Used by itself, IICE reduces development and maintenance expenses by providing an abstraction layer to hide the complexities of each different repository. Alternatively, IICE can be used in combination with IBM FileNet Content Federation Services (CFS for IICE), so that IICE provides CFS for IICE with federated access to non-p8 content repositories. CFS for IICE creates a standardized master catalog containing metadata from the non-p8 content repositories. This metadata appears as native content to P8 applications, thereby supporting pre-existing FileNet P8 applications such as P8 Records Manager and P8 Business Process Manager as well as partner or customer-built applications written against the P8 API's. 2 Description Content integration is about increasing flexibility and control while decreasing costs and risks. When used by itself, IICE is best suited for customers who need to build content-centric applications leveraging a repository independent layer for quick and easy access to disparate repositories. When used with CFS, IICE is best suited for customers who want to standardize on P8 by federating metadata from disparate repositories into P8's master catalog. The reach of P8 applications is then expanded to include all repositories throughout the enterprise. Today's organizations have invested heavily in repositories for managing unstructured information such as documents, images, reports, rich media, Web content, and . But the reality is that these systems have been purchased and deployed departmentally or inherited through mergers and acquisitions. This means that much of a company's business-critical information is scattered across the enterprise and trapped in isolated silos, which can lead to poor customer service, inefficient business processes, duplications of effort, and noncompliance with recordkeeping policies. IICE delivers federated access to information stored in disparate content management systems from IBM and other vendors such as EMC/Documentum and Open Text, from within portals, workflow, and other enterprise applications. WebSphere IICE makes multiple disparate repositories look and act as a single unified repository, and delivers complete platform for deploying applications and workflows spanning multiple content sources. 3 IBM Web site IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single proof of entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license. Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made. Product positioning Customers faced with content silos in multiple repositories can take any or all of three approaches: Use IICE (to provide what may be called a "content integration" solution), where all repositories can be accessed, resulting in bidirectional, real-time access to the content in each repository. Use IICE with CFS for IICE (to provide what may be called a "content federation" solution) to create a master catalog in P8, so that P8 applications such as records management and business process management can access the metadata from third-party repositories from within P8 as if it were native P8 content. Choose a consolidation strategy in cases where their requirements are best met by migrating the content of select repositories into either P8 or CM8. Having the option to use a content integration or a content federation strategy as a temporary or permanent option, customers retain full control to decide if and when they will expose themselves to the risk and expense associated with content migrations. Statement of direction Future plans for IICE include maintaining currency for the connectors to the industry leading repositories, and to enhance support for integration into SOA environments. These features are planned for inclusion in future releases. 5 Specified operating environment Hardware requirements: The exact hardware configuration to support a specific environment with satisfactory performance varies depending on the distribution of the software components, the number of documents to be accessed, the types of systems being accessed, the application requirements, server workload, the number of users, and other factors. The minimum hardware requirements for WebSphere Information Integrator Content Edition are defined by the supported operating system. Refer to the Software requirements section for supported operating systems, with the following additional minimum hardware requirements: When running on Windows or Linux in a 32-bit Intel environment; an Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon CPU is required. When running in a Solaris environment, an UltraSparc CPU is required. Memory requirement: The following table shows the minimum recommended memory for installation in megabytes (MB). The actual requirement depends on the applications the customer intends to run. Additional memory may be required to handle heavy workloads and large numbers of users. The numbers below are for reference only. Graphical tools that are part of the administration tool will require an additional 128 MB. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select Programs, there are other designated measurements such as users, client devices, and messages. The number of Value Unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a Value Unit table. You must obtain a PoE for the calculated number of Value Unit entitlements for your implementation. The Value Unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor.
