Familiar, but better than ever (Interface) Demonstrate, review, and practice how to access the Start menu and apps, how to customize the Start menu by pinning programs and apps to the taskbar and favorites window, and how to search for content. Script One of my favorite things about Windows 10 is that it feels like the platform I've been using for years, but it has all the advanced features I've come to expect from a modern interface. If you've been using Windows 7, you'll feel comfortable with Windows 10 right away. The Windows 10 Start Menu is in the lower left corner. When I press or click the Windows icon, the Start Menu opens. I can resize the Start menu to fill the entire screen, which is really useful on touch devices or for visual learners who like the large, icon-based tiles. I'll do that in a moment. On the left side of the Start Menu, I have my profile information and quick shortcuts to important areas I visit often: File Explorer to find my files saved either locally to this device or to my OneDrive, Documents to view just the files saved on this device, and Settings to access the control panel and settings for this device. On screen Speaker

Underneath, I have a list of my most used applications. If I want to see a list of all the applications installed on this device, I touch or click All Apps. The All Apps list is organized alphabetically by application title. I can swipe or scroll through this list to browse my apps all at once. If my students and I are going to be using the Reading List app often, I'm going to want it pinned that app to my Favorites window. The reading list app helps me keep track of websites I'd like to come back to read another time. Speaker I'll scroll down in the All Apps list to Reading List. I can press and hold on the app title in the list, or right click on it.

Then I'll choose to pin Reading List to Start. Notice that a new tile for the Reading List app appears in my Favorites window. I'll also add another app that I use often: OneNote. I'll search for OneNote in the search window just to the right of the Windows icon that launches the Start menu. To search, I'll touch or click the search field and type "onenote." OneNote appears as one of the available applications installed on this device.

I'll use the same process to pin this application to my Favorites window. I'll go one step farther this time, and also pin OneNote to my taskbar. I'll do this following the same process: I right click or press and hold on OneNote in the search return list, then choose pin to taskbar. This keeps OneNote handy in my taskbar without having to open the Start menu when I want to access it. Once I've pinned apps I used frequently to my Favorites window, I can organize them into groups. It's very easy to click or press and drag tiles to new places. In fact, I'm going to expand the Favorites window so it fills my screen by clicking on the expand arrow in the top right corner of the start menu.

Now that it fills the page, I have a large space to work with rearranging my tiles. I'll move Reading List to a different group by clicking and dragging it to a new location. I can even create new groups by dragging until I get a horizontal transparent bar, designating a new group starting here. Next I will use my mouse to click on the title field and type to replace the title with "Favorite apps." Then I'll press enter to save my changes. Some of my tiles are live tiles, which present me with current information when I launch the Start Menu. If I'd like to see more information from these tiles, I can resize them.

To resize a tile with my mouse, I right-click on the tile and choose resize. To resize on a touch device, I press and hold on the tile until I see the customization tools appear. Then I click on the ellipsis to open a menu of options. I'll resize the weather app so I can see current weather for my location. I'm going to use the collapse arrow in the top right corner of the screen to shrink this Favorites window back to its original size, which allows me to still see some of the desktop. Now my Start Menu is ready and accessible from any Windows 10 device I use with my account! Let s practice by personalizing your desktop. First, search for the Get Started app and pin it to your Favorites window. Use this app anytime you need help using your Windows 10 device. Speaker

Settings Settings Learn to personalize and customize a Windows 10 device and access settings within apps. Script Part of the fun of a Windows 10 device is making it my own. Personalization is easy, and the power to connect to projectors, share content, and customize features is just a click away. On screen Speaker Many of the settings for Windows 10 can be accessed quickly through the notifications area. On a touch device, swipe in from the right side of the screen to open the notifications area. When using a mouse, I can also click on the notifications icon in my system tray. The notifications area contains important information like reminders, incoming messages, and application updates. At the bottom of the notification area, I have one-touch buttons to enable and disable a variety of features. I also have a tile for Settings.

This Settings window is organized in categories for ease of use. You can also use the search feature to locate a particular setting quickly if you don't know which category to open first. Let's check out the personalization menu. It's here that I can change my wallpaper, lock screen, colors, and themes that will follow me from one Windows 10 device to another when I use the same account. I can always get to these same Settings through the Start Menu, or in the apps list, or by searching for settings. If I want to come back to a particular Settings page quickly, I can pin a page to my Start menu by clicking on the pushpin icon near the search field.

