1 1/9 Installing USB Drivers to Windows System Noptel Oy, Oulu Finland Noptel s USB devices uses USB/Serial Converters made by FTDI Ltd. The drivers for the USB Converter are provided by FTDI ( The drivers have to be installed to the system before the device(s) can be used. If needed, Noptel specific drivers can be downloaded from Noptel s site: ( Normally, the drivers are installed automatically by Windows Update mechanism using an Internet connection. In some cases, especially with some older Noptel devices, the drivers cannot be found by Windows Update system. In that case the installation can be done as follows. First, copy the drivers to the Desktop. (Some of Noptel s devices are introduced in specific noptelbus and noptelport files. Other files includes the standard driver copied from FTDI.) Then, plug device to the USB port. Windows Vista: After a while the following Found New Hardware dialog view should appear: Select and press: Locate and install driver software button and continue from page 3.

2 The case with Windows 7 and an older Noptel device is a little bit different. 2/9 First it seems that the installation starts ok. But after a short while the installation ends up to failure. After that a Device Manager (Control Panel) view is displayed with Other devices and with no driver for the device. Notice the exclamation mark in front of the name. This means that the device has been detected by the operating system, but there was no device driver available for the device. Press the right mouse button to open additional pop-up menu for the unknown device. Select Update Driver Software to open Update Driver Software view. Continue from next page on.

3 If the installation is done stand-alone and Internet connection is not available, you may see a Insert the disc that came with your view. 3/9 If needed, press I don t have the disc. Show me other options. Press Browse my computer for driver software to continue. Press Browse and locate the folder of the drivers on the Desktop of your computer. Press OK when you are ready.

4 4/9 Press Next to begin installing driver software. If you see a Windows Security warning (probable with some Noptel devices): Press Install this driver software anyway to continue.

5 Finally, you should see The software for this device has been successfully installed. 5/9 The actual USB Serial Converter driver is now installed. Press Close button to continue. Then, you ll might see the Insert the disc that came with your dialog view or the Device Manager again: This means, that another installation round is needed for virtual USB Serial Port or Noptel USB Serial Port. First round was for bus (USB-Converter). Just go back to page 3 again and continue the same way you did before. In case of Windows 7 and with an older Noptel device: Go back to page 2.

6 Finally, you should see The software for this device has been successfully installed for the USB serial port also. Please note, that the COM port number is now visible at the title bar. 6/9 Press Close and you are ready to run the application software! However, it might be a good idea to restart the computer first. Advanced Find and press Control Panel botton in the main menu:

7 First select Hardware and Sound to view (and update) device drivers and after that select Device Manager to view hardware and devices. 7/9 Now you should see both (Noptel) USB Serial Converter and (Noptel) USB Serial Port (COM..) in Device Manager as follows: Serial Converter Serial Port

8 Press the right mouse button to open additional menu for (Noptel) USB Serial Port (COM..). 8/9 Select Properties from the menu to view more detailed information and additional setup options of the driver. Select Port Settings control tab and press Advanced button to view Advanced Settings for COM port.

9 9/9 With these options you can change the number of the COM port and Receive/Transmit buffer size. In case of transmission problems with the device, press Latency Timer (msec) button and reduce the default value of 16 millisecods to a smaller value. Please do not change the options if there isn t problems in your system. Press Ok to return to USB Serial Port (COM..) Properties and select Driver control tab. Some additional notes: If the driver has to be updated press Update Driver If there are problems with updating the drivers an Uninstall procedure might be needed to remove both old drivers by force and restart the system. Uninstallation is possible when the device is connected only.
