4 Introduction This section introduces the SPECTRUM Device Management documentation for Cheetah Gateway Integration. This introduction contains the following topics: Purpose and Scope Required Reading Supported Devices (Page 5) The SPECTRUM Model (Page 5) Purpose and Scope Use this document as a guide for managing the devices described on Page 5 with SPECTRUM management module SM-CHT000. This document describes the icons, menus, and views that enable you to remotely monitor, configure, and troubleshoot devices through software models in your SPECTRUM database. Information specific to SM-CHT1000 is what is primarily included in this document. For general information about device management using SPECTRUM and explanations of SPECTRUM functionality and navigation techniques, refer to the topics listed under Required Reading. 5 Supported Devices Tollgrade s Cheetah products, including CheetahNet (formerly NetMentor ) are network management products for non-snmp components of the broadband universe. They monitor RF (Radio Frequency), and HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coax) components. The CheetahNet/NetMentor software package, with optional SNMP Agent Module, has the capability of converting their proprietary events into SNMPv1/v2 alarms and traps. This management module will use the Southbound Gateway integration to allow traps to be received and events to be created in SPECTRUM. This management module provides an integration between the CheetahNet/NetMentor management application including the SNMP agent module, and SPECTRUM. This integration can report events on the following types of HFC devices: Power Supply Amplifier Line Monitor Test Point Fiber Node HEFiber For further information refer to the Southbound Gateway Toolkit Guide. Further information about CheetahNet/NetMentor can be found at the following URL: index.html?cheetah.html The SPECTRUM Model There are no specific Cheetah model types; the EventAdmin and EventModel model types are provided by the Southbound Gateway and used to manage the information sent to SPECTRUM from NetMentor. The EventAdmin is a container model type and is used to represent the NetMentor management application. EventModels represent unique sources of trap information passed to SPECTRUM by the CheetahNet/NetMentor application. EventModels are automatically placed in a topology view that can be accessed by drilling down from the EventAdmin. These icons do not show any connectivity with one another since they represent an event source, not necessarily a physical device or component. When the EventAdmin receives a trap from the CheetahNet/NetMentor application, it maps the trap to a SPECTRUM event and dispatches the Device Management Page 5 Cheetah Gateway Integration

6 event to the appropriate EventModel for processing. If an EventModel representing the unique source of trap information does not yet exist, it is automatically created. Some events may create or clear alarms. Alarm and event information can be viewed in SPECTRUM s Alarm Manager. See Traps, Events, and Alarms (Page 9) for more information on how traps are processed. Note: When you represent the CheetahNet/NetMentor system with the EventAdmin model, you are representing the management application, not the host machine that the application is running on. To manage this host machine, create a separate model of the appropriate model type. The EventAdmin s network address is stored in the attribute named trapipaddress, instead of the usual NetworkAddress attribute. This prevents the EventAdmin from interfering with another SPECTRUM model that is managing the device containing that network address, i.e. the model that is managing the host machine. Creating the EventAdmin Model Follow the steps below to create the EventAdmin model to represent the CheetahNet/NetMentor management application. 1 Make sure that the CheetahNet/NetMentor application is up and running. 2 If you are working in a fault tolerant environment, review the instructions in Fault Tolerant Environments (Page 14). 3 In SPECTRUM, go to the view that you want to create the model in and choose Edit mode. In most situations, you will create the EventAdmin model in the same topology view as the VNM icon. 4 Go to the Edit menu and choose the New Model option. 5 In the Select Model Type dialog box, find the EventAdmin choice, select it, and click OK. 6 The dialog box in Figure 1 appears. 7 Figure 1: Creating an EventAdmin Model 7 Fill in the fields with the correct values. Each of these fields are defined below. Click the OK button. This generates an EventAdmin model. A default EventModel is also created and is contained in the EventAdmin model. This model is used for fault tolerant functionality (see Fault Tolerant Environments on Page 14). Model Name This the field that defines the EventAdmin s model name. This model name appears in the field at the top of the EventAdmin icon. Network Address This is the network address of the Cheetah- Net/NetMentor management application host machine. Security String The security string is an optional value. It helps define who can have viewing and editing access to this model. More information on SPECTRUM security and security strings can be found in the Security and User Maintenance guide. Manager Name This button allows you to select the Manager Name. Select NetMentor from the list. EventModel Prefix This field is prepended to the EventModel Name for all of the EventModels contained by this EventAdmin. It gives you a way to ensure consistent naming prefixes for all EventModels associated with a particular EventAdmin. This is useful for sorting/filtering in various SPECTRUM applications. EventAdmin Model Status Once you have instantiated an EventAdmin model, its status becomes green (Normal) even if there are not yet any EventModel models Device Management Page 7 Cheetah Gateway Integration