Now this Settings page is easily accessible right from the Start menu. It's simple to interact with other devices using Windows 10. I can share content to other apps, connect external devices, and even stream Xbox games straight to my device. Speaker The Settings menu contains lots of options for connecting to bluetooth devices, printers, and more. To connect to an external device like a wireless display adapter, I'll swipe in from the right to access the notifications area, then choose media connect. Then I'm free to walk around my classroom with my tablet, and hand my device to a student to demonstrate how she solved a math problem, instead of being tethered to the media cart in the front of my classroom.

Connect to a wireless display device by selecting it from the list provided. When using a Windows 10 device, I can customize my device and easily connect to peripheral devices. Everything works together seamlessly, which allows me to be more productive with my students. Speaker Spend the next a couple of minutes personalizing your device. Change the background color, theme, or choose a favorite picture. When you are finished, go back to settings and explore Ease of Access. In our Today s Meet, post one way an Ease of Access tool can help students with a disability use better utilized their computer.

Microsoft Edge Microsoft Edge Learn, experience, and practice searching from the address bar, writing on the web, reading view and Hub in the new Edge browser. Script One of the most important computing tools for students and teachers alike is a web browser that is fast and elegant. Built into Windows 10 is a completely redesigned browser, Microsoft Edge. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to write on any web page, use the Reading View for a distraction free experience, and customize settings to fit your privacy and viewing needs. On screen Speaker Let's open up Microsoft Edge so I can show you what I mean. In the task bar, I am going to click on the blue icon with an image of a globe to get started. The first thing you'll notice is the minimalist design that provides for a rich, immersive browsing experience. When I hover over the grey bar at the top, you can see that the address and search boxes have been merged. Hover over the bar Type in the solar system or whatever comes to mind

You can type a web address or search for something of interest, all from the same place. Located in the right-hand corner of the window are two icons, a book and a star. The star is for adding a page to your favorite bookmarks or saving to a reading list that you can return to when you have more time. The book is a tool that removes advertisements and other distracting elements, leaving just the text. This helps students focus on the content of an article. For example, let's say I gave my students an assignment to read an article on Bing News. Opening it up in Reading View brings the text to the forefront and removes the top, bottom and sidebar elements. Adding even more functionality to this reading experience is the new Write on the Web tool. Clicking on the square with a pencil opens a purple menu bar

at the top with useful annotation tools. From here you have several options for annotating directly on the web page. You can change the color of the pen and write overtop of the web page, highlight key words, add text if you do not have a touch-enabled computer, and even take a screen clipping of your favorite part of a web page. Demo the different tools on the web page Once you've made your annotation, you'll want to save it to a folder in your favorites list or share it to an OneNote Research Notebook using the disk and share sharing icons. Speaking of favorites, Microsoft Edge also gives you an easy "one stop shop", called Hub, where you can find Favorites, Reading List, Browsing History and Downloads. You can access these by clicking on the icon that shows a stack of three lines. Lastly, clicking on the three dots at the far right gives you access to your browser settings, where you can do things like change the default Reading View to make it easier to see, block

annoying popups and protect your computer from malicious sites. Spend the next 5 minutes practicing. Go to Tween Tribune, find an article of interest, and click on the Write on the Web tool. Once you have made your annotations, save it either to an OneNote notebook or your reading list. On Today s Meet, post one way this could be useful when working with students.

Multiple Modalities Group discussion Discuss the multiple modalities for differentiated learning - spend some time showing the different ways students can use the computer (digital ink, touch, keyboard, on-screen keyboard with ink-to-text, and Speech Recognition) Multiple modalities for differentiated learning are not just important, but absolutely necessary to meet the needs of today's students. So far today we have used typing, touch and inking for input. Turn and talk: What are the implications for using multiple modalities when working in Windows 10? Be prepared to share when you feel students might benefit from: Touch Onscreen Typing Inking Keyboard and Mouse [Remember to include: Implications for accessibility needs, ELL, ADHD, creatives, etc. ]

Universal Apps Universal Apps Take the new unified look and feel of Windows 10 apps, such as Maps, Photos, OneNote and apps from the Windows Store for a drive and get comfortable using some of the many universal apps. Script On screen Windows 10 comes with a suite of built-in apps that work consistently across your Windows 10 devices. Also known as Universal Apps, this family of apps shares a similar look and feel. You get an experience that s instantly recognizable with less for you to learn. Let me give you a quick preview. To launch my built-in apps, I go to the Start Screen where I have pinned my apps. Camera on speaker Show a famous location: Pyramids in Egypt Let's start with Maps. Your students can go on virtual field trips anywhere in the world, all in breathtaking hifidelity aerial and street views. Let's go see the Pyramids of Egypt. For an even more immersive experience, click to enter 3D View.

