1 Faculty Guide Creating and Editing Closed Captions Videos you upload into Canvas are automatically captioned. Auto-generated captions are up to 80% accurate. The following instructions will show you how to edit these machine-created captions. The caption complete tag circled in the image below indicates that auto captions have been created and are available for editing. Editing Captions Using the Cielo24 Customer Edit Tool To modify the captions, you can use the Cielo24 Customer Edit tool. To access it, go to My Media and either click the title or thumbnail of the video. Click the Actions [1] dropdown menu and select +Caption Requests [2]. Page 1 of 9

3 The Cielo24 Customer Edit Tool will open allowing you to edit the captions while watching the video. [1] Go to Start of Last Sentence [2] Go to Beginning of This Sentence [3] Play or Pause [4] Go to Beginning of Next Sentence [5] Change the Start Time of the caption (when it begins to display on the video) [6] Change the End Time of the caption (when it stops displaying on the video) Be sure to click [7] Save and then [8] Approve when you are finished editing. 4 Editing Captions Using a Text Edit Tool An alternative to using the Cielo24 Customer Edit Tool is to download the file, use a text edit application to modify the caption file, and then upload the revised file. Please note that if you use this method, you will not be able to edit the file with the Cielo24 Customer Edit Tool later. First, go to My Media and either click the title or thumbnail of the video: Next, download the caption file. Click the Actions [1] dropdown menu and select Edit [2]. Page 4 of 9

5 Click Captions. Click the Download icon. The.srt file (i.e: the caption file) will be downloaded to your Downloads folder, or wherever files typically go when downloaded from the Internet. Page 5 of 9

6 If you are using a PC, open the file with either WordPad or Notepad++ (not regular Notepad). Mac users should open the file in TextEdit. When you open the file, it should look similar to this. Let s define what is displayed on each line. On the first line is the caption number. Caption numbers should always be in sequential order. If you remove the caption number, the caption will not display on the video. The second line is the time of the caption from beginning to end. The numbers indicate hours, minutes, seconds, and milliseconds. In this example, the first caption would be displayed from approximately the one second mark to the 6 second mark in the video. The third and fourth lines are the text that will be displayed on the video; they are the actual captions. Page 6 of 9

7 When you see an error in the text, make the corrections. In the example above, you would need to change the first word Well to We ll. You can also edit the timings in the text editor application. However, be careful when doing so because you will need to edit all subsequent timings as well. Once you have edited the caption file, save it. Do not change the file extension; it should remain a.srt file. The final step is to delete the original the caption file in Kaltura and then upload the corrected version. To delete the original file, click the Delete icon. Then, confirm you would like to delete the caption file by clicking the Delete button. The final step is to upload the updated caption file. 8 Click the Browse button [1] and navigate to the updated caption file and click Open. Select the Language [2] and then enter a Label [3]. The text that you type in the Label field will appear in the Caption window. Generally, you will type English. Click Save when you are finished. If you skipped the step above where you delete the original caption file, you will now have two caption files for this video and will need to set which one is the default. 9 Re-generating caption files If you need the system to re-generate a caption file, you will need to re-upload the video.
