The policy now is to offer security support for 10 years after the operating system is made available tot he public. Current operating systems should be supported as follows: Windows Vista until April 11, 2017 Windows 7 until January 14, 2020 Windows 8 until January 10, 2023 For any new operating systems from Microsoft, you can expect security support to last 10 years from the time it is made available to the general public.

You can certainly use your OneDrive (the new name for SkyDrive) for backup purposes as long as you have enough room there. In fact, you can choose to save your photos and documents to the OneDrive by default and also keep copies available on your PC.
