4 Introduction The D&D Knowledge Management Information Tool (D&D KM-IT) is a web-based knowledge management information portal developed for the deactivation & decommissioning (D&D) user community The system is being developed by Florida International University s Applied Research Center (ARC) in collaboration with the Department of Energy Office of (DOE-EM) and other key partners The web-based tool strives to preserve and maintain D&D knowledge base across the DOE Complex by actively engaging the D&D community The system also seeks to share D&D knowledge among DOE site managers, site contractors, and other stakeholders 4
5 Introduction, con t The system is an electronic platform for sharing technical information, technologies evaluation/demonstrations, lessons learned, best practices and historical D&D data repository The system is a Community Driven System we listen to the D&D community to provide current and relevant information needed by the community The system intents to minimize the knowledge gap among community members in order to accelerate D&D projects i.e., share lessons learned The system serves as a learning & training tool for our future workforce (DOE Fellows, FIU students, being trained in D&D technologies) 5

10 D&D KM-IT Features D&D KM-IT is a web-based knowledge management information tool custom built for the D&D community. The current features of the system are as follows: D&D Hotline- Hotline allows the D&D community to post problems in a specific D&D area and get solutions from the subject matter specialists (SMS). Users can also search for previously published problems and solutions provided by D&D experts across the DOE Complex Technology Database -Technology provides information on D&D related technologies and any associated demonstrations & deployments of D&D technologies. It provides technology descriptions, benefits, limitations, and associated links and documents. It also provides vendor information, technology and demonstration fact sheets, and search capabilities 10
11 D&D KM-IT Features, con t Web Crawler- Custom D&D web crawler searches and retrieves information from D&D related websites. The crawler provides the user with a list of the bestmatching web pages, usually with a short summary containing the document's title or parts of the text Lessons Learned- Lessons Learned provides a repository of documents published by the D&D community users. This will allow them to share their experience with the community. This feature also showcases Lessons Learned documents developed by EFCOG members with support from FIU DOE Fellows Best Practices - Best practices provides a repository of D&D best practices documents published by the D&D community users. This feature also showcases Best Practices documents developed by EFCOG members with support from FIU DOE Fellows 11
12 D&D KM-IT Features, con t Video Picture Library-Video/picture library allows community users to upload D&D technology and demonstration videos and pictures to the D&D KM-IT system. The videos and pictures could then be viewed by the D&D community ALARA Reports -Weekly reports published by the ALARA Center at DOE s Hanford site include the status of the D&D activities that have taken place across Hanford and other DOE sites. It includes the list of ALARA center activities for consecutive weeks. This feature makes the reports available to the entire D&D user community Specialist Directory- Specialist Directory provides a directory of D&D specialists in different areas along with their contact information. The user can search the Specialist Directory by name or by area of interest 12
13 D&D KM-IT Features, con t Mobile System- Mobile system will provide access to important D&D KM-IT features through wireless devices. The D&D community users will be able to access the hotline, technology information, specialist directory, lessons learned titles, news/alerts, announcements, events calendar, and vendor information on their wireless devices Vendors - Vendor management will provide a directory of D&D vendors along with their contact information Collaboration Tools -Collaboration tools will provide information-sharing mechanisms such as D&D news, events calendars, links, message boards, and frequently asked questions (FAQs), Wikis and blogs. This will allow the D&D community to interact with fellow members Training- Training component will provide training videos related to D&D work, ALARA Centers training material and custom training for the D&D community 13

15 Conclusions The KM-IT is a modular and expandable system The system can also be made mobile with the integration of mobile devices/technology currently under development The system is supported by subject matter specialists and by the D&D community (ALARA Center, EFCOG Group, DOE-EM) The system maintains and preserves D&D knowledge base Maintains historical data and know-how no need to reinvent the wheel Should be expanded to include the international community Additional efforts are needed to introduce system to entire D&D community (training courses, video presentations, etc) Intellectual property, corporate knowledge issues needs future discussions 15
