8 Preface Describes recommended prerequisites for Network Configuration Utilities users and this manual s conventions and organizational structure. Welcome to SPECTRUM Network Configuration Utilities. Network Configuration Utilities is a set of configuration applications specifically designed for network devices that implement the ctdownload MIB. Prerequisites for Users Network Configuration Utilities users should be familiar with the following: SPECTRUM Search Manager The device types you intend to configure with Network Configuration Utilities applications How this Guide Is Organized Section Introduction Downloading Firmware Modifying Community Strings MIB Objects Introduces Network Configuration Utilities device configuration tools. 10 Introduction Introduces Network Configuration Utilities device configuration tools. Network Configuration Utilities Network Configuration Utilities is a set of applications, accessible from SPECTRUM Search Manager, that enables you to perform the following device management tasks for devices that are modeled in SPECTRUM and implement the ctdownload MIB: Configure and execute TFTP firmware image downloads using the Firmware Download Tool. Modify community strings using the Modify Community Strings Tool. Firmware Download Tool The Firmware Download tool enables you to configure and execute TFTP firmware image file (.fls format) downloads to network devices that implement the ctdownload MIB. Caution: SPECTRUM Network Configuration Utilities supports online.fls file format downloads only. Attempting to perform online downloads to devices which only support offline.hex file format downloads could potentially render those devices non-functional, and/or result in serious network performance ramifications. Modify Community Strings Tool The Modify Community Strings tool enables you to modify community strings for network devices that support either the chassis (Rev , which supports global community strings) or ctchassis2 MIBs. Devices that support these MIBs contain up to three names, one for each of three privilege levels: read-only, read-write, and super-user. Network Configuration Utilities Page 10

11 Introduction Security: Configuration Privileges Security: Configuration Privileges To configure devices with Network Configuration Utilities applications, you must have the following SPECTRUM and device security privileges: A SPECTRUM user model with write privileges. See Security and User Maintenance for more information about SPECTRUM user privileges. Super User community name access to modify device community strings, and Read/Write community name access to download firmware. Getting Started This section describes how to install Network Configuration Utilities, and how to access the applications from SPECTRUM Search Manager. Installation SPECTRUM Network Configuration Utilities is an optional, separately purchasable SPECTRUM component, and is installed using the standard SPECTRUM installation program, Install. You can install the SpectroSERVER and SpectroGRAPH portions of Network Configuration Utilities on different machines, if necessary. See the SPECTRUM Installation Guide for more information. Network Configuration Utilities and Search Manager SPECTRUM Search Manager enables you to compile a list of the models for the devices you want to configure and provides access to Network Configuration Utilities applications. Search Manager Results Lists in a DSS Environment Devices modeled in a DSS (distributed SpectroSERVER) environment can have multiple entries in Search Manager search results lists (and also in Network Configuration Utilities results lists). Therefore, multiple Network Configuration Utilities Page 11

12 Introduction Getting Started instances of those devices will appear in the results lists, in the following circumstances: Devices modeled by different SpectroSERVERs will have different model handles, and as a result multiple instances of those devices will appear in the results lists. Devices having multiple IP addresses can be modeled by different IP addresses on different SpectroSERVERs, and as a result multiple instances of those devices will appear in the results lists. Redundant Network Configuration Utilities operations performed on devices in these circumstances may fail if the prior operations have not completed. For example, if you perform sequential firmware downloads on the same device, latter downloads may fail if the prior download has not completed before the second one starts, or if force reboot was specified and the device has not fully rebooted following the first download. Similarly, if you perform sequential community string changes on the same device, latter community string changes may fail because the prior operation changed the device s community string, and a major alarm will be generated indicating lost contact. To minimize the risk of such occurrences, make certain of the devices upon which you wish to perform Network Configuration Utilities operations. See the SPECTRUM Search Manager User s Guide for details on working with the Search Manager. Accessing Network Configuration Utilities Applications To access Network Configuration Utilities applications: 1 Open