved in a major release. Minor releases occur one or more times per year. This field identifies the current version as either a revision to a major/minor release (rev) or a revision to a test release (alpha or beta). This field is incremented for subsequent revisions to a release and is reset to zero for each new major/minor release. This field is primarily used for internal tracking of individual builds under a particular revision and is not usually visible to the customer. Build numbers are encountered only in conjunction with alpha and beta test releases or special, limited distribution support releases. 10 Chapter 1 Overview What Is in This Chapter Chapter One provides a description of the SPECTRUM Level I Developer s Tools for 5.0 rev 1. This chapter also identifies new features, system requirements, and any operational constraints that pertain to the last major release (5.0 rev 0). Product Description The SPECTRUM Level I Developer s Tools are designed to allow OEM developers to integrate their products into SPECTRUM, and to allow developers at customer sites to customize SPECTRUM to suit the site s specific needs. Packaged as optionally-purchasable modules, the following Level I Developer s Tools are available: SPECTRUM Model Type Editor (MTE) -- The primary tool used to create and modify SPECTRUM model types. With the MTE, developers can customize existing model types to meet specific needs, or derive new model types, attributes, and extensions from previously defined ones. The MTE allows customer control over each model type attribute, beyond the limited access available with the basic SPECTRUM core product. The MTE also allows developers to import proprietary vendor MIBs. SPECTRUM Generic Information Block (GIB) Editor -- Provides the means for on-line creation and modification of SPECTRUM information views within the SpectroGRAPH User Interface. The GIB Editor allows customers to customize the data and graphs associated with information views. Links can be established between model or device information views and each instance with this editor E19 1-1
Product Description SPECTRUM Icon Information Block (IIB) Editor -- Allows the customer to create and modify icons within the SpectroGRAPH User Interface. The Icon Editor provides a graphic interface for editing icons representing new model types, derived model types, and the attributes of both. Editing features include browse, copy, and paste facilities. SPECTRUM Extensions Integration (SEI) Toolkit -- Intended for customers or VAR developers who wish to package and sell a SPECTRUM extension they have developed. This toolkit enables a developer to produce a complete, ready-to-install SPECTRUM extension. The toolkit includes tools and information for integrating a customer-developed extension with the SPECTRUM tape formats and the SPECTRUM Installation Script. Distribution tapes created using the SEI Toolkit utilities will be installed at a customer s site using the new graphical user interface Install utility. Tools are also provided to export models from the SPECTRUM database, icons from SpectroGRAPH, and protocols from SPECTRUM. Purchasers of the toolkit receive a unique Developer Identification Code to ensure that their SPECTRUM extensions can be integrated into any SPECTRUM site in the world. Cabletron encourages purchasers to become SPECTRUM Partners. We are committed to keeping the SPECTRUM Partners Program dynamically responsive to your needs, and we welcome new partners who can further extend the range and flexibility of solutions available through SPECTRUM. For more information and an application to become a SPECTRUM Partner, please contact SPECTRUM Partner Development ( spectrum_partners@ctron.com; phone: ; fax: ; www: Several categories of extensions are developed using Level I Developer s Tools: Simple model types and relations (those that involve only the addition of attributes) can be derived from existing ones by using tools such as the Model Type Editor (MTE). The process of adding new alerts, mapping alerts to events, and events to alarms (for simple model types or for complex ones) does not involve writing C++ code. The SPECTRUM Event Configuration Editor can be used to add or edit events, generate an alarm from an event, and delete events. New base icons can be created by simply creating a new information block. Views can be made to display new icons by modifying the Perspective Information Blocks (PIBs) associated with them. Also, simple views can be created by modifying a GIB information block. These extensions can be accomplished using the IIB Editor and the GIB Editor. Extensions developed using the Level I or Level II Developer s Tools can be packaged to distribution media for resale, and installed at a customer site using the standard SPECTRUM installation process. By using the SPECTRUM Extension Integration Toolkit, a VAR developer can build a Level I or Level II extension product that can be fully integrated into any SPECTRUM site. 12 New Feature Information for 5.0 Model Type Editor (MTE) New Feature Information for 5.0 This section discusses new features of SPECTRUM software and documentation. Model Type Editor (MTE) 1. Changes were made to the MTE interface to allow entry of attribute groups as a distinct entity within a model type. In other words, a new group is added instead of an attribute of type GROUP_ID. 2. The ISODE Mosy Mib Compiler is no longer used with the MTE. There is now a shared mib parser with the MTE and the SPMA RMON mib database importer. 3. Keying of attributes is now dynamic within the SpectroSERVER. The MEM_KEYED and DB_KEYED notions for Attributes have been removed. 4. MTE no longer enforces a max_length for DEFAULT or SHARED values. The max_length notion for Attributes has been removed. 5. Added database support for storage of multi-valued (list) Attributes: There is no longer a List flag on an Attribute descriptor. Identifying an Attribute as being list (supporting multiple values) is done through a new button next to the Type field. There is also a new dialog which allows entry/ maintenance of multi-valued Attributes. 6. Most of the above mentioned changes resulted in changes to the output produced by dbtool dump/dump_mt and to the output produced by reports. 7. In the Model Type View, under File, the Find Groups menu choice allows you to specify groups of attributes or character strings. Basic Extension Toolkit 1. Duplicate OID s are now allowed in the order in which they appear within alert maps. This allows the information to be displayed for each alert containing multiple instances of a single table attribute E19 1-3
