5 1. About Engage Zone Control Engage Zone Control is a retrofit section control system for your John Deere 1910 air cart. The system communicates with your air seeder's existing GPS mapping system to prevent overlap by opening and closing up to eight sections per bin, controlling all the bins on your air cart. This Operator s Guide gives instructions for using the system with a John Deere 2630 display. If you re using a different display, contact your dealer for further setup instructions. In order to use Engage Zone Control, you must have all required activations on your If you do not, contact your dealer. 2. 6 3. Configuring the system 3.1. Configure John Deere settings 1. Navigate to the Setup screen: a. Tap the green menu button in the lower right corner of the 2630 screen. b. Tap GS3 (GreenStar). c. Tap GS3. d. Tap to add a check mark to the following boxes: Resources, Machine, Implement, Documentation, and Section Control. NOTE: Other boxes may automatically be checked by default. 10 Initial configuration of the John Deere settings is now complete. To edit an individual setting, tap the corresponding setting on the right side of the JD Main screen Configure Engage Zone Control application 1. Navigate to the Intelligent Ag section control settings screen: a. Tap the green menu button in the lower right corner. b. Tap Intelligent Ag. c. Tap Config. NOTE: Only the Gates and Config buttons are used with the Engage Zone Control application. The other buttons will not change zone control settings. d. Tap Settings. e. Tap Section Control Configure. NOTE: Only the Section Control Configure and Diagnostics buttons are used with the Engage Zone Control application. The other buttons will not change zone control settings. 11 2. Modify Intelligent Ag Section settings: Figure 10: Intelligent Ag Section settings screen a. Number of Bins: Input the number of bins on your air cart. b. Section Ordering: Configure section ordering in the application based on the section ordering on your toolbar. Each number 1-8 corresponds with a gate on the Engage Zone Control unit, as shown in Figure 11. Figure 11: Engage Zone Control unit gate numbering Page 11 of 20

12 EXAMPLE 1: If your air seeder has 6 sections, you need to disable two gates. To disable gates, select Off for those gates. The highest gate number in the settings should be the number of sections you have. A 6-section air seeder won t use gate numbers 07 and 08. Figure 12: Section ordering with sections off EXAMPLE 2: If your air seeder has two rows of four manifolds (two gates mapped to one section), manifolds 1-4 in the front correspond with gates 1-4 of the unit. Manifolds 1-4 in the back correspond with gates 5-8 of the unit. Your section ordering would be: Figure 13: Section ordering with two gates mapped to one section c. Section Width: Input the width of each section on the toolbar. d. Implement Type: Implement is type 1 unless otherwise directed by a dealer. e. Time of Flight Compensation: Time of flight compensation supplements the JD turn on/turn off times by accounting for the time it takes product to travel to each individual section. Measure this by following the procedure below. i. For each section of each bin, manually actuate your meter and use a stopwatch to time how many seconds it takes the seed to get to the ground. ii. Input these times into the Time of Flight Compensation section of the Intelligent Ag Section Settings screen. iii. Tap Save. Figure 14: Intelligent Ag time of flight compensation Page 12 of 20

Navigate to the Intelligent Ag section control settings screen, if you are not already there. b. For each bin, find the serial number for gates 1-4 and gates 5-8 by looking through the small window on the left side of the top of the Engage Zone Control unit (when you re facing the tractor). Enter these into the application. NOTE: Bin 1 is the bin closest to the tractor. Bins 2 and 3 (if applicable) are further away from the tractor. c. Tap Save. 4. Edit JD Section Control settings a. Navigate to the JD Section Control Settings screen. Tap Turn On/Off Settings and input the longest Time of Flight Compensation time as the turn on time, and the shortest time as your turn off time Page 13 of 20

14 b. Tap Accept. Figure 16: JD Section Control On/Off settings screen 5. If needed, refine your times using one of the procedures below. OPTION 1: a. Make a round with your air seeder. You must be going the same speed in and out of the headland every pass for the timing to be correct and section control application to be accurate. Stop the seeder after you make your turn and began to apply product. b. Exit the tractor and dig product in the ground going into your turn and coming out of your turn to see how much overlap or skips you have. Use the chart below to calculate how many seconds to adjust your timing to reduce the error. MPH Ft/sec MPH Ft/sec Table 1: MPH to Ft/sec conversion c. Navigate to the JD Section Control Settings screen and adjust your turn on turn on and turn off times based on the number above. Tap Accept Page 14 of 20

15 OPTION 2: TIP: If you're overseeding into the headland, increase turn off time. If you're skipping into the headland, lower turn off time. If you're skipping into pass, increase turn on time. If you're overseeding into pass, lower turn on time. a. Seed into a headland and take note of your skips. b. Navigate to the JD Section Control Settings screen. c. Tap Overlap Settings. Select Percent Overlap for the Exterior Boundaries, Interior Boundaries, and Coverage settings. d. Change the percent to over 100% if you want more skip. 16 4. Using the system Monitoring mapping Navigate to the Mapping or Section Control screen to monitor your seeding. Figure 18: JD Section Control screen NOTE: When the toolbar is raised, the gates won t move and won t map coverage. NOTE: Uncheck the Section Control Master box on the Section Control screen if you want to intentionally overseed (such as when seeding into the headland or near field boundaries). Ensure that all gates are open before unchecking the box. To manually close or open a section: 1. Tap the green menu button in the lower right corner. 2. Tap Intelligent Ag. 3. Tap Gates. 4. Tap the number of the section that you want to open or close. NOTE: Manual changes only stay in effect until the JD task controller issues another command. To manually control the system, uncheck Zone Control Enabled Page 16 of 20