the Search Manager application and compile a models list. 14 Downloading Firmware Describes how to use the Network Configuration Utilities Firmware Download Tool to configure and execute TFTP firmware image downloads to devices. Firmware Download Overview Firmware is the software instruction set saved to Flash EEPROM in a managed (or an intelligent ) network device. It provides the device with the capacity to be managed through in-band console management or outof-band, SNMP-compliant management applications such as SPECTRUM. The firmware download procedure involves specifying download parameters (e.g., the name and source of the firmware image file and the device(s) to which the file is to be downloaded) and then starting the download via TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol). Note: SPECTRUM Network Configuration Utilities does not contain TFTP server software. You must install and configure a TFTP server in order to use the Firmware Download Tool. Several commercial, shareware, and freeware TFTP server software packages are available for Windows NT. Aprisma offers a free TFTP server for NT. For instructions on downloading and configuring the Aprisma TFTP server, point your Web browser to: TFTP server software is included with the standard Solaris distribution. 15 Downloading Firmware Configuring the Download Configuring the Download Caution: SPECTRUM Network Configuration Utilities supports online.fls file format downloads only. Attempting to perform online downloads to devices which only support offline.hex file format downloads could potentially render those devices non-functional, and/or result in serious network performance ramifications. Before You Start Before you start a download, make sure the models list compiled (or selected) in Search Manager and displayed in the Download Firmware window represents intelligent devices that support the firmware you intend to download. Devices of differing model types can be selected; however, you may need to start the download operation multiple times if the selected devices require different firmware images. To access the Firmware Download Tool: 1 Open the Search Manager application and compile a models list. 2 Select one or more models, and then choose Download Firmware from the Management menu. 16 Downloading Firmware Configuring the Download Note: If for any reason some or all of the device(s) in your list are invalid (e.g., devices not supported by the Firmware Download application, devices unable to be contacted, device models for which you do not have write access, etc.), an Invalid Models Window appears first. For more information about the Invalid Models Window, see Verifying the Operation/Exception Handling. Configuring and Starting the Download 1 In the Edit Information for Firmware Download Window, set the following parameters (or accept default settings) to configure the download: TFTP Server Address Gateway Address (default value is ), if necessary Image File Name Parallel Downloads (default value is 2) Force Reboot (default state is disabled), if necessary Community String to use instead of the default (default state is disabled), if necessary See Table 1 for more information about the Edit Information for Firmware Download Window and these parameters. 2 Click the OK button to dismiss the Edit Information for Firmware Download Window, save any changes made, and edit the Firmware Download models list. or, 3 Click the Cancel button to dismiss the Edit Information for Firmware Download Window, discard any changes made, and edit the Firmware Download models list. 17 Downloading Firmware Configuring the Download Performing Downloads to Selected Models To perform downloads to selected models: 1 Edit the Firmware Download models list by selecting device(s) for the download from the list of devices in the display panel. This list may be identical to the list compiled in Search Manager, or you can select a subset of devices. 2 Select Download Information from the Edit menu. 3 Follow the instructions in Configuring and Starting the Download. Edit Information for Firmware Download Window The Edit Information for Firmware Download Window provides a means of entering information required for a successful firmware download. It is invoked automatically when the Firmware Download application is started, or can be invoked from within the Firmware Download application by selecting Download Information from the Edit menu. Table 1: Edit Information for Firmware Download Window Fields & Buttons Field/Button Text Input Fields and Toggle Buttons TFTP Server Address Gateway Address Image File Name The IP address of the download server. This address must be specified for the download to succeed. The IP address for the first router on the network path between the TFTP server and the managed device that is required if Proxy ARP is disabled for the router. (Proxy ARP allows a router to forward ARP requests on behalf of a device connected to its attached segment.) The default value is The path for the firmware image file you want to download. You must specify a.fls file. You can specify either the image filename or the full path to the image filename, depending upon the configuration of the TFTP server. 