IMD PORTFOLIO WORKSHOP 2018 Prof. Chris Joslin
Overview Portfolio Requirements Formats Submission Review Process Considerations General Q & A + Workshop Review
Portfolio Requirements All Portfolios should contain: A Cover Letter ~ briefly introducing yourself, why you want to come to the program A Resume/Curriculum Vitae ~ covering your educational background, skills, etc. 6-8 Examples of Creative Work ~ good examples of your work An Index ~ work identifying and describing each of the examples of work submitted
Portfolio Requirements The Cover Letter No more than 1.5 pages 1 page is better (makes it easier to read) Be concise and to the point; it s the first impression we get of your portfolio Introduce yourself, and present why you think the program would be a good fit
Portfolio Requirements A Resume/Curriculum Vitae 1-2 Pages, don t make 2 pages if not required Educational Background Awards/Scholarships Professional Activities Positions Held (related to IMD) Extra-Curricular Activities Professionally presented, concise, and relevant information
Portfolio Requirements 6-8 Examples of Creative Work Art, Design, Electronic work Good examples include: Digital Work: Digital Art, 3D Modelling, Stills from 2D/3D Animation, Website Design, Game Design Traditional Art: Sketches, Drawings, Pastels, Paintings, Sculptures (photos only), Photography Not evaluated: works of literature (poems, stories, etc.), music/songs
Portfolio Requirements 6-8 Examples of Creative Work The Portfolio is an example of work as well; make sure it is presented nicely poor portfolio presentations can severely impact marks
Portfolio Requirements Example Index The example index is used to provide an overview of the example work It can come before or after the examples, whichever is felt to present the work better An index before might indicate a preparedness for work An index after might let the work speak for itself Each piece should be described, the medium used should be indicated, and any other relevant information
Formats Website Submissions are restricted to: Documents (Cover Letter, Resume): Portable Document Format (.pdf), Microsoft Word 2007 Document (.docx), Microsoft Word Document (.doc) All Word documents are converted to PDF Videos: YouTube, Vimeo (shares only)
Formats Videos When submitting Videos, use the Share not the direct URL
Formats Website Your Application ID is required in order to create an account on the website
Submission Final Deadline Portfolio Deadline is Thursday March 1 st Submissions are reviewed together Reviewing is completed in ~2 weeks
Early Bird Submission General Process If your portfolio is ready before either of these two dates, we will review it early and immediately 1 st February 15 th February This is a fast track process: If your portfolio is exceptional, results will be presented to admissions within a few days If your portfolio does not meet this criteria it will be put into the main pool and reviewed with all others after the March deadline
Early Bird Submission Submitting By Website (in Profile section)
Review Process Each Portfolio is reviewed by 4 faculty members from the IMD Program (2 Carleton, 2 Algonquin) Each portfolio is scored out of 100 Scoring is mainly subjective Scores are then averaged Eliminates chance a portfolio being rejected due to some personal taste
Review Process Here is a list of reasons a portfolio might score lower: Lack of Variety Similar pieces of work (especially from same piece) Poor quality presentation Sloppy angles, poor hand written elements, no binding, poor quality print Dubious source Uneven quality, poor descriptions, unrealistic creations, etc.
Review Process Scores are entered into a central system used by Carleton Admissions Scores are used to determine an acceptable candidate; i.e. No portfolio = No admission
Considerations The Portfolio We are always looking for good creative work, relevance to the program is secondary Therefore, 6-8 different pieces are better than 6-8 similar pieces (i.e. broad type is better) Think about your presentation, how will it look to the reviewer? Don t forget the reviewer has to review a lot of other portfolios, so make sure it s easy to understand and read
Considerations The Portfolio Websites If you have a website, do not just print the website directly; arrange it so we can easily see pages
Considerations The Portfolio Games/Videos The same for a video, we might not be able to see or get chance to see an entire video, so highlight the scenes (using a 2 x 3 format)
Considerations Dubious Sources Is this a Master Artist?
Considerations Dubious Sources Or a Photoshop Filter?
Considerations Layouts & Text It is important that we can clearly understand your piece; therefore a piece should be properly described (in the index and on the piece itself) Text Text Text Text Text These are examples of the layouts you might use, but do not feel constrained to these at all
Considerations Layouts & Text Try and give a proper title to your work, either in the text or even as a separate item Describe your work clearly, try to cover things like motivation, method, and any other details pertinent to the work Take care when setting our your pieces, a poorly laid out portfolio can be detrimental
Considerations What are good examples Your portfolio should contain a breadth of work, rather than all similar works Example: if you have a good drawing don t sacrifice it over a mediocre 3D piece We require just 6 to 8 pieces, nicely presented
Considerations Printing Generally, we are looking for quality pieces: an exemplification that the applicant has an attention for detail and cares about their submission If you need to print your work, consider going to a professional printing place to get it done Consider setting pieces prior to printing rather than gluing pieces together
