RECORDING A WELCOME VIDEO USING WINDOWS LIVE MOVIE MAKER A QUICK AND EASY WAY TO MAKE A RECORDING Guide No.: LTD3079 Version No.: 3.0 Update: 11/02/2019
Introduction There are many ways to record a welcome video for your Blackboard area, but in this video we are explaining one simple process. Guide LTD3085 talks through recording a welcome video using Panopto; please use that guide if you feel that it is more appropriate. Before recording Step One: Plan what you want to say to the students. Some people like to write down a script, while others would rather just have notes to remind them of the topics that they want to cover. Either way, practice out loud, or at least consider what it will sound like out loud. Step Two: Get access to a YouTube account. Check with your Programme lead or department administrator to see if there is a Faculty or Programme YouTube account that you can use. If so ask for access. If you have not got access to an official YouTube account you could set-up your own YouTube Channel. The downside to using your own channel is the fact that the faculty will not be able to manage the videos should you leave the institution.
Step Three: Get hold of a webcam. If you do not have your own, Staff can borrow a USB Webcam with an inbuilt microphone from the University Library in Ormskirk. You can book one in advance using the online Loaning Equipment form. The option you will want is near the bottom of the page, and is called Webcam with USB. On the day Step Four: Plug in Webcam and Microphone Plug the webcam in to the USB socket and use the arm at the back of it to rest it on top of your monitor. If a window appears asking for you to type in an administrator username and password, close the window by selecting the Cancel button. Plug in your microphone or headset too. Step Five: Making a Recording with Windows Live Movie Maker There are many ways that you can make a recording. In this guide we go through the simplest way for most people at Edge Hill University to create one. This method will work for people using Windows. Start off by clicking on the Start button at the bottom left of the screen.
In the Search programs and files box that appears, search for Windows Live Movie Maker. Some options will change above the search box. Select Windows Live Movie Maker to open the software.
Near the top left of the screen is a button labelled Webcam video. Click on this button. Select a camera and microphone if prompted. Adjust the Webcam so that it is pointing in the right direction, and when everything is ready, click the Record button. When you have finished recording, click on the Stop button. You will then be prompted to save your recording. Choose a file name and a location to save it in.
Step Six: Upload to YouTube Log into the YouTube account and select the Upload button. On the web version this is found at the top right hand side of the screen. Click on Select files to upload and select the file from the dialogue box. The video will be uploaded, and you can use the options to change the title to make it meaningful, add a description, and change the privacy setting from Public to Unlisted. Finally click on the Publish button at the top right of the page.
You will be given a URL that you can use to share the video with your students. Step Seven: Share video with students Go to Blackboard and on a Content Area page in your Course area, choose Build Content and then Web Link from the drop down menu. On the Create Web Link page that appears, choose a name for the item and add this to the Name box. Paste the video s URL into the URL box. In the Text area write some contextual information.
Select the Insert/Edit Embedded Media button. In the window that opens, paste the URL into the File/URL box. Select the Insert button. The text box will look something like this:
Select the Submit button. The Web Link on the Content Area will look something like: Finally, if you are using a departmental or programme YouTube account, log out of it so that you don t accidentally make any more changes to it.