18 Downloading Firmware Describing the Firmware Download Window Field/Button Parallel Downloads Force Reboot Community String to use instead of the default OK Cancel What s This? The number of devices to which firmware is simultaneously downloaded. This value must be greater than or equal to 1. The default value is 2. If enabled, the device reboots and loads the downloaded image from EEPROM to memory immediately after the download. If disabled, the device does not reboot, and the image remains in EEPROM until the device is rebooted. The default state is disabled. If enabled, a community string other than the default must be provided. If disabled, the default SPECTRUM community string(s) configured for each individual model(s) is/are used. The default state is disabled. When provided, this community string will be used for all models. Action Buttons Becomes active when you enter any information into the text fields or click any check boxes. Clicking the OK button dismisses the Edit Information for Firmware Download Window so you can edit the Firmware Download models list prior to executing the download, and saves any information entered in the Download Information Window. Selecting the Cancel button dismisses the Edit Information for Firmware Download Window so you can edit the Firmware Download models list and discards any information entered in the Download Information Window. Changes the cursor to a question mark which, when you click on any area of the Edit Information for Firmware Download Window, displays a short description. Describing the Firmware Download Window This section describes the sections of the Firmware Download window (see Figure 2). The window enables you to start and stop the download and monitor the download s progress. Once you initiate a download, and then dismiss the Edit Information for Firmware Download Window by clicking the OK button as described in Network Configuration Utilities Page 18

20 Downloading Firmware Menus Describing the Firmware Download Window This section describes menus and menu options (see Table 2). Underscored letters in menu options indicate keyboard shortcuts. Table 2: Menus and Options Menu File Edit View Options Print Opens a submenu providing page setup and printing options. Close (or Alt + F4) Closes the Firmware Download window. Select All (or Ctrl + A) Selects all device models. Disabled if all are selected already. Download Information Opens a dialog box providing firmware download options. a Remove Selected Device(s) (or Ctrl + D) Permanently removes selected device models from the models list. b Show Toolbar When enabled, the window displays toolbar icons. Show Toolbar Labels When enabled, the window displays text labels under the toolbar icons. Show Tool Tips When enabled, the window displays pop-up windows providing icon usage tips when the mouse pointer is held over toolbar icons. Show Status Help When enabled, the window displays information at the bottom of the window about window elements where the mouse pointer is held. Connection Status Opens a submenu providing information about the connection to servers and services in the landscape. Sort (or Ctrl + S) Opens a window that enables you to use sort criteria to specify the order that device models are listed in the Models List panel. Column Order (or Ctrl + C) Opens a window that enables you to specify the order of device model information columns in the Models List Panel. Network Configuration Utilities Page 20

Utilities Mirrors the Icon Submenu from the device model icon. Information Displays the Information dialog box. Acknowledge Acknowledges an alarm. Start Download for all items Starts firmware download to all device models displayed in the Models List Panel. ad Start Download for selected item(s) Starts firmware download to selected device models. abd Stop Firmware Download Stops a PENDING firmware download, and prevents rebooting of devices whose downloads are IN PROGRESS. e Preferences (or Ctrl + V) Opens a window that enables you to modify user preferences. Clear User Preferences Resets user preferences to default status. What s This? Transforms the mouse pointer into a context-sensitive help pointer. About Firmware Download Opens a copyright window. 22 Downloading Firmware Toolbar Icons Describing the Firmware Download Window The toolbar below the Menu enables you to access menu choices quickly by clicking a toolbar icon. These icons are described below (see Table 3). Tip: When you place the cursor over a toolbar icon, a pop-up Tool Tip identifying the icon displays. Further descriptive text is provided when you select the What s This? help option and then click the toolbar icon. This option is only available when a download is in progress. Model Information Panel The Model Information Panel displays detailed information about the last model selected in the Models List. If multiple models are selected, the information pertains to the last one clicked. The panel includes a device icon and four tabbed panels, described below (see Table 4). Displays several fields of detailed system information. These are described below. The fully qualified domain name of the managed node. The address SPECTRUM is using to communicate with the device s SNMP agent. The port Internet address of the interface. This information is only available on interface ports. A written description of the selected device. The person to contact when device problems occur. This is specified when the device is created and can be modified in certain SpectroGRAPH views. The physical location of the selected device. Displays informational messages concerning the status of the operation currently being performed. Device location listed in SpectroGRAPH s hierarchical format. For example, Topological Location: coke of type Landscape ; Universe of type Universe. User-created notes for the selected device. 