2 Microsoft DreamSpark DreamSpark is a Microsoft educational software repository that is made available to our students through Microsoft IT Academy partnership. The repository features latest development tools, such as, Microsoft Visual Studio and many others. It also provides latest Windows operating systems including Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows Server. The account we provide to students is active for the duration of one year from the time it is created. This doesn't affect the license you obtain when you download software. General Rules 1. We provide access to DreamSpark using your HCC student account. For detail, talk to your instructor. And, you only need one account. 2. When an account is created for you, DreamSpark will send you a registration to setup your password and grant you access to the software repository. 3. All software hosted on DreamSpark are made available to students free of charge. 4. You may be limited to a single download of particular software, so make sure you keep a backup copy. 5. If you have any technical problem in regards to DreamSpark or the software you download, please consult with your instructor.

3 Downloading Microsoft Visual Studio 1) Use the link below to open DreamSpark site and Login by click the Sign In link. 2) Enter your username and password to Sign in or Register to create one. When asked for an address, use your HCC .

4 3) We will be using Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2015 in this class (though you are free to download any of the other versions of Visual Studio). In the Product Search box, enter: Visual Studio Community 2015 and press Enter. 5) Click Express Checkout and in the window that pops up, click Express Checkout again. 6) Click Download Your Software. If necessary, click Download again. If asked, Save the file on your PC. It will create a file in Downloads that starts with: vs2015.com_enu otherwise the file will automatically be saved in the Downloads folder.

5 7) Go to your Downloads folder to locate the file vs2015.com_enu.iso: 8) After finishing the download, check the format of the downloaded file; it could be ISO or IMG format. If the file extension is.iso, it is an ISO or if it is.img, it is IMG. Installing Microsoft Visual Studio 1) If you have a DVD Writer, you may burn the file into a DVD. 2) An easier solution, however, is to use 7-zip, a freeware tool that you can use to zip or unzip files. Download and install this tool by going to or to zip.org/download.html and download the.exe file for 32-bit or 64-bit.

6 3) This will create a 7zXXXX.exe file where XXXX may vary depending on current update (mine was 7z1602.exe). The file will be in the Downloads folder. Double click this file to install it. 4) After installing 7-Zip, start the tool (7-Zip File Manager). Double click Computer, then work your way to the Downloads folder (Computer/C:/Users/yourname/Downloads), or to wherever the Visual Studio ISO file was downloaded (step 7/8 above). 5) You should see the vs2015.com_enu.iso file in the 7-zip window. Select/highlight the file vs2015.com_enu.iso, click the Extract button from the toolbar, and click OK. 6) A folder in the Downloads area will be created: vs2015.com_enu. Double-click the folder to open it. 7) Once in the folder, double-click vs_community.exe to run the file.

7 8) The window shown below will display. Select Custom and click Next.

8 9) This step is very important. The following window will appear. Make sure and select Programming Languages so that C++ will install, and then click Next.

9 10) In the next window, click Install. 11) If the following window appears, select Yes.

10 12) The final window will display. Click Launch OR simply click the Start button on your taskbar, and select: Visual Studio ) When Visual Studio is started the first time the following window will display. a b c You may Sign In if you already have an account OR you may Sign up to create an account OR you may simply click: Now now, maybe later

11 14) The final step is to configure your display (Note: you can always readjust these settings later). a b c d You can set the Development Settings to Visual C++ or YOU MAY LEAVE IT AS GENERAL (and if you do that, you will have access to C# and other languages). Set the color theme: Blue will display a white background with black lettering in the coding window, while Dark will display a black background with white lettering. Click Start Visual Studio Continue to the (02CH2) Using C++ link located in our course, for information on how to use Visual Studio once you have completed this setup.