Next let's take a look at the Photos app. You can take shots with your phone, upload them to OneDrive for Business, and they'll be available in high resolution and automatically enhanced in the Photos app on any device logged in using the same account. Demo of photos app For teachers and students traveling to interesting places, or taking photos to demonstrate understanding of a particular concept, this is a great way to quickly assemble a slide show ready to present in class. The new Windows 10 Store is a great place to find your favorite digital content, including new discoveries. To access the Windows Store, click on the icon in located in the task pane here. This is your one-stop shop for all free and paid apps there are thousands of great educational apps available. Launch the Windows App store and type in "Education" to filter. Do not filter beyond that Search for Microsoft Office in the Windows Store This is also where you can download the Office Universal apps. Office for Windows 10 offers touch-optimized versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint,

and Outlook that work great on small screen devices like your phone and tablet all the way up to the Microsoft Surface Hub. Students who are not using devices with a keyboard can still easily create and edit their Office files. These new Office apps will be preinstalled for free on phones and small tablets running Windows 10, and available to download from the Windows Store for other devices. Capturing inspiration in the moment is now faster than ever. OneNote is the fastest digital notebook for writing down thoughts and ideas on Windows devices. Within OneNote, you can enter your notes by typing, through audio or video recordings, or by simply drawing with your digital pen right on the touchscreen. Launch OneNote Under the Insert tab point to video and audio recordings, and then click on the Draw tab to show how to add digital ink Show student inking examples This is valuable for creating mind maps or visual displays that are difficult to capture through using just the keyboard.

If you don't already have OneNote, you can download it for free in the Windows store or at OneNote.com. Let's take a look at how to share content and change settings within universal apps. The weather app is one useful universal app for math and science classes. I've already pinned a famous city to my Start menu. I can access the settings for these universal apps by clicking on the menu icon in the upper left-hand corner of the app window. The features available in the app are listed here, including the settings section noted by the gear icon at the bottom of the pane.

Other apps have a standard set of features available in the menu for searching, sharing, and more. Let's go back to the menu icon in the top left corner of the app. This is where I can open commands specific to this application.

I can access a search feature within the app, or share content from this app to another. You might be familiar with this feature on your smart phone. The share menu allows me to send the content I'm viewing to OneNote, my reading list, or social media. This works with my photo gallery app too, of course! Universal apps on Windows 10 deliver a touch and mobile-first experience across devices. This means that even if a teacher is using a fully functioning PC, and students are using tablets, the app experience will be virtually the same. Learning isn't impeded because of the technology, rather the technology becomes an increasingly effective way to personalize learning because of the ever growing access to quality online resources from the Windows store and Windows 10 built-in apps. Spend the next 5 minutes looking through the Windows Store.

Add any titles to your OneNote page titled Universal Apps that you think would be great to use with your students. Have participant s share one or two apps they found that would be great to use with students.

Multi-doing Multi-doing Firsthand experience with utilizing the quadrants using multiple apps Script Windows 10 allows us to use software, universal apps, and a web browser all side-by-side in a truly immersive experience that runs seamlessly across PCs, tablets and phones. I love that I can open anything on my Windows 10 device and expect the same thing to happen. As a teacher, this simplifies my life and makes new tools more accessible for my students. On screen Speaker I'll start by opening Microsoft Edge, the new web browser in Windows 10, from the icon in my taskbar. I'm going to use a Bing search to find information about the red-eyed tree frog for a unit about the tropical rainforest. When I read the search results, I see that the redeyed tree frog lives in Columbia, South America. I can then open my Maps universal app to look for this location in the world. I'll just type Maps in the search field and touch the Maps app to open it. Notice that the Maps app opens right here in the Windows 10 desktop. I'll search for Columbia, South America. If I resize the app window, the content inside will resize to fit the screen. I can get a smaller window quickly

by clicking on the title bar of the app and dragging straight down with my mouse. In fact, I can view these two windows side-by-side using a snap feature. If I click on the title bar of the Maps app and drag it to either side of the desktop, the app will snap to fill that side of the screen. Then a preview of the other open windows opens on the left side of the screen, and I can choose which app I wish to fit on the left. I'll choose to keep Microsoft Edge on the left for now. If I decide that I'd like to search for any recent news articles about tree frogs, I'll open the News app by pressing the tile in my Start screen. I will click on the title bar for the News app and drag it to the top left corner of my screen. This resizes the app into a quadrant and presents me with thumbnails to fill the space again. In this way, I can divide my screen for the best productivity when comparing multiple sources of information.