24 Downloading Firmware Models List Panel Describing the Firmware Download Window The Models List Panel lists device model attributes and download status information. The panel includes eight columns (two hidden), described below (see Table 5). Table 5: Models List Panel Column Model Name Network Address Status Start Time End Time Model Type Block Count The name of the SPECTRUM model that represents the selected device. A short description of the selected device. The address SPECTRUM is using to communicate with the device s SNMP agent. Indicates the status of a download: PENDING The download is waiting to begin. IN PROGRESS The download is in progress. SUCCESS The download completed successfully. FAILURE The download failed. REBOOTING The device is rebooting following download. REBOOTED The device successfully rebooted following download. ABORTED The download has been aborted by the user. The time the download started. The time the download finished. The name of the SPECTRUM model type that represents the selected device. Hidden by default. The number of blocks transferred. Not supported by all devices. Hidden by default. To rearrange columns and display hidden columns in the Models List Panel: 1 Access the Column Order dialog box (see Figure 3) by either: a Clicking the Order toolbar icon, or Network Configuration Utilities Page 24

25 Downloading Firmware Describing the Firmware Download Window b c Selecting Column Order from the View menu, or Typing Alt+V+O (Alt, V, then O) on the keyboard. 2 In the Shown Order list, highlight the column names you wish to hide, then click the button. The selected column names move to the Hidden list. 3 In the Hidden list, highlight the column names you wish to show, then click the button. The selected column names move to the Shown Order list. a To move all items from one list to the other, click the or button. 4 To rearrange columns, highlight the column name(s), then click the or arrow to move the column(s) up or down in the current list. 26 Downloading Firmware Filter/Search Panel Describing the Firmware Download Window Located below the Models List Panel s horizontal scroll bar, this panel includes four buttons and a text field you can use for filtering and searching the Models List (see Table 6). Table 6: Filter/Search Panel Buttons Button Search Shown Prev Next Toggles between Filter and Search function. Default is Search. Specifies which column to filter/search in. Default is Shown. Finds the previous entry matching the search criteria you enter in the text field. Enabled only when you select the Search option. Finds the next entry matching the search criteria you enter in the text field. Enabled only when you select the Search option. Connection Status Clicking the button at the bottom right of the Firmware Download window displays the Connection Status dialog box, which shows the connection status and type of service of all servers accessible by the application. Possible types of service include Landscape and View. The color of the status icon indicates the condition of the connection. Color-coded conditions include green (complete service), yellow (degraded service), and red (total loss of service). The Connection Log provides date/time information and status messages for the service selected in the dialog box. Possible messages include, Connection lost, and Connection re-established. Verifying the Operation/Exception Handling The Firmware Download Window s Models List Panel gives you several visual cues as to the status of a download via text displayed in the following columns: Network Configuration Utilities Page 26

Setting Preferences You can change Firmware Download startup default settings to best suit your needs by using the Preferences dialog box. The dialog box enables you to customize and save preference settings, which provides persistence from one Firmware Download session to another. You can access the Preferences dialog box by either of the following methods: Select Options>Preferences from the Firmware Download Window s Menu bar. Press Ctrl+y on the keyboard with the Firmware Download Window in the foreground (doing so with the Search Manager window in the foreground will launch the Search Manager Preferences dialog box). This panel is displayed first. Firmware Download preferences enables you to change default settings used by the Firmware Download Tool. Display preferences enables you to change the way the Firmware Download Tool GUI behaves at startup and exit. Connection Preferences