8 associated with it. This status changes to reflect alarms asserted on the EventAdmin model. Note: SPECTRUM does not monitor the status of the CheetahNet/NetMentor application, so the status of the model does not represent the state of the CheetahNet/NetMentor application, nor does it represent the state of the third-party application s host machine. 9 Traps, Events, and Alarms This section describes how traps sent by the CheetahNet/NetMentor integration are processed and managed by the EventAdmin and EventModels. Access: From the Icon Subviews menu for the EventAdmin model, select Topology. As CheetahNet/NetMentor sends traps to SPECTRUM, the EventAdmin model will receive these traps and map them to a SPECTRUM event. These events are sent to an EventModel that represents the trap source. The trap source is identified by the value of the CNAlarmResource and the CNAlarmSubResource variable bindings sent in the trap. Each of these variable bindings is from the CNAlarmsMib (CheetahNet Alarms MIB). If an EventModel representing the trap source does not exist, it will automatically be created. When the event is received by the EventModel, it is processed and may be used to create or clear an alarm. 11 EventAdmin EventModel Parameter View This section describes this parameter view which is available for the Cheetah Gateway Integration management module. EventAdmin EventModel Parameter View Access: From the Icon Subviews menu for the EventModel model icon, select EventModel Parameters. 12 The following fields are available: Model Name This is the field that defines the EventAdmin s model name. This model name appears in the field at the top of the EventAdmin icon. Network Address This is the network address of the CheetahNet/NetMentor management application host machine. Security String The security string is an optional value. It helps define who can have viewing and editing access to this model. More information on SPECTRUM security and security strings can be found in the Security and User Maintenance guide. Manager Name This button allows you to select the Manager Name. NetMentor is the Manager Name for this integration. EventModel Prefix This field is prepended to the EventModel Name for all of the EventModels contained by this EventAdmin. Trap Storm Rate The number of traps received per second that will disable trap handling, if the rate is sustained for the amount of time specified by the Trap StormLength attribute described below. The default setting is 20. Trap Storm Length The number of seconds over which the Trap Storm Rate (described above) must be sustained in order to constitute a trap storm and disable trap handling for the EventAdmin model. 13 Model Information View This section provides a brief overview of the Model Information view. Model Information views display administrative information about devices and their applications and let you set thresholds and alarm severity for the devices. Figure 2 shows a sample Model Information view. The layout of this view is the same for all model types in SPECTRUM but some information will vary depending on the model it defines. Refer to the SPECTRUM Views documentation for a complete description of this view. 14 Fault Tolerant Environments This section describes how to work with the CheetahNet/NetMentor integration in a fault tolerant environment. Fault tolerance is provided by having more than one SpectroSERVER available for managing a given landscape. In the event that the primary SpectroSERVER fails, the secondary SpectroSERVER will take over. To set up a fault tolerant environment when working with the CheetahNet/NetMentor integration: 1 Set up the fault tolerant environment as described in the Distributed SpectroSERVER Guide. 2 Start the primary SpectroSERVER and then start the CheetahNet/NetMentor management application. 3 Create the EventAdmin model. See Creating the EventAdmin Model (Page 6) for instructions. 4 A default EventModel model will be created automatically once the EventAdmin model is activated. 5 Synchronize the primary and secondary SpectroSERVER databases using SPECTRUM s Online Backup feature. See the Distributed SpectroSERVER Guide and the Database Management Guide for instructions. If the primary SpectroSERVER goes down, and the secondary SpectroSERVER takes over, the default EventModel model is used to process incoming events. When the secondary SpectroSERVER is monitoring the network, new EventModel models are not created when events are received by the EventAdmin model. First the EventAdmin checks to see if there is an appropriate existing EventModel to send the events to. If there is not, the events are sent to the default EventModel model. Allowing the secondary SpectroSERVER to create new EventModel models would cause disparate model handle information between the primary and secondary SpectroSERVERs. 15 cause the Archive Manager to store the event and statistical information for a single event source in different places, as if the information were actually from different event sources. The default EventModel prevents this from happening. If the EventAdmin or default EventModel is destroyed on the primary, secondary or tertiary server, the above steps need to be repeated. Steps 1-5 need to be repeated if the models are destroyed on the primary SpectroSERVER. Steps 2-5 need to be repeated if the models are destroyed on the secondary or tertiary SpectroSERVER.
