This Quick Guide provides screenshots and brief descriptions of our own build of Edubuntu LTS ( Long Term Support ) with the Xubuntu Desktop and navigation through all of the application menus. Ubuntu Logo Ubuntu is of South African origin and defines the human virtues of compassion and sharing. Edubuntu Logo Edubuntu, also previously known as Ubuntu Education Edition, is an official derivative of the Ubuntu operating system designed for use in classrooms inside schools, homes and communities. Xubuntu Logo Firefox and Chromium LibreOffice Ubuntu Software Center Accessories and Development Education Games and Graphics Internet and Multimedia Office and Other Apps Settings and System Upper Right Menus All Settings Panel Log Out Panel About Computer Reach Xubuntu is a derivative of Ubuntu that uses the Xfce desktop. The Logo identity is the mouse inside the Ubuntu circle.! PAGE 1

2 Login - You have three choices : auser password is System Admin password is and is used as the most common preferred login. and is for use only by a skilled system administrator. Guest Session no password needed, user data will be erased upon logging out, best for libraries and public computer spaces.! PAGE 2

3 The DOCK appears upon login to the AUSER. This is the Xubuntu Desktop environment. Note from left to right: Docky icon on the bottom left allows dock icon size settings, next are the most common applications Firefox, Chromium, LibreOffice Writer, LibreOffice Calc, LibreOffice Impress, and of course the Trash. Along the top left of the Desktop you will find Trash, File System and Home.! PAGE 3

4 Home Folder view contains the AUSER s Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Public, Scratch, Templates and several of our Computer Reach logo files.! PAGE 4

5 File System Folder view shows the entire computer directory structure.! PAGE 5

6 Network Applet menu on the top right allows you to choose your WiFi network. And will display your connected Ethernet ports.! PAGE 6

7 Applications Menu is the main menu with multiple sub-menus.! PAGE 7

8 Application Search - allows for searching and launching of programs and files.! PAGE 8

9 Web Browser opens the default web application, Firefox. Notice also that we have installed an offline version of Wikipedia For Schools version 2013 for immediate access from the hard drive especially for those users who do not have internet access. You will see the web local address of file://home/xxxxxxxx instead of web address of PAGE 9

10 File Manager shows the full view of the AUSER s home folder. Same as when you click the Home icon on the Desktop. This is where your own documents, movies, photos, etc are stored.! PAGE 10

11 Firefox by Mozilla and Chromium by Google are both excellent web browsers that we have set to begin with an offline version of Wikipedia For Schools version 2013 for immediate access from the hard drive especially for those users who do not have internet access.! PAGE 11

12 LibreOffice by The Document Foundation is an excellent free suite of applications featuring Writer - Word Processor, Calc - Spreadsheet and Impress - Presentations as the main apps. Draw Drawings, Math Formula, Base Database. CAD Computer Aided Design is also installed.! PAGE 12

13 The Ubuntu Software Center is the best way to search, download, and install free and /or low priced apps that run on Ubuntu Linux. Your installed apps are also organized with this tool.! PAGE 13