This panel enables you to modify request and response information between the SpectroSERVER and the Firmware Download Tool. Table 9 describes the connection preferences. If selected, shows the Select SpectroSERVER dialog at startup where you choose which server you initially connect to. If there is only one server in the landscape map, the selection dialog will not appear regardless of the setting. Host name on which the target SPECTRUM UI is running. TFTP Server IP Address The IP address of the download server. This address must be specified for the download to succeed. TFTP Filename The path for the firmware image file you want to download. You must specify a.fls file. You can specify either the image filename or the full path to the image filename, depending upon the configuration of the TFTP server. Display Preferences This panel allows you to change preferences that can be used in the presentation of the Firmware Download Window (see Figure 2). Table 11 describes the Display Preferences. 36 Modifying Community Strings Describes how to use the Network Configuration Utilities Modify Community Strings Tool to modify community strings for devices. Community Strings Overview For some newer intelligent devices including all SmartSwitch modules MIB information is organized into a series of components, each of which controls a defined set of logically grouped objects. For example, the EMM-E6 s bridging information is organized into its own component and repeater information resides in three separate components, one for each of the EMM-E6 s internal repeater channels. In the original versions of these devices, each MIB component is protected by its own set of user-configurable read only, read/write, and superuser community strings. These strings determine the level of access (read only, read/write, or superuser) that will be granted to the information controlled by each component. Newer versions of devices with this component-based MIB architecture have been simplified somewhat. These devices support a single, global set of community strings, with small modifications added automatically to accommodate multiple instances of the same MIB component (as occurs in multi-channel Ethernet repeaters or multi-ring Token Ring devices). The Modify Community Name Tool supports those devices which implement global community strings, whether the devices support the chassis MIB (Rev or later), or the ctchassis2 MIB. The Modify Community Strings Tool enables you to modify the community strings of multiple devices in a single step. You can also modify the community string of the SPECTRUM model representing each device. Network Configuration Utilities Page 36

37 Modifying Community Strings Configuring the Community String Change Configuring the Community String Change Before You Start Before you start a community string change, make sure the models list compiled (or selected) in Search Manager and displayed in the Modify Community Strings window represents intelligent devices that implement global community strings. Devices of differing model types can be selected as long as they support the chassis MIB (Rev or later), or the ctchassis2 MIB. To access the Modify Community Strings Tool: 1 Open the Search Manager application and compile a models list. 2 Select one or more models, and then choose Modify Community Strings from the Management menu. The Edit Information for Community String Change Window appears. Note: If for any reason some or all of the device(s) in your list are invalid (e.g., devices not supported by the Modify Community Strings application, devices unable to be contacted, device models for which you do not have write access, etc.), an Invalid Models Window appears first. See Table 13 for more information about these parameters. 2 Click the OK button to dismiss the Edit Information for Community String Change Window, save any changes made, and edit the Modify Community Strings models list or, 3 Click the Cancel button to dismiss the Edit Information for Community String Change Window, discard any changes made, and edit the Modify Community Strings models list. Performing Community String Changes to Selected Devices To perform community string changes to selected models: 1 Edit the Modify Community Strings models list by selecting device(s) for the change from the list of devices in the display panel. This list may be identical to the list compiled in Search Manager, or you can select a subset of devices. 2 Select Modify Community Strings from the Edit menu. Follow the instructions in Configuring and Starting the Change Edit Information for Community String Change Window The Edit Information for Community String Change Window provides a means of entering various community strings for some intelligent networking hardware devices. Action Buttons Becomes active when you enter a Current Super User community string, and at least one community string value to be modified, or the SPECTRUM community string. Clicking the OK button dismisses the Edit Information for Community String Change Window so you can edit the Modify Community Strings models list, and saves any information entered in the Edit Information for Community String Change Window.
