Chapter 1 Introduction What Is in This Chapter This chapter describes the ESX-820 device in SPECTRUM. It also provides the Model Type Name assigned to the ESX-820 device in SPECTRUM. The model type name refers to the template used to specify device attributes, actions and associations for device models in SPECTRUM. ESX-820 Management Module The ESX-820 Management Module manages ESX-820 devices using the SNMP network management agent and the Management Information Bases (MIBs), included with the management module. The model type name for the ESX-820 is Esx_820. NOTE If you are running a previous version of SPECTRUM, the following user interface aspects may differ from those in SPECTRUM version 4.0: Order and names of menu selections Navigational features (mouse button functionality) For information about menu selections and navigating within previous versions of SPECTRUM, refer to the SPECTRUM System User s Guide. For information about menu selections and navigating within SPECTRUM version 4.0, refer to the SPECTRUM Operator s Reference E3 1-1

ESX-820 Applications ESX-820 Applications The ESX-820 supports both common and device-specific applications. Common applications are described in the SPECTRUM Application View Reference Guide, and are as follows: Bridging (CSIBridge) - Spanning Tree (Ct_Stp_App) - Transparent (Transparnt_App) - Ethernet Special Database (Ct_BdgEnet_App) - Static (Static_App) - PPP - Source Routing MIB-II (SNMP2_Agent) - IP (IP2_App) - System (System2_App) - ICMP (ICMP_App) - UDP (UDP2_App) The ESX-820 supports four device-specific applications. These applications are described in Chapter 5, Application View, and are as follows: Node Apps (Esx820_Node) Board Apps (Esx820_Board) Bridge Apps (Esx820_Bridge) Starbridge Apps (Esx820_SBridge) RMON and DLM are also supported and SPECTRUM management of these MIBs may be purchased separately. Refer to the documentation provided with the RMON and DLM management modules for descriptions of these capabilities. The following chapters explain how to use SPECTRUM and the management module software to monitor and manage an ESX-820. Introduction ESX Management Module Guide

Chapter 2 Device View What Is in This Chapter The Device view for the ESX-820 allows you to view the logical representations of the ESX-820 device and ports. The Device view also provides you with menu bar access to views that monitor and control the ESX- 820 s performance and its ports. Accessing the Device View Access the Device view using one of the following methods: Double-click on the Device view button of the ESX-820 device icon. Device View Button E3 2-1

Accessing the Device View Logical Interface Icons Logical Interface Icons An ESX-820 Device view displays a logical representation of the device s interfaces. An interface icon represents each port on the ESX-820 device. Additional views for the interface can be accessed by single-clicking on the interface icon to highlight it and then selecting the Icon Subviews option from the View menu, or by double-clicking on the icon s zones. The Port Notes facility is also accessed from the Icon Subviews menu. The Logical Interface icon consists of six zones, providing configuration and performance information. Figure 2-2 provides a detailed illustration of the Logical Interface icon and the following sections provide further information about each icon zone. Figure 2-2. The zone also displays the interface number. Device View ESX Management Module Guide

Accessing the Device View Logical Interface Icons IF Status View Label The IF Status label (see Figure 2-2) displays a text label and an appropriate background color to represent the current status of the interface. Table 2-1 shows the possible interface statuses and their respective colors. Table 2-1. Interface Status Label Definitions Operational Status Administrative Status Text Display Color ON ON ON Green OFF OFF OFF Blue OFF ON OFF Yellow Testing Testing Test Red Double-clicking on this IF Status view label accesses the Interface Status view which provides the following information on the status of the interface: Operational Status The current operational state of the interface is displayed (ON, OFF, or Testing). Administrative Status The desired operational state of the interface (Default, ON, OFF, or Testing). You can select the state using the File/Update option. IF Configuration View Label/Interface Type The IF Configuration view label (see Figure 2-2) displays the type of ESX-820 interface. Possible interface types are shown in Table 2-1. Double-clicking on the IF Configuration view label accesses the Interface Configuration view, which provides the following information for the interface below the banner: Operation Status The current operational state of the interface (On, Off, or Testing). Admin Status The desired operational state of the interface (On, Off, or Testing) selectable through the File/Update option. Last Change The System UpTime value when the interface entered its current operational state. This is provided in the format: D + HH:MM:SS, for example, 1+20:40:25 if the ESX-820 has been active for one day and 20 hours, 40 minutes and 25 seconds E3 Device View 2-5

Accessing the Device View Performance View Network Name/Address IP Address assigned to the ESX-820. Physical Address The Ethernet (MAC) address of the interface. Bandwidth The estimated bandwidth of the interface measured in bits per second. For interfaces that do not vary in bandwidth, or when no accurate estimate can be made, a nominal bandwidth is provided. Packet Size The largest packet that can be transmitted or received by the port, measured in octets. Queue Length The length of the outbound packet queue, in packets. Performance View Label/Logical Gauge Double-clicking on this zone of the Logical Interface icon (see Figure 2-2) accesses the Performance view for the interface which provides routing information (traffic flow) in packets, as described below. This area is also a Logical Gauge which is described later in this chapter. Performance View For information on the Performance view, refer to the SPECTRUM Operator s Reference. Interface Detail View The Interface Detail view is accessed by clicking on the Detail button in the Performance view. It provides three color-coded pie charts displaying packet breakdown information for the interface. Table 2-2 through Table 2-4 list the information provided by these pie charts. Each statistic is presented as a total amount since the interface was initialized and as a percentage of overall network traffic. Device View ESX Management Module Guide