Deprecation Notes SPECTRUM Extensions Integration (SEI) Toolkit SPECTRUM Extensions Integration (SEI) Toolkit To simplify and improve the overall operational process, changes to the PIB database are now controlled through a user-created default.p file in the SG-Tools/PIB directory. If you are developing a new management module by cloning an existing one via the mmbuild tool, mmbuild will automatically create the appropriate entries within the default.p file and propagate them to the PIB database. If you wish to selectively make immediate changes to your 5.0rev1 PIB database, you need to use the pibtool utility as follows: 1. Create a dafault.p file in SG-Tools/pib if one does not already exist. 2. Use a text editor to modify default.p as desired. 3. Navigate back to your top-level SPECTRUM directory and type:.sg-tools/pibtool If you are upgrading to 5.0rev1 from a previous version that permitted you to modify.pib files directly, and you wish to preserve these modifications, you will need to use a text editor to recreate these modifications in a default.p file before installing 5.0rev1. The installation will then propagate the changes to the new PIB database. Generic Information Block (GIB) Editor 1. The following changes have been made to represent the fields accurately: a. Attribute field names (Numeric Display, Unsigned Rates) have been changed. b. New non-attribute field names (Button, Launch a Script with Parameters and Instance ID Enumeration Portion) have been added. Deprecation Notes NOTE The IIB Editor (Product # ST-CSI1007 ) will be deprecated in the next major release after SPECTRUM 5.0. Level I Developer s Tools 1-4 Software Release Notice 5.0 Rev 1
Chapter 2 Corrected Anomalies What Is in This Chapter This chapter lists the known irregularities or anomalies that have been corrected for the last major release (5.0 rev 0) of the SPECTRUM Level I Developer s Tools. Corrections are listed under the toolkit in which the anomaly is associated. SPECTRUM Extensions Integration (SEI) Toolkit 1. Any pib: entries in the index file are now added to the PIB files during installation. Pib entries are now located in a.p file, and not in the index file. 2. Creating a new management module by the MTE, running mmbuild, and running mkmm to tar the file no longer results in error messages appearing. qabug dvbug insdk Model Type Editor (MTE) 1. The Add Base Model Type dialog box and the Find Model Type dialog box interpret the <Return> character similarly and function correctly. 2. With OPEN LOOK Window Manager, MTE windows appear appropriately and can be resized. sgu The MTE now uses the appropriate font style. mte E19 2-1

Chapter 3 Known Anomalies This chapter lists the known anomalies for Release 5.0 rev 1 of the SPECTRUM Level I Developer s Tools. The anomalies (and solutions or workarounds wherever feasible) are listed under the associated toolkit. Icon Information Block (IIB) Editor Problem 1: The word Filter appears over an image s path when Image is selected using the IIB Editor. After selecting a file under the file list, a box appears around the word Filter. The box cuts into the r in filter. Although the box resembles a button, it serves no function. Solution: This problem will be fixed in a future release. atbug Generic Information Block (GIB) Editor Problem 1: If you make changes to editable Management Module views, then cancel the changes, those changes remain until the view is closed and reopened. Solution: The cancel function instructs the GIB view not to write the changes out to the GIB file. These changes are not saved but are still seen in the view. The GIB Editor functions as designed. docs E19 3-1
Model Type Editor (MTE) Model Type Editor (MTE) Problem 1: The MTE import feature does not support the MODULE- IDENTITY macro in snmpv2 MIBs. All MIB OBJECT- IDENTIFIER objects which refer to that macro will have an incomplete value. Solution: This problem will be fixed in a future release Problem 2: Attributes of an unsupported type must be created manually. Attempts to use the MIB compiler causes MTE to report that the attribute type is unsupported and the attribute will not be created. Solution: Refer to Chapter 2 of the MTE Guide for more information. Problem 3: MIB object names with a length greater than 31 characters are now truncated to a length of 31 characters in MTE MIB import. When these truncated names duplicate a preexisting SPECTRUM Attribute name, they are discarded by the MTE MIB import facility. Solution: A warning message will be printed for each MIB object name which is discarded. Problem 4: On a Sun platform running Solaris 2.5.1, attempts to import a.e export file that is not a valid export file (created with either the MTE export command or dbtool export command), causes the Model Type Editor to crash, but without generating a core file. Solution: This problem will be fixed in a future release. Problem 5: On NT, entering default/shared Attribute values for Attributes of Type Integer exceeding the to range, shows a value which inherits the maximum legal value. Solution: Do not enter default/shared values for Integer-typed Attributes that are out of the range from to Known Anomalies Level I Developer s Tools 3-2 Software Release Notice 5.0 Rev 1
SPECTRUM Extensions Integration Toolkit SPECTRUM Extensions Integration Toolkit Problem 1: In cases where the quick install area resides on a remote file system and is accessed through an NFS mount, the Install.quick program may generate a series of chmod [filename] Not owner, chmod: WARNING: can t change [filename] and chown [filename] No permission match error messages. Solution: The messages may be ignored as they will not prevent the installation from succeeding. To prevent the messages and allow the chown/chmod operations, the host machine must be configured to accept su (superuser) ID permission for root. Do this by editing the file /etc/exports as described in the exports man page. Problem 2: mkdist command line option prod does not work correctly. When running mkdist with the command line option prod=ss on extension modules with only SG products, mkdist copies the module to the distribution medium when it should produce an error. When running mkdist with the command line option prod=sg on extension modules with only SS products, mkdist copies the module to the distribution medium when it should produce an error. Solution: This problem will be fixed in a future release. NOTE Tools in the SEI Toolkit are platform-dependent. For example, the Solaris version of the SEI Toolkit may only be used to create files which are to be installed on the Solaris platform. NOTE Ignore process error messages related to the vtape files that display during this install E19 Known Anomalies 3-3
