2 AN307 Installing the Vocality Network Upgrade Tool (VNUT) 1 Overview Units are supplied from the factory with the latest release of operating software. As time goes by you may find that you need to load a different version to upgrade the units. The Vocality Network Upgrade Tool (VNUT) is a TFTP server that is quick and simple to install. It allows all current Vocality devices to be upgraded via TFTP. 2 Pre-requisites Windows TM 95/98/2000/XP/Vista/7 PC VNUT installation code 3 Installation Note: Be aware that firewalls in place on your PC could prevent VNUT from operating correctly. Check your settings to ensure that firewalls will not prohibit the operation of VNUT. You will find the application VNUT.msi on the software distribution disk or you can download it from the Vocality website at To install, open the folder containing the file and double-click on the application name. 3 When you choose Next you will see, the licence agreement. On agreeing to the licence terms you will see: Figure 2 Select VNUT installation folder The window prompts you to enter the path for the installation of the TFTP program. If you want to install the program anywhere other than the default path, then change the path in the white box beside the word Folder:. Otherwise, choose Next. The following page will appear: Figure 3 Confirm VNUT installation If you wish to cancel the installation, choose Cancel. If you want to change the location the TFTP software will be installed in, choose Previous and the page shown in Figure 2 will be displayed again. Otherwise choose Next. Page 2 of 10

4 Figure 4 Installing VNUT The screenshot above shows installation in progress. Here the installation is over 50% complete. When your installation is complete the following page will be displayed: 4 Vocality Operating System software Figure 5 VNUT installation complete You will need to copy the new Vocality Operating System (VOS) software to the appropriate folder. In this example, the software is assumed to be copied to C:\TFTPBoot. You will need to add a new folder to your C: drive, using Windows Explorer, and rename it TFTPBoot. Then copy the software upgrade into the folder called TFTPBoot. 5 Running VNUT When you installed VNUT an icon like this should have appeared on the desktop. When you double click this icon it will start VNUT. If you cannot find the icon then open Windows Explorer, and go to the directory where the VNUT application was installed (default is C:\Program Files\VNUT) and double click on the file named 'VocalityNetworkUpgradeTool.exe'. On starting up, the VNUT TFTP Server finds out the IP address of your PC and asks you to select one to use. If you want the displayed address then choose OK. Page 3 of 10

5 Figure 6 VNUT choice of IP address Note: VNUT will display the first IP address presented to it by the Windows operating system. If you have both a wireless LAN and a wired LAN connection, Windows will always present the IP address for the wireless LAN, which is not normally what you want. In this case type over the displayed address with the correct address for the wired LAN connection before choosing OK. If the IP address is correct then you will see the message 'Create Socket OK' on the following page. Figure 7 VNUT reporting valid IP address Page 4 of 10

6 6 Specifying the upgrade directory To select the directory where the Vocality Operating System is stored, you will need to choose Options. The following page is displayed: When you select Directory. The following menu will be displayed: Figure 8 Select VNUT Options > Directory Page 5 of 10

7 7 Settings Select the 'C:\TFTPBOOT', as shown above, and choose OK. Figure 9 Browse for TFTP folder location CAUTION: For security reasons, you are advised to store the upgrade software in C:\TFTPBOOT. Vocality advises against ever using the root directory (C:\) for storing the upgrade software. To adjust the settings, you will need to choose Options > Settings as follows: Page 6 of 10

9 8 Security settings Figure 11 VNUT Options > Settings menu The VNUT TFTP Server software has security settings, which allow you to limit access to the TFTP Server (PC) to TFTP clients (such as Vocality units) with an IP address within a specified range or to specific IP addresses in a list. If security settings are not used, then any TFTP client (such as a Multiplexer or a PC) could put files onto or copy files from the TFTP Server. Note: When VNUT is first installed, the security settings are blank, which will prevent any client from connecting to the server. You must enter at least one option before using VNUT for the first time. To access the security menu, choose Options > Security. Page 8 of 10