To open a program or app that isn't currently on my screen, I can search for it, open the Start Menu, or launch it from my taskbar. I'll open the OneNote app by clicking on the icon I've previously pinned to my task bar. While this opens in full screen, I can quickly drag the title bar to the bottom right corner to fit it on my desktop. You'll see that this fills in the last quadrant on my desktop. If you've used Windows before, you'll recognize the simple tools to minimize, resize, and close apps in the top right corner of each window. Just touch or click the X icon to close an app when you wish to exit. Windows 10 gives you absolutely the best experience for doing what you do. Stay focused with easy ways to snap apps in place and organize your screens for getting things done. The flexibility this provides to me and my students empowers us to do more with the technology available to us! Speaker Post on the Today s Meet one example of how student s may use this feature to work more efficiently.

Cortana Cortana See and experiment with how to use Cortana, your personal, digital assistant, who is ready and waiting to help you with a variety of tasks, find you information, and keep you organized. Script As teachers, we are busy. Lesson plans, grading, parent nights, data analysis, special programs - all while balancing our passion for teaching and learning with our personal lives. Wouldn't it be great if you had a personal assistant? Now you do. In Windows 10, your personalized, digital assistant, Cortana, is ready and waiting to help with tasks, reminders, searches, and more, as she integrates with your profile and other applications on any Windows 10 device: including PCs, tablets, and phones. On screen Speaker To get started, you can start by simply saying two key words that prompt her to start listening: "Hey, Cortana."

Cortana keeps her own digital notebook to organize the way she learns how to help you. This notebook includes helpful information like commute times, news, and reminders. Since Cortana's notebook is tied to the user, it follows you anywhere. But because it runs on the device, many of these features don't require an internet connection. Cortana keeps track of places that are important to me, as I tell her to remember them. This helps remind me to leave for home a few minutes early if traffic is bad! If you're not sure how to get started using Cortana, she'll let you know how she can help. I can also launch Cortana with text input, by clicking on the search field right next to the start menu. That way, if I'm in a team meeting, I can still access my assistant without making a sound.

I'll start using Cortana by asking her to add a meeting to my calendar for a parent meeting I have tomorrow. Speaker Hey Cortana. Add a meeting to my calendar for tomorrow at 3 PM. Cortana: Meeting with Justin's parents? Yes.

Now my meeting is set in Cortana, and I'll get a reminder about my meeting from any Windows 10 device I'm on. I can check the events on my calendar by pressing the calendar icon in the notebook. I can also ask Cortana to do this for me: Hey Cortana, what's on my calendar for tomorrow? If we're taking a class trip outside this week, I'm going to use Cortana to check the forecast and let me know if I need to have the students bring jackets or umbrellas. Speaker Hey Cortana, what's the weather forecast? Looks like it's going to be a great day! These voice-initiated features are perfect for teachers and students with accessibility needs. Speaker

One of the most helpful things Cortana can do for me is to remind me to do something, at a certain time or place. Speaker Hey Cortana, remind me to Kristen about our project when I get to work. Yes. I can also use Cortana to help me find things: information, facts, settings, and files. Cortana uses Bing's powerful search engine to bring me content. I can search the Internet right from this search field, using voice or text input. Speaker If I'm sitting in a training workshop, I'll want to use typing to search for related content. I'm going to click on the search field, and then type in "problem based learning." Since Cortana can search my files or on the web, I'll make sure to select Web.