17 Figure 19: Engage Zone Control screen Using counters Covered area: total area that you ve gone over with the whole tool. Saved area: area you didn t seed on by using zone control. This is calculated using tractor speed and the work switch state. Tap Reset Counter to reset the values to zero. Updating motor controllers If the motor controller update screen appears on the screen, the motor controllers are updating and no action is required by you. The motor controller LEDs will flash during the update. This may take up to 10 minutes. The update status is indicated by the colors below: Green serial number: Update complete. White serial number: Update in progress. Red serial number: Update failed. Restart the system. If it fails again, contact your dealer. Figure 20: Motor controller update screen Page 17 of 20

18 5. View diagnostics 1. Tap Config on the right Intelligent Ag navigation. 2. Tap Diagnostics. 3. Tap Gate diagnostics. NOTE: Only navigate to this screen when the toolbar is raised so that section control commands are not received during gate positioning. EXAMPLE: As shown in the figure above: Figure 21: Intelligent Ag Gate Diagnostics screen Bin 1, Gate 1 is closed. Tap Open This Gate or Close This Gate to open or close Bin 1, Gate 1. Tap Open This Bin or Close This Bin to open or close all of Bin 1. Tap Open All Bins or Close All Bins to open or close all bins. Tap Reposition This Gate or Reposition All Gates to recalibrate the gate when troubleshooting an error. IMPORTANT: Start the fan before repositioning gates to ensure that there isn t debris in the gate area that will affect gate positioning. Tap Disable Gate to lock the gate and stop it from receiving commands. Once a gate is disabled, the gate will not open or close, even if a command affects all gates. IMPORTANT: Ensure that the gate is open before disabling the gate. Tap Enable & Reposition to re-enable the gate. Tap the right arrow to view diagnostics for Bin 1, Gate Page 18 of 20

19 6. Cleaning and storage At the end of the season, refer to the Engage Zone Control Maintenance Manual ( ) for storage and cleaning best practices. 7. Troubleshooting Problem The Intelligent Ag application does not appear on the John Deere main menu. Error message: On/off settings are linked to the implement. Please select an implement name before modifying Section Control On/Off Settings. There isn t an option to edit Section Control settings during JD auto-configure. Coverage is mapping on the 2630 but section control isn t operating. JD Documentation settings are grayed out when Zone Control is running. Error message: The following gates are in need of repositioning. Troubleshooting steps 1. Verify that the Gateway 300 has power. 2. Verify that the Gateway 300 is wired in accordance with Section 3 of the Engage Zone Control Installation Instructions ( ). Ensure that you ve selected an implement type and name in the JD Equipment settings. Verify that you have section control enabled. 1. Tap GreenStar. 2. Tap GS3. 3. Tap Activations. 4. Press the down arrow. 5. Ensure that Section Control has a checkmark by it. 1. Ensure that Zone Control Enabled is checked in the Engage Zone Control screen. 2. Ensure that Section Control Master is checked on the JD Section Control settings screen. Uncheck Zone Control Enabled on the Engage Zone Control screen to edit settings. 1. Reposition the gate that appears red on the screen. 2. Unplug the Engage Zone Control unit bin harness. Remove the bottom meter cover to ensure that gate movement isn t impeded by product buildup. Clean buildup if necessary. Re-connect the bin harness. Refer to the Engage Zone Control Maintenance Manual ( ) for cleaning procedures. 3. If you repeatedly get the same error on a gate, contact your Intelligent Ag dealer Page 19 of 20

20 Gates won t reposition. Error message: This feature is currently disabled. Error message: There are disabled gates in the system. You may re-enable them in the diagnostics menu. Error message: There are X motor controllers that haven t been mapped to a location. Error message: An unmapped motor controller with serial number XX has disconnected from the control unit. Error message: Motor controller with serial number XX on bin X on the left side has disconnected from the control unit. 1. Run the fan to blow out any product that could be blocking gate movement 2. Unplug the Engage Zone Control unit bin harness. Remove the bottom meter cover to ensure that gate movement isn t impeded by product buildup. Clean buildup if necessary. Re-connect the bin harness. Refer to the Engage Zone Control Maintenance Manual ( ) for cleaning procedures. Ensure that Engage Zone Control is enabled on the Intelligent Ag Settings screen (See Section 2). 1. Tap Config on the right Intelligent Ag navigation. 2. Tap Diagnostics. 3. Tap Gate diagnostics. 4. Tap the arrow buttons until you see the disabled gate. 5. Tap Enable & Reposition. Navigate to the Serial Number Configuration settings screen and ensure that all motor controllers have been configured. Ensure that the motor controller with that serial number is powered and communicating. Refer to the LED codes below: Solid red: Powered and communicating. Flashing red: Powered but not communicating. Fast flashing red: Firmware update in progress. Ensure that the motor controller with that serial number is powered and communicating.