Cortana launches my web browser and presents me with search results for my topic. Better yet, Cortana can give me information using Bing search results from within her own notebook. If I'm looking for a definition or a fact, Cortana can help! Speaker Think about a student who would like to know a little more about a word he heard in class today, but he doesn't know how to spell it. Hey Cortana, define the word "bundle." Now the student has the word's correct spelling and the definition, without knowing how to spell it. I can also check facts I'd like to know for a class project. Hey Cortana, how tall is the Empire State Building? The last thing I'd like to show you is the one I use the most. Cortana can dig into files and settings on my device or in my OneDrive to find what I'm looking for. Speaker

No more clicking through folders to find my project rubric the night before we start a new unit! For this one, I'll use my typing input and type "project rubric" into the search field. This time, I'll leave the search parameter set to "My stuff." This search return finds my project rubric, which is stored in my OneDrive and syncing to this device for me to access offline if needed. I can use this same feature to find apps or software loaded on my device. If I'm setting a timer for my student's quiz, I can open the alarm app and use the timer option. As a part of any Windows 10 device, Cortana's features are accessible by voice or by type input, giving me the most flexibility for any situation. Cortana is a truly personal digital assistant - learning what I care about and what I need, and presenting me with real time information when I ask for it. Speaker

Now it s your turn. Spread out around the room. Some of you may want to go out into the hallway. For additional help, use the Get Started app and (1) click on the Cortana icon and (2) click on Make Cortana yours After about 10 minutes, take a break. We will meet back in the room in 20 minutes.

Sharing Sharing Learn how to use the new sharing menu built in to Windows 10 File Explorer, installing OneDrive for Business from Office 365 and opening and saving items from OneDrive for Business in Office. Script Collaboration is an important element of any learning community. Whether it's a veteran teacher sharing a folder of resources with a brand new colleague, a group of students working together on a presentation, or a team of teachers collaborating in OneNote, Windows 10 makes sharing files a breeze. On screen Speaker For those making the transition from Windows 7, you'll find the familiar File Explorer in two places: as text in the upper left of the Start Menu or as a yellow folders icon located on the lower left of the Task Bar.

You can share directly from File Explorer by selecting a folder or file and opening the Share menu. From here, you have the option to Zip multiple files together into a folder, a file, or use the new Share button to share via other apps that you've designated in your Windows 10 settings. To take full advantage of sharing in Windows 10, install the OneDrive for Business sync client from your school district's Office 365 settings page. First, log onto Office 365. Click on the gear icon, and select Office 365 Settings, then Software. Choose OneDrive and click Install. To sync your school OneDrive library to your computer, click on the Apps Launcher in the upper left hand corner, and then click the OneDrive tile.

Select the Sync tab at the top of your Documents list. Click "Sync Now". Now when students are working together on that group presentation, they are able to open and save to the cloud right from PowerPoint in the latest version of Office.

You can also share directly within an Office program. In your OneDrive for Business, click on the the ellipses to the right of your file you just created, and choose share. Windows 10 gives you the freedom to work offline or in the cloud when you want to share and collaborate with others. Practice sharing to your OneDrive account. Open a Word document, click on File > Save As. Look for the OneDrive-Personal icon and save your document there. Launch Edge, and log into your OneDrive account. You should see the document you just saved. Now you can share that document with anyone

else because is lives in the cloud, and not on your computer.

Multiple Desktops Multiple Desktops Using the new Task View in Windows 10 to add multiple desktops for better workspace organization, teachers will watch, practice and then add. Script Anyone who's ever been a classroom teacher knows that there are always multiple items on the to-do list. You might be working on a rubric for a culminating project, an agenda for your next team meeting, or that to a parent you've been meaning to send. Busy teachers needs a platform that enables teachers to work in the most efficient way possible. Windows 10 makes it easier than ever with the new Task View. On screen Speaker To open Task View, click on the icon directly to the right of the search box at the bottom of the screen. It's a white square that animates when you hover over it. In Task View, running applications show as windows in the middle of the screen and you now have the ability to organize them into virtual desktops. To do this, click or press "new desktop" located on the right side of

the desktops area that has appeared above your task bar. You have two options for moving an application to a new desktop. Simply drag the app window on top of the desktop you want, and release it when the window becomes smaller. You can also right click on the app, select "move to" and choose the desktop from the list that appears. Let's take the examples mentioned above and move them to different desktops. Demo creating multiple desktops The first thing I do in the morning is open up Outlook--I'll keep it on Desktop 1 and finish the draft of that to a parent. Next, I'm going to finish the rubric I need for next week when I introduce the final project to my class-- all of my lesson planning and curriculum work I'll keep on Desktop 2. Finally, my team is meeting tomorrow morning and I need to update the Agenda in our OneNote notebook. I'm going to keep all work related to my team on Desktop 3. With Task View and Desktops, Windows 10 makes it easy to organize your virtual space and be more productive. Spend the next 5 minutes either planning out your desktops in your OneNote notebook, or

jump right in and start creating your multiple desktops!